1. Best buy...in terms of everything..IMO..goes to the G Heart-Core but I suspect the OP requires a rig rather than just the amp. And I would also suggest that he is new to this amp world so needs a bit of background to the stuff on offer. If he has £500 to spare and just needs basic power... I'd say look at Ashdown and TE and he should have change to spare...you might throw in GK there as well.
2. I looked at them pretty closely a few months back in a large music retail shop which had a good few basses. Nothing stood out, tbh... but they were no worse than the other more glam basses they stocked and I think the shop failed to set them up properly.....BUT.... as they had about 40-50 basses, this would be a major HASSLE everytime new stock was delivered...!!!!! I would take a few tools like allen keys to the shop.... and if they are keen to sell, they might tweak the bass..as GAK were prepared to do. My initial feeing about Sandbergs was that they were ok but not worth £1400 ....£1100-ish is better but I would say £7-800 for VGC SH i what I would look for. Having said that, they were relic'ed, so ...??? ha ha But G, you probably have a better idea than me what you get for that money these days.
3. give them the benfit of the doubt and the chance to rectify... and then go from there.
4. no, ...but the singer is the most important.. As you have found, everything goes thru the singer and you live or die thru their performance. Crap singer = crap band and this may just about be rescued to a tiny degree if they have charisma and energy but that is no real substitute. Everyone remembers a bad vocal...more than the gtr killing a solo. You are only as good as the main vox..no way round that, IMO
5.
Ello mate. Yes the triad is great. The redhead unfortunatly is'nt powerfull enough to run both so the plan is to get a bigger amp to run the triad. The amp was checked by dave lunt in stockport last week so a clean bill of health was given. Hope all is well for you.
Really..the Super Redhead is 400, isn't it..?
6. [sub]But....they are great stage cabs..which is why they are used so often in that context.[/sub] [sub]For stages, you really don't want bassy cabs that bleed everywhere..it will get there anyway... but you don't want to help it any more than you can. [/sub] [sub]Gtrs detuning into bass territory is a problem best solved by not allowing them to get down there.[/sub] [sub]It can be the same with piano players and their LH.. the only difference with keys is that they may realise they have stepped on your toes when you stop playing[/sub] [sub]and given them a 'look', but with some gtrs..??? would they care...? you are lucky to be on their stage with them :lol; [/sub]
7. Close..but am working..bug..!!
8. One of my most memorable gigs was at the Colne Blues fest a good few years ago... when we meet up, they still talk about it..!! Glad it is still going... haven't been for a while
9. No..but I had a few done for me... it was good to experiment and I learnt you can have too thick a gauge and/or too many winds.. and powerful is not necessarily better for tone..AT ALL..!!
10. Don't get me started trying to compare Lynott, Geddy Lee and Harris against truely great players, but you might win the popularity contest..
11. As per the title question..... No, slap is very easy to play if you aren't that good an allround player but then there are guys who take it to another level. so there is good slap and bad slap... and then there is a time and a place for it. There must be a zillion types of ways to play certain lines but slap dates pretty fast with so many doing it. Guys like LJ, MK and Flea all stood up a good few years ago...and probably only Mark King could make any decent sense in todays world against guys like Caron. Funnily enough, the guy who was supposed to have started it all..has a pretty timeless take on it, IMO and is still as funky as f***...so it just goes to show..you can trill all you like but some guys have more than most... Check out LJ.. he is pretty unique in his style..and he probably hasn't changed it very much at all... but he stil kills it... everyone else if so much more huff and puff and goes nowhere
12. Do you mean just an amp as you already have a cab...or do you need a cab as well...? if the former, then you have a decent budget, if the latter, then things get a bit more difficult..but still achievable.
13.
In my head trace is one of the most coloured tones around!
I'd go with that.... really didn't liked the typical brittle graphic sound.and the only think that could downgrade that influence was a few valves in the output stage. Liked the twins and quattros.. in moderation.
14. [sub]Not good...if you know what the cab can produce, then it must be the amp.. I'd level everything at 12'..and see what control can do what.[/sub] [sub]Maybe the amp didn't like sitting around doing nothing for 6 months and you have killed one of the valves...[/sub] [sub]Don't really know the amp...and valve amps aren't famed for EQ... but this is beyond that, I'd guess.[/sub]
15.
All the pub gigs I've done over the last 20 years have been with a Trace Elliot AH100 amp and a single 15" cab and I've never had either of those problems. Never run out of headroom either.
You might be surprised to know how many bass players think that.... but everyone else thinks their sound is not very good. Now, I don't know your sound but I stand by my comment that bass [players ..certainly round here..tend to be lazy and rock up with a single cab...typically a 15"...get a half decent sound at sound check and then lose it completely when the gig volume kicks in. If you play with sorted drummers...you will be surprised how good they are at picking up sounds and all you need to hear from them is ..'nice bass sound'..and when pushed, they will tell you all about the guys they play with, with a very average sound. I think it is quite true that bass players can try and tweak the last drop out of an amp...as it is underpowered against the rest iof the band...and they are so maxxed out on the EQ that the only way it can cut thru in terms of volume..means the sound is terrible and pretty much unusable. Now, if the bass player has an unforgiving technique as well...you will be wanting to bury that in a gtr mix, for sure The worst thing you want to do..IMO..is be chasing a bass sound with no headroom. You'll be lucky if you only sound crap...
16. Nope..sorry..but that acoustic link is a mess as well....
17. I felt like posting on that Vegas gig which was truely awful all round to be frank...and Entwhistle should be rightly canned as the worst culprit. It isn't the most gracious think to say.... but the current deps couldn't make a worse hash of it if they tried.. in fact they give the band gets some well needed cohesion. They weren't bad at the Olympics but these old acts really need to look at themselves... It isn't the first time of late that people have said tsome should retire... will check out the link
18. entirely sympathise with a diferent tack.. Some of the best paying events can be as much about the postering of the clents and clientele that all the background stuff needs to be seemless and invisible. The band and music is a given, pretty much and they certainly wont clear the dance floor..but the event organiser will not appreciate any nit picking or things that are 'noticed' so that may mean the cables need to be tied away and colour co-ordinated and it is when the punter couple has paid £200 or a £1000 plus for the table 'invite' that the going gets tough... It is beyond us to want to cope with such detail but if we are the 'right cup of tea' then ok... we might do it. And the more money you are after. the higher the stakes and the girl singer puts her outfits on bands expenses...etc etc
19. OK..but you are trying to sell to a market where you might be something like the icing on the cake...functions of all kinds....you need to upto par with the rest of the whole package, catering, venue general marketing etc.. One things I would suggest though..if you are trying to sell to top functions...I'd go with what all muso's would say when offered the job.. where..? how much..? dress code..? and what are the times..? I think your photo gallery needs some attention... as the pics seem to clash with a typical black tie event..which might be what you want to chase reading your MO..and hoodies, for example isn't going to sit too well with £100 a ticket balls...??? The band may be hired help..but you don't want to actually look it, IMO, just sayin'
20. not ideal storage from the sound of it..... and I think the problem is some sort of corrosion. New chassis and a lesson learned....??
21. A rig capable of delivering 300 good watts should be the norm ....and either use half that or if you need more have a rig with a lot in hand in both amp output and cab handling. Single chassis combos (pushed ) tend to struggle to my ears....if the amount of times I hear them round here is anything to go by...
22. never had to retro fit a JE and always been very happy with the passive tone. I use the pre and just embellish the natural sound and I am not into massive tone shaping the bass 99% of the time... I also soundcheck passive first as sometimes this works really well,,and the pre is just that extra little help onboard. If you want a pre to change the inherrent sound then you are approaching it the wrong way, IMO.
23. website is ok/fine... but I'd tone down the rhetoric somewhat myself... and a pet hate of mine is studio recorded tracks demoing your work as it means nothing unless you sound like that live and most don't...but then we get into how valuable these sites anyway IIRC..we get all our work from referral and THEN they go to the website .... but then we are also pretty poor at ''working' ourselves in that way.
24. Do websites get any gigs? sure, you would refer to one if you wanted to know more etc etc...but I doubt they will get manys gigs blind. But I also hate myspace efforts so well done for setting up your own.
