Herrington doesn't play the recorded solo. Saying that, Becker and Fagen can do what they like with their own songs. I always love to hear that solo, though.
No...that is what I meant by chops..and I doubt Becker and Fagen would want the solo ripped ...as they would expect more from the guys they bring in. I like that approach myself where you take the track as a template and then move it on...but that does depend on 1) having a killer player on the solo, and 2) the audience letting you get away wih that. For a SD tribute band, that must be a close call as the original guys are always top-notch... damned if you do and damned if you don't. If you don't rip it..some idiot is going to assume you can't... ????

Of course, with 2 cabs...you need to know both cabs are working. If you know the system, you'll likely hear the power/output being down, but if you don't know, then you might not realise one cab isn't functioning.. so devise a simple test here as well.

Did a very nice beer and music festival the other week for pretty decent dosh and promptly got booked again for next year. Just putting together the proposal for the show with upgraded requirements and spec and looking to see who we can add to our bill. The only gigs we are losing is a few pubs...and tbh, we don't much mind that is they are only paying £250...which seems to now be the default fee around here. Everyone is mindful of that so I assume they either agree it or don't do them.
Yes, he does. It's too much of a classic solo not to.
Unless you have chops like John Herrington....

Singers man!!! WTF is WRONG with these people??
JTUK replied to Grassie's topic in General Discussion
Having a dedicated singer is always a bit of a gamble. You need someone with stage presence, someone who becomes 'the face' of the band and can captivate an audience. The problem often is that the person who can meet all those criteria AND actually sing is only one twist of DNA away from being a prima donna.
Indeed... getting someone who can really sing AND has presense is a tough ask...you usually get one or the other...but you really really really have to have someone who can sing otherwise the band is a crock.................the rest is the compromise. -
You need to go for a Thunderfunk, Pete

fraid not.....so that is a NO.................!!!!!
I know where you are coming from, but they aren't a budget bass. They are the same price as a Fender American Standard, but you don't get any type of hardcase, or any case at all! Sorry. but the pickup alignment/paintwork/bridge alignment really does bug me when a £300 Squier CV is almost perfect.
Have to go with this... If the argument was that these flaws..my words..couldn't be ironed out on any budget bass, then fair enough...I'd pay the extra for the real deal but I don't think it is a QC issue as such, it is a Lakland issue.. There is a certain level of finish/QC I'd expect on a bass upwards of £1000.....

Great part, Pete... I think there is loads of room to mess with this and still get all the best bits in.... the key to the song is the great piano and drums anyway... but, tbf, everyone gets a decent crack at it... The bass just has to keep it moving...which is no given as this could get pretty dirgy if you don't get to breathe AND swing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylr2D4Pwn58

Sad indeed.... Always liked what he did in that band.
-
Depends how you record it.. Line by line or in-one. You need continuity through the track and you need to hear it with the gtr's bells and whistles in there and you will probably not have room for anything else.... So just go for killer sound and a few low key fills... You'll be lucky if it survives anyway but at least everyone in the band will know who trashed the bass sound... Lol.

Why look for a bass player when you could have a guitarist instead?
JTUK replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
Not sure about that.... If I want a keyboard, I want someone with loads of time on that instrument. .... And if I want a piano player I don't want someone who says he plays keys... He needs to be a piano player first. If you can have a choice of someone with 20 Good years on their main instrument, you don't want some one who put their hand up and says 'I'll give it a go' Thanks but no thanks. -
we are booking for Oct.... only pubs tho... parties take care of themselves.
-
we generally put the price up................

I don't know any guitarists that would be any good... Even tho they are mean gtr players.... -
Singers man!!! WTF is WRONG with these people??
JTUK replied to Grassie's topic in General Discussion
Unreliable or useless people will get known for that and therefore find their own level. Most outfits realise that the whole deal takes more than just being to sing or play well. Of course, this are very important and can define the band on that alone, but no one wants to work with anyone that is too much like hard work... Arrogance in a certain way is necessary but you don't need a total jerk about it so you are best off without him..he'd let you down in another instance anyway, sooner or later. The band needs music chemistry and personal chemistry as well but sure, even when you think you have those components it still needs work to keep things going..and you have good and bad times. But I'd let this guy go, from the tone of your post... no question and he has probably done you a favour. -
The Thunderfunk has a switch-able fan (generally for studio use) and in fact even with the fan off at a gig, the amp can dissipate the heat without the need for a fan so long as you aren't cranking it/going daft.
I've cranked it with the fan off...which as you know you can hardly hear anyway so not entirely to blame and the amp ran VERY hot..as hot as my SWR which has heat sinks only, and it did fine. I wouldn't want to do it often, but this testifies to the sheer quality of the components and build of both, IMO... to run that hot and not miss a beat... I don't think many make amps like these anymore... sheer quality.
-
I was thinking Paul Turner..but couldn't get a good enough look...
-
I have a 400w amp that can run stereo. Runs VERY hot and you could almost burn yourself on it. Works very well and is very well engineered so it doesn't need a fan. Later models included one but I prefer amps now that have switchable fans if they have to have one at all. But the fan on my current amp is very quiet I never hear it running anyway.
-
I don't think many amps are built to be able to run passive... I think you need to be very sure of your design and your components and this is generally against the cheaper ethos of amps these days.
-
2 pubs this weekend, and tbh, a struggle for the band on both. We performed well enough but I don't think we are enjoying these types of gigs after the summer of festivals we've had. Hopefully, just a temporary blip. Crowd enjoyed them both tho........

What is your favourite brand of strings? (Survey)
JTUK replied to davidmpires's topic in General Discussion
Used DR's ever since the Gallery started stocking them but I don't find the premium worth it anymore. I've used many brands this last few years ever since I changed basses ..and therefore the peg config. Hon runners-ups are Ken Smith and XL pros, and also La Bella Super Steps for the Taper on all strings but I now use Newtone who will make me up the same set in their Diamond series with T core on all 4 strings. They aren't as zingy out of the pack but they last a long time..compared to DR's for example... so if they dull off a tad, the drop-off isn't as noticeable.. I have had a set on since Xmas..which is unheard of for me... and I am about to put on a new set. They look fanatasically clean out of the pack... and this is part of my pet theory of degraded metals in some strings makers.. So..Newtone, all the way. Just about to order a new batch now. and the price for 5 is very very good, IMO. -
Had a look at a Tyler gtr..and that was better than the Line version, but not by £1800...ish..!! Sounds were ok on the flick of a switch... and would have been useable for a gtr but bass..??? No, A Jazz has 3 sounds...how many more can you use..? Studio..?? er...No, so I agree, I can understand why the idea died

Carvin Basses - Why Have They Never 'Made It' Over Here?
JTUK replied to merello's topic in Bass Guitars
The UK distributor priced me up a new SB 5 string and it ended up being as expensive as a USA Fender Deluxe. In the USA the gear is excellent value.
Agree.... and as much as you may not want to, no one is going to go Carvin over a Fender....assuming either is made well enough. -
Brinsley Schwarz were on - in fact IIRC it was the same OGWT clip as posted above. IMO pub rock hasn't aged very well. Most of it sounds fairly tame and weedy these days especially in light of what was just around the corner. For me it just goes to show how desperate the UK music scene was for some decent rock between the end of Glam and the beginning of Punk for most this to have attracted any kind of attention.
I'd go along with this....most of the acts would be poor pub bands these days. But then there are pub bands and pubs bands even on the local circuits, IMO.
