1. Hope Phil likes it - I was waxing lyrical about DJs when he told me he wanted a Jazz. There's none finer at the price IMO.
2. I have an ABM RC 500 EVOII - my ears love it. If you want a hi-fi twangy thang look elsewhere. If you want fat and bassy, they're the way to go IMHO.
3. I'd take a Warwick of some description just to burn and keep warm. Ampwise - definitely a Genz Benz so I could alert passing ships in the night with those silly bright LEDs.
4. A few people showed some interest in coming to this monthly Jam Night in response to my thread whingeing about what a crap bass player I am. If you wanna come along, it's this coming Sunday night (17th) at the Thirsty Scholar on Oxford Road - Manchester. Things seem to get going fairly early so if you wanna get up and play, get there handy. There's a good mix of music - neo soul (?) funk, blues etc
5. A very nice bloke who lives in a very nice part of the world. He sold me a very nice Sandberg and now my Sadowsky is getting dusty. A pleasure to deal with in every respect.
6. I had about a year's worth of lessons off Nick Carey who frequents these very pages and they were invaluable. I used to play and think and play like a guitarist (which I was) and my technique was a pile of bat poo. Nick sorted out my technique and inspired me to practice and get better - which I did. I'm at a stage now where I need a few more lessons to get me over the wall and onto the next level. Lessons open up my mind to ideas and take me down avenues I wouldn't venture if left to my own devices.
7. I'd have this back in a shot if I hadn't just bought a Sandberg. It's a superb bass this and a mega bargain for someone
8. Very powerful, boost only - a little is a lot and the best preamp I've used and I've had a couple of J-Retros, a J-Retro Deluxe and an ACG02 and a Tone Pump. I just use a midge's of bass boost with mine - perfick.
9. Is it yours now Russ?
10. Lovely lovely lovely
11. I took the J Retro out of the one I had because the passive tone was so much better and I wanted more control of that. I always use the same strings as you Dave (Sunbeams).
12. I'll put a post up Steve this weekend - have to find out the date.
13. Kier bought a scratchplate off me - he was a gent and a pleasure to deal with. One day, I'll sell him a whole bass
14. Sean bought my Spector last night - he's a proper bloke and I wish I could have spent more time with him chewing the fat. Hope you enjoy the bass mate, you were a pleasure to do business with.
15. Thanks a lot fellas - great to meet you Sean.
16. I think it's cool if the bassist is responsible for the relicing in the time honoured way - you know....had the bass 25 years etc but buying a reliced bass thinking it'll make you look cool IMO is utterly bogus.
17. Horses for courses innit. I've gigged extensively with an LMII and it did the job right every time. If I had to settle down with one amp and no other, it'd be the LMII regardless of cost. I've always been Ashdown curious and when my soul band fell apart, I joined a blues band so I thought why not and bought an Ashdown ABM RC EVOII 575. I absolutely love the tone I get out of it with my Sadowsky and it's absolutely perfect for blues. The only down side to it is I don't trust it so I've had to buy a second head as a back up (Hartke HA3500) which is a bit of a nuisance but forget all that bloody nonsense about Ashdown being "dull" and "muddy", my bass finally sounds like a bass with the Ashdown and the bottom end of the band is fuller and fatter than it's ever been. It's very punchy too but anyone wanting a hi-fi sound or the "slap tone to die for" that is often quoted better look elsewhere. Like I said, horses for courses.
18. This bass took my breath away when I played it - it is fabulous. Good luck with the sale Russ.
19. I think it has silverfoxnik Sadly, the bass I was hoping to buy has just been sold
20. I love this bass but my shoulder problem persists and since I got my Sadowsky - it's not getting a look in. Very low action with no buzzing (when I play it anyway) - it plays itself. The ACG preamp is a revelation and retains the Spector growl and gives you a lot more besides. It also has the advantage (IMO) of only having a single volume knob + pup pan and once you get used to it, it's amazing what sounds you can get out of it from extreme trebbliness to deep deep bassiness. The B string is thunderous and clear as a bell. The bass is immaculate apart from a slight lacquer crack on the back going from the control cavity to the edge - it hasn't progessed since I bought the bass nearly a year ago. It's also had a brand new bridge from Spector (the B slot on the old one was too narrow for a 130 - so the original will come as a spare. It'll also come with gold Schaller straplocks. You can have it for £675 which is ridiculous for a bass of this quality - I don't want to post it so come and get it / will deliver within a reasonable distance. I have my eye on a bass that's up for sale at the mo but if that goes, trades are possible but please don't take the piss. A nice P or J, maybe a Sandberg or a good lined fretless with + / - cash adjustment might tempt me.
21. We'll miss you Steve Better start thinking about organising a Bash down there so we can all start saving up
22. Can I come too?
23. Has anyone mentioned The Fabulous Thunderbirds? I like Ronnie Earl too and a bit of Rory Gallagher on the side.
