  1. I restrung the Squier P bass last night. I replaced the Fender flats with some Ernie Ball Super Slinky rounds. There is a change in tension, not huge but noticeable. I've always used D'Addario in the past, but I really like these EBs. For rounds you don't seem to get a lot of finger noise and they feel quite smooth for. For what I'm doing now, I think I'll stick with rounds.
  2. I agree that Fender flats are very high tension. I'm thinking of switching to a set of rounds or some Harley Benton flats on my P bass. I've struggled over the past few months with it and I'm beginning to think the Fender flats maybe part of the issue.
  3. I've always liked the tone of the bass player in Blind Melon on the album of the same name. I assume it's a Jazz bass because there's a lot of photos with him playing one. It cuts through but also sits well with the other guitars Someone will tell me now that it wasn't a Jazz bass.
  4. Is that a personal account in one person's name?
  5. I'm sure this has been covered many times but I can't find a relevant thread. I've never had anything to do with payment side regarding gigs, the band leader has always sorted it. In a new band and there isn't a band leader as such so we're a bit in the dark on some things. We've got a gig coming up where the pub pays by bank transfer (on the day). This seems to be the way a lot of pubs etc are going. If it's a regular payment method for the places we're going to be playing, what's a good way of organising it for a band? To be honest I wouldn't want regular transfers going into my account and the 3 transfers going out... Cheers
  6. Unfortunately yes, as this made it all the more frustrating
  7. Can't blame the singer 🙂... and the mixer was a freebie from a mate of the guitarists. Vocal, guitar, bass and electric drums all through the mixer. We also recorded the rehearsal through the desk. Drums and guitar were clipping almost all the time. The FOH sound was showing the bass drum distorting all the time. I wasn't clipping, but was really low in the mix and farting periodically. This all showed up in the recording with the added bonus that one channel was louder than the other. We had problems first off with only one channel actually working, thought we'd resolved it but the recording said otherwise. Hey ho.
  8. A very long day. Had a full rehearsal, setting up the whole PA, monitors etc. We seem to have a serious problem with the mixer...and a gig on Friday. Otherwise it was a fun day.
  9. Had a very productive practice. We went over 4 songs that we weren't happy with and sorted them out. Then we played through the whole set as a rehearsal not a practice and it all came together.
  10. Have replaced the pick ups? A Squier p bass I had had a dreadful buzz. I shielded it, changed the pots and wiring. No change. Changed the pick ups eliminated 99% of the hum/buzz.
  11. I've only ever had D'Addario Chromes or Fender flats. Neither, thankfully, have felt sticky, just smooth 😎
  12. I've recently put rounds back on my Jazz bass. I had a set of Chromes on it for about 7 years. They worked fine in a blues based band I was in back when I put them on. The Chromes made for a nice woody tone, but for my current band I need a bit more bite.
  13. I wholeheartedly agree. There's nothing about AI that interests me in the slightest, especially regarding art. It's a complete oxymoron.
  14. I've never had anyone question me playing a Jazz bass. It'd be tough if they did because I'll play what I feel comfortable playing. I can get a tone that works but also, as I get older my hands don't stretch as much as they used to. One finger per fret is very difficult and I find the extra nut width on a Precision harder work. As others have said, you have to tweak a Jazz more, but that also gives more options, especially with the bridge pick up. As for live sound, that's a real bug bear. Not so much for me, but as an audience member. Sound engineers seem to think the optimal mix is to sound like a car fitted with a huge sub in the boot, with windows wound up, parked 100m away.
  15. https://youtube.com/watch?v=tdtUttJSFYY&si=Xhmm1RNUVgveLgJc I'm not sure why this hasn't embedded, anyway Róisín Murphy-Unputdownable
  16. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y5qleq4xeo More controversy about ticketing for the Oasis reunion. The treatment of fans seems shabby at best.
  17. I've been listening to the whole album really. I never got into Tool until a few weeks ago.
  18. I don't think I've met a more cowardly collective than people in bands. I've had this sort of thing happen to me once or twice. The first time I was told the project was folding because the guitarist had family commitments. A few weeks later their former bass player posted on social media how it was great to be back playing with the lads again. I called the guitarist every name under the sun. It's pathetic.
  19. I put my bass on the ironing board and put a cushion under the neck to change strings.
  20. I can only comment on 2 brands as they're the only ones I've ever used. On my Sire V7 I've got D'Addario Chromes and on my Squier P bass Fender flats. Both sets have been on the basses for about 7 years. When I first put the Chromes they sounded significantly brighter than the rounds I had on there, but that was because I hadn't changed those rounds in...I can't even remember. The Chromes are now very 'played in'. They're that played in that the passive tone control on the Sire has little effect, to the point I thought the tone pot was broken. (I put some rounds on temporarily and thankfully found out that it was the strings). The Fender flats on the P bass have maintained a much brighter sound, but this might be because I play the Sire more or that the Squier has always been brighter and actually louder acoustically and plugged in. The Chromes are now at a stage where I'm umming and ahhing whether to replace them. They do have a very acoustic upright sound about them though, so I might keep them on. For the money, the Fender Flats are very good, although they do feel as they have a very hight tension compared to the Chromes.
  21. Got mine today, all looks good and genuine
  22. The first live performance with my new band, we did a half hour set at a 'Party in the Park' event. We couldn't of asked for a better start. Great reception/response from those there, we even have a potential booking. It was great to be playing live again after a gap of 7 years.
  23. When you start you can't stop. If I didn't play gigs, I just wouldn't play. Gigs are the motivation and discipline to play, and the buzz. I've got my first live performances in 7 years in about 2hrs time. I thought about selling everything about 5 years ago, but here I am, back in a band ready to play again.
  24. I ordered some this morning and they're due to be delivered tomorrow, fingers crossed. Hopefully this will turn out better than the last time I bought strings on Amazon... I received a mobile phone case.
  25. I really do like the look and spec to these. I've been browsing the LFSys site today, impressive
