Don't know... Never slavishily followed anyone anyway..always nicked bits here and there and had a keen ear, IMO, but I pretty much put my own spin on everything I play so I have my own style. If there is anything I like, I nick it but am nowhere near a clone and you wouldn't be able to pick up who I listened to most in my formative years. I guess I listened to too many players to follow just one theme.. but I don't relate to anyones playing above anyones elses when working out tracks as I'll cop the feel and what I think the track is getting at and then do what I do...

I may sell my gear , then what??
JTUK replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
If you aren't playing bass in any form, then sell the lot.. as a bass player out of touch isn't going to be much use to anyone and it will take a very concerted effort to get back into things and the groove. I think a break can be a very good thing indeed but don't undestimate the comeback trial.... I would keep the best bass for 6 months min tho -

It either hits the mark or it doesn't and I would imagine if they were able to hit that spot, they could be magical...but the musicianship ..or lack of it, made that a pretty hairy ride. Not my staple listening but I've liked the New Order diet a bit more.. Each to their own

Loved the demo with the TC 210 cabs, If my needs weren't well covered, I'd have looked at this more closely as 1st impressions were very favourable. I can't coment on how it works with MB cabs but I would have pursued the TC cab option anwyay on the basis of the demo's I've heardf/played.

I'd take your GB amp and Berg cabs.... should be quite a small footprint. Not a fan of using single 112 cabs, but in this case, should be ok..how much smaller can you get anyway..?

OK..just a few thoughts and appreciate that a certain mod or change of tack can be months of work Like the idea of the mid range unit...a LOT...!! General aesthetics start off well..but I wonder how well that dull grey livery will cope with a few miles on the clock. Not talking about robustness of the cabs here or the finish so much..... but will they still look good in a few years time..? I'd be thinking a darker colouring.. maybe just a simple mean black.. Also, not sure the handle/stacking arrangment works in terms of looking the part. I don't know how much the finished price will be but in terms of simple elegant 12's..., Berg, Ag DB and Baer, to name a few, all look top notch. There is nothing iffy about the cosmetic design IMO with those.... and if you are pitching against them with the price, these will be the standards you will be judged against..?? My 2p... well, you did ask..

You have to work out where you want to be and how you can get there... Some bands can do this easily and quickly and naturally as they just have that 'thing'... others might have to plan somewhat, but you should know where the end route is. If you are playing covers, then a few thousand £'s is as much as you can expect to get...and you'll likely need an angle for that level..maybe a few 'stars' names, maybe a sorted function/review type show.. . Tribute bands can get there..but that takes a premeditated route and that isn't for us anyway. Original's have the better route but you must bring something to the party...and the haul is likely to be slower as you build up a fan base... You can intersperse originals with your covers set but you still need to be different.. and the songs need to work. Nobody wants to book the same act over and over which is the mistake that pub bands make when the go for the 80's classics... ho hum, so does everyone else..!! so where do you get the premium from...?? A common theme of mine in all things musical is that you need some 'personality' in what you do..and what the band does...and many things might constitute this, but you need something...you definitelty don't need to sound like someone else....or else you'll never get out of those pubs. But if you are seliing, someone has to be buying...so attention to getting these two close is paramount..

I think we have missed one or two gigs this summer that might have been of value to us from a PR POV but we couldn't get agreement from ALL in the band to do them so we passed. You can spend an awful lot of time doing free dates so I'd suggest you set aside 3 dates per year MAX. 3 is too much for us, and we ask for exes for a charity bash after we look at the set-up VERY carefully. We have noticed a few venues very keen to host these bashes but wonder if they contribute anything else... ..say, from the all-day beer sales..??? I don't really agree with free shows as I think if you don't rate yourselves worthy of a fee, why should anyone else..?? but it is not as simple as that. By the end of September, we will have done quite few festivals and been paid at all of them....and some are amongst our better paying gigs so not pub money.so I struggle with the 'free' idea, to be honest. So, I concur with the earlier post that in an ideal world nobody would pay for free but some do..for their own reasons... just don't ask me to do the same.

Forget what is out front as that is not much of a concern.... Or rather you aren't mixing, so you need to concentrate on the signal you control. In that sense straight out the bass in fine as that is your purest bass signal anyway rather than amp DI. Your next concern is the monitor mix so my first question is how many mixes do we have and what mon/side fill power do we have. Then I decide whether I take a back line. If they say something like turbo sound or Martin then I begin to trust them... If they come back with others then it is a 50/50 call over who I give control on my monitor to.

I guess he should be there..if he can stand up the entire gig, but that applies to all of them. A final chance to see this band, I'll guess..

I swapped out ceramics for NEO'S and the result was weak. The volume was pretty much there but the cab didn't work....... And it might be argued that I didn't prepare the cab for the new chassis' but others who did it said it worked very well. I couldnt agree less..... And subsequent NEO cabs I've used have the same sort of feeling.... Close but not the cigar for me.. How do I explain that....? I can't. Maybe I don't like the 'sound' of NEO... ???

You know, I don't know as I don't focus analally on anyone any more. I am quite happy catching snippets here and there although I was never a slave to any one guy. I knicked things from whoever I liked... Or whatever I liked and threw it altogether.... But I always used to hum licks when I was away from an actual bass and I actually sound like that now when noodling. I have pretty much always done my own thing and I am less convinced I copy well... Which is just as well as that whole rip thing bores me senseless. I want to hear people who put it down well and convincingly and I no more want to hear Flea clones than mm or mark king but I do want personality and a good technique with effortless fluid lines. I have a few influences from afar.... Up to a point... But I never have 'heroes'. I guess you would never be able to say who I have spent a long time listening to as it is all buried and mixed up with so many but I have listened a lot.... And with a decent ear and reference, I think. But that is just my opinion.

Can't quite sense the tone there....lol

Sure.... And I don't. Good pub band player tho'. Lol

Buckeye Burl Yann 5 strings NT + Yann bass handmade 100%
JTUK replied to Bassmachine's topic in Bass Guitars
Yes, good luck indeed. I hope you can make these instruments work at some point. -
I use the word 'chummy' as in he tries hard but it doesn't really work. There is a lot of huff and puff but no real zing or panache in the end product. He isn't a slick enough player for the things he tries to do but hey, I bet he is laughing all the way to the bank. In a way, not the type of player you'd recommend someone check out but his lines are flash enough to impress on a basic level. I think they work as a band though... Although I wouldn't call them my thing.
-
Because of this thread, I checked them on tv last night at T in the park. I don't get them at all.... No songs no nothing, all eggs in a dodgy style basket but hugely overrated IMO. Oh well, move on.

Classis version..... Always loved doing it when I was in hand that loved H&O. OT, best gig ever by them at the Town and Country

I can't say why people spend their amount of money on their rigs as there is no accounting for someone's taste in sound but whatever you spend better sound good. If you think that is achieved with a cheap bass with dusty strings into a 15" combo then good luck. To make that work will take more that just the kit but by the same token spending loads guarantees you nothing either. There can be huge variation in what people expect to get out the way they use their set-up. People can awfully confused about sound and playability and EQ.

Very nice woodwork... looks great I would be thinking on these lines for my new J5... Nice figure to the woods which would be a sunburst finish... a figure in the neck, a nice RW board with MoP and bound neck..

Very good promo...but I think you need a better spread of numbers demo'd and you definitely need keys or those parts to get the better paid work. I don't think that would be hard to add... A good function band needs to have sounds and voices to stop getting too one-dimensional so keys are a must as would be a second strong-ish lead vocal. As good as the girls voice might be...it can be mroe draininlistening to a female vocal for too long. You may be able to get round this with a compromise short set...but a music compromise in a function band is also a compromise in price. And that could easily be fixed with good keys and BV's

it is VERY difficult. If it is charity and everything is donated free then there is no argument..but when the hall, P.A, bar, costs, then it might be fair for the band to want exes as well... but it doesn't often happen like this. If you are a popular band you could get asked loads and you spend all summer doing free dates...the better ones round here might do 3 free a year, if that. I think you have a better chance of success if you get EVERYONE to chip in.. I know a few musos who would rather volunteer to donate rather than play free..and it may even be more honest all round that way. Best of luck with it...

Not much of a fan... I think the playing is a bit too chummy and always left me thinking it could have been a bit more... Can't say I have listened to him loads tho...

Your methods for learning new songs (covers)
JTUK replied to Cameronj279's topic in General Discussion
I'll write our a chart and note any difficult little bits if necc. I am not so fussed about note for note unless all the others get that too...so a chart is often enough and then we do a band groove and let the song go there.
