1. The final final gig of my soul band Nice Guy Eddie last night - a wedding in a large room. It was a miracle I even got there with the worst man-flu I've had in years, I felt absolutely sh*te and had a bit of a temperature but as they say - the show must go on. Lots of new gear in use too - Ashdown head / Aguilar 112s (again) and my new Sadowsky. The band loved the sound and I fooking hated it - I had to boost the mids / highs to cut through and then it got quite trebly / scratchy - great for rock / punk but 60's soul? It was very punchy but lacked the definition I'm used to and I'm slowly coming around to the conclusion that I'm a Markbass man. Much as I loved my new Sadowsky, I struggled with 4 strings and the extra string spacing and by the third song wished I'd started with my 5 string Spector. I never realised how much I use the B string until last night and now I don't know whether to persist with the 4 string Sadowsky or try and swap it for a 5 string one. I know I know... I've got a blues dep gig at the Burnley Blues Festival tomorrow - just received the set list Yeh yeh I know it's "only blues" but I have my work cut out trying to remember how each song goes and all I want to do is lie down and watch some crap on the box.
2. Does the head come out of these for use with other cabinets?
3. Traded cabs with Etienne - a lovely bloke, proper bassist and all round good egg. Pleasure to meet you sir
4. Thanks John - I owe ya a bottle of Dog
5. I'm in the market for a back up amp - a couple of questions if you don't mind....what does " a little servicing" mean and will it be loud enough through 2x8ohm Aguilar 112s for small - medium sized gigs?
6. Nice score Pedro
7. I didn't really appreciate Hendrix as much then as I do now - TBH, it wasn't that great and the sound was dreadful. I saw Cream at the Royal Albert Hall reunion a couple of years ago and that was really special - easily in the top 3 gigs of all time for me.
8. All sounds very familiar Pedro - hope it works out for you
9. Sonic blue and lipstick red guitars and basses evoke memories of the 60s for me
10.
Have you ever seen Hendrix or cream live mate?
I've seen both I grew up in Liverpool and from 1959, lived opposite Paul Mc Cartney until he moved away around 1964. I was only young but have some nice memories of the Beatles around that time - playing footy in the street with them, Uncle Jim (Paul's Dad) letting me pluck that bass on the sofa and best of all, sitting in a Ford Thames van with John while he signed copies of Fan Club Magazines. I can remember that as if it was yesterday. My older brother got a guitar for his birthday - I remember it was a white Framus single cutaway and he couldn't tune it so he used to send me around to Terry Silvester's house to get it tuned. Terry was in a band called The Escorts then - he later joined The Swinging Blue Jeans and after that replaced Graham Nash when he left the The Hollies. Terry got fed up of me going 'round so he showed me how to tune it and a few chords. I was about 7 or 8 and got the bug. There were bands everywhere were we lived. Anyway, when I went to secondary school, I met another guitarist called John Lewis and we started playing as a duo - did our first 'gig' at West Derby Conservative Club in 1967. We did a few songs and got a bottle of pop and a packet of crisps. Me and John carried on playing together right through school and drifted apart. Here's a back garden shot of me showing off my brand new AC30 which I bought from Frank Hessy's for £120. The guitar is a Hofner Verithin. Here's me and John - I'm about 16 in this shot..... ..and here we are a couple of years ago. He'd just done a gig at the 606 Club in London with Connie Lush - I sneaked up on him and frightened the life out of him.
11. So pleased for you Dave - have a great time fella
12.
What are you going for now??
Back to Aggies Chris - new band that rehearses in a loft forces reluctant sale. I'll miss this cab - which is now sold.
13. Immaculate condition, wonderful tone, 4 ohms, very light, castors on the back. £400 ono - no trades. Deliver within a reasonable distance / meet halfway or ship at your expense.
14. Yeh - but it must have its ups and downs. Groans and beheads himself..
15. I think she's fabulous and I love her style of playing. I wish I could play like that.
16. It is Paul - I'll PM you with a link to 3 demo songs
17. I've had this dilemma for a long time but I think I've pretty much resolved it with my new Sadowsky PJ - it does both sounds beautifully. But, if I had to decide between a P and a J, it'd be a P for me.
18. I discovered that the string saddles on Spector bridges should be at the same (but opposite) angle as the headstock. Mine weren't so I adjusted 'em. Bloody hell - I can't get over the difference a simple adjustment can make to the tone and sustain. Just thought I'd share that revelation
19. Bonjour monsieur - c'est magnifique I metioned on Talkbass that I wasn't sure whether the minty green pg on mine would stay and some kind chappie did some Photoshopping for me - waddya think? I'm favouring the tort at the mo...
