1. can you do a happy birthday to a man that is dead..??? just sayin'
2. Which is why I don't use Micros... and I don't think 20lbs is heavy for an amp anyway. I understand weight is a consideration, of course, but there are compromises also....so I will take a a very well eng'd piece of kit ...and maybe pay a premium for it.. to know that even if I work it VERY hard I can get it repaired rather than have to write it off.. and once you are out of warranty, this may be the choice you are left with. I accept the washing machine and PC argument that they are so cheap that after 4 years or so, you just get a new one...but with subjective things like sound..this is a whole new ball game as far as I am concerned. Personally, I am not totally convinced that Micro/class D, NEO or composite cabs are the answer.... I've been able to pick holes in all the stuff of that ilk, I've tried. I might be coming round to the thinking that there is nothing to really beat a C_Audio type quality amp into some Martins that QSC can't get anywhere near, for example. its basically called ooomph...
3. If your amp doesn't really deliver what you want, look for a new amp.. Personally not a fan of throwing effects in front of the pre stage.... as it may well be poorer quality...but that also depends how much you spend on the amp anyway. You might need a decent hybrid amp..with valve pre which you can overdrive...and then switch back to clean. Not many amps can do this well enough, IME... so I'd get an amp that could do your core sounds..and it may well be that you need two amps. 2 amps that I know can do clean and O/D to a degree...are SWR SM series and Thunderfunk which has a switch simulator. I would also think Eden do one as well. Maybe the Ag500 twin channel.. From your initial post... clean and fat and Paul Turner aren't a zillion mile away from each other anyway...???
4. If it were me...and I don't know what the JB rig has that is any different.. suspect no tweeters which wouldn't/shouldn't add a premium, to my mind..but I'd get the 102 combo and add another MB 210 underneath. From the OP... either cab should fit as you are very unlikely to run that amp max'ed out..as I doubt the amp could handle that, tbh.. so any decent cab with a rating about 250 watts should be ok...but for the first gigs, I'd be REALLY listening. I say this, as I have had too many cabs struggle over the years so it may well be more a result of that than today's supposed better technology not actually delivering. The very cheap tat you can source from the Pacific rim is not the most relaible/resiliant, IME...
5. I would think weight would be the reason for wanting to swap out the originals.
6.
I thought he was well-known as a "tickler"... I find there's a change in tone depending on how hard you attack the strings, but beyond that, if you pluck too hard, it begins to limit your speed. Your hands may vary...
If by that you mean he has a light touch... then not by any stretch as far as I am concerned. Heavy clancky tone which works very well in context..not that I follow his playing that closely, but any video will show him glasping tightly the neck and hitting the strings hard. For sure there are heavier hitters around..
7. Really...?? I wouldn't describe Steve Harris as a touch player..?? also appears agrressive and heavy to me.. You can see this this in both his left and right hand, IMO. both are a grippy approach.
8. Understand your frustration but I would generally buy Quality amps out of warranty..so basically SH and then I would expect that quality to come to the fore if/when I needed it worked on. I have a very solid and sorted designer/engr who can make sense of anything, so as long as the core components are good...and therefore avoid cack kit for this reason... then it should be easy to fix..and easy to work on. From this POV, I would expect EBS to qualify but I don't know this model This another reason why I don't like makers to have budget lines... or like budget lines in general
9.
Just my 2p, but I think Bartolini pickups and pre amp sounds better than Fender's, and you'll never sound like Flea so get the best sound you can and sound like you.

Just my 2p, but I think Bartolini pickups and pre amp sounds better than Fender's, and you'll never sound like Flea so get the best sound you can and sound like you.
Yep..agree about Barts..and the Flea thing has sailed and he is the best at sounding like him so leave that alone, IMO. I could also add..why would you want to sound like Flea..but that is a whole new set of posts..!!! but seriously, study him, take the best bits that you like about his style and add it to your own...there is very little mileage in cloning someone else...
10.
Personally I think bass amps sound better at lower volumes in most rooms as you're less likely to be overworking the amp, and less likely to be getting reflections al over the place
I think this can be true.... but it does depend on the amp, IMO, and this aspect seperates the men from the boys as to the REAL quality of the amp.
11. All you will get is what most want to hear... from their own personal perspective. and if you have a few like minded souls in the room, then you can have your own little fanfare, but it still will not amount to a hill of beans...
12. Ring before midday..... when thry may have less customers in
13. the worst thing to want to have to hear is a 'singer' struggling for notes..... it moves the band towards crap status quicker than anything... If they can't pickup on this then they deserve to loose gigs and an audience...which they probably wont have much anyway
14. Vocals are everything so we go with what the vocals can do ... And he is very capable anyway. Why you would want to hamstring your main focal point? If the song doesn't then work, then we bin it. .. But then we bin songs that don't work anyway... For whatever reason.
15.
The new chap gives me a 'WTF' look if I deviate from either the actual line or a root 5th groove. It has knocked my confidence of playing in the band situation.
I'd laugh at this, tbh... unless the guy REALLY has it down, which I would doubt in the majority of cases. But..before you start on a ruck... just consider what he brings to the party...
16. Drummers.... can't shoot 'em..
17. Just play the one you are interested in and go from there. There are as many old dogs out there as new dogs, IME.. Worse bass I ever had was a 75-ish Jazz so don't get suckered into that trap. If you find the bass you want, then pay what is it worth to YOU..
18. Yes..but on a phone connection ...not so easy to sweep between posts.. That is my story..
19. The OP said gig rig... That is what I gig with, so that is how I answered the question. If defined as amp and cab well, that is another story
20. Unless you know how to match up a chassis with a cab I would go with the Specific Ashdown replacement. It may not be the best chassis ever but it will suit the cab dims so unless you know better, I wouldnt just slot anything in there. I did this with NEO's and it didn't work Afaiwc..... Just my 2p...
21. Didn't see that coming.... Hope they work out.
22.
For me... at replacement prices..just shy of £10k -ish
If you want to know how I value my gigging rig at shy of £10k to replace, consider 2x Sei J5's Thunkferfunk 550-A amp racked with a tuner 2 DB210 Or I might take out 2 Berg NEO's instead but if it is either, or.... So if anything was stolen I'd commission 2 new Sei J5's and go to Thunderfunk for a 750 as they don't make 550's anymore. I'd stick with Aguilar cabs. My gig bag must have £3-400 of stuff in it.... If you include a pedal/DI box, mic, cables. So, if pond life emptied my car.....??????
23. I would just add the Jretro to your Wizards..... The Pre has oomph and you might not need it in the pickups as well....it could end up as too much.... People don't seem to get that too much BASS is not good for tone.... You can't run the Pre @ +15 db anyway unless you have no idea.. If you think the pickups lack tone, then that is another issue
24. 2 x210 gets my vote.... You can raise them higher should you need to but you can run one for quiet gigs or two for that decent stage rig. I'd expect most decent 410's to out perform most other configs if that is your remit.... But will loose out on weight and carry which wouldn't be a consideration for me.
