Not to labour a point.... but in the interest of exchange of ideas and interpretation, I am not a fan of the amps, which have pretty much all been LM types, when you have to drive them. It is a particular problem for me as I almost need 400-500w, due to playing with a very light touch and everyone I know gets far more 'poke' than I do from their respective rigs... so when I am doing that with most amps, they seem to run out of guts. It isn't that they will not do the volume so much as they will not retain the sounds, I set them up for... You could say set them up for 'loud' but it isn't quite so simple, and Markbass aren't the only amps...by any means, that don't amp up well, by my definition. I just think they soulnd waaay too different thru their gain stages than I like.... but for sure, they aren't alone in that

Yes, no problem. All these threads are about balance and opinions, that's all

I am one who never hears a good sound from anyone using a Markbass and I think it is their cabs. Big fan of the MB 102 combo but you can't turn them up... fortunately. It is a practice/rehearsal amp, IMO I've used various versions of the 112 combo as well with extn cabs and even on stage you hear it start to wallow. And whenever I am out front that is what I hear a few times over...so much so that when I discussed this with a bass playing mate, he said he bought Epis 12's instead..to go with the MB amp. If you know the sounds of Epifanis with their soft pillow, or low mid thud, as I would describe it... that is the attempt of someone trying to tighten up the low end...so to pick these over MB cabs, says a whole lot. Just my 2p....
No
Would have to go with Chris here... You don't get a tone out of these big valve amps so much as you get a 'presence'.. I don't care that much for the EQ on either the Boogie or SVT but the valve power stage just give these amps a stretch that is beyond many others. Plug it in and ramp it up and it is pretty much there... can't explain such a simple thing, but there it is. IMO.

Barefaced Compact VS B stock speaker in dodgy Ashdown Combo.
JTUK replied to gjones's topic in Amps and Cabs
ok..if it works, then fine.... but you are only asking the speaker to do one thing...and it does it to your criteria. My feeling is that a cab that goes to 3.5khz or so is pretty much unusable but I am glad you have your solution. -
..........that there are two things that make me think a band is good - being able to understand (not just hear) what the singer is singing, and hearing all of the kit, with the kit sounding nice and crisp. And for both, you need the gtrs/basses/keys to turn down a bit and realise you all sound better that way.
The number of bands round here who use a vox/gtr player as lead vocal. The problem with that is that he is a gtr player first and foremost and he sings because..he may as well. Big fat NO from me... either the vox are up to being lead or they are not and most are not so that is MISTAKE number 1. This afterthought type of thinking extends to the P.A which might be 300watts into average cabs... so average vox struggle into average sound and you can't hear this whole afterthought arrangement..so MISTAKE number 2... And that all adds up to MISTAKE number 3 where the voxs aren't or can't be loud enough over the band and if, by the rare chance they are loud enough...they aren't good enough to really want to hear them...and round and round we go. We are a loud band..we have a few gears to go through and the drummer is part of that..and I am conscious of being too loud so this is a perennial question to our crowd, but the vox are never drowned out and to the voxs credit, he wouldn't allow that. That is one case of arrogance or whatever you want to bracket it as... as working for the band. He is an excellent vocalist so why on earth would we conspire not to showcase him to the hilt. Despite getting loud, I don't think we ever lose the mix.... altho it may well go in the last few numbers....from my POV... altho no one else has pointed this out

At what stage do you call yourself a bass player?
JTUK replied to Blademan_98's topic in General Discussion
When enough people know about you and call you to play in their bands... over and above other 'players' -
Thunderfunk amps make an amazing noise but most people, including me, seem to run them with the controls flat. I just tweak the Timbre to add a little more bass and the Enhance to add some top and leave the rest at 12 o'clock. The basic sound is full, powerful and clear as a bell and you don't need to do much with it to get a great tone.
Totally agree, If you can't get a good sound out of these amps... it isn't the amp, IMO. I run with the enhance and timbre controls only and only go to them if the room is difficult. They are modelled on the SWR SM400 types which got the model from elsewhere..wont bother to go into the history, but to say that the common factor is the enhance or analyser or whatever they would to call it and a 4 band parametric graphic which has tremendous tone shaping capability. The early SWR amps had same and they were VERY capable but harder to EQ, IMO.. whereas with the TF, you don't need to touch it. Not sure about all the amps on here but Eden were very worthy a few years ago but I'd be very surprised if the TF amps were not in another league all round.
You're right - staying in watching X Factor is almost exactly the same as going to a gig.
You didn't get it first time round... I've spelt it out for you, and you still don't get it. Your name really suits you but I can't be bothered anymore.. -
I doubt we can know how much of an undersell it is..... going rates are all relative....bla bla.. But you should all have..or all SHOULD, sit down and discuss what you will go out for under certain parameters and conditions. I wouldn't blame the guy who goes out and gets the gigs so much..I blame the rest of the guys not setting understood and agreed guidelines. Some guys are very active and others not so,...for all sorts of reasons, but the guy getting gigs needs support not a bollocking. Accept that you didn't have a decent system in place..and therefore fulfil it/them thru gritted teeth..and then get an agreed price structure for future dates. We do this with a online calender..where everyone updates it and then I send out confirmation e-mails with price and any detail for a quick check by all. I expect them to come back to me within 24 hrs latest...and they do..if they have any probs as I am telling the venue/booker we will confirm within that time
Not really. Some of the public wants X Factor...but only some of the time. At other times, The Public might want to just relax and read a book, or go for a nice meal with someone special...or maybe go and see a live band doing songs that remind them of their younger days, or just songs that they know and like to dance to. Shocking, I know...
That wasn't my point at all... My point was that people on here can call shows like X factor and the like as 'pap' and trivial and contrived and because of that they think that is a curse on music as a whole. Well, that is one point of view...which, IMO, has a degree of truth... But those same people will then say that they will play anything that the paying public wants when it comes to their own shows... so can be accused of...if you reallty wish to do that.. ..of pandering to the public and lowest common denominator in exactly the same way as the dreaded Cowell does. It just kind of struck me as ironic and funny... -
Help playing with an injured left index finger?
JTUK replied to Themrperson's topic in General Discussion
Forget the band practice... it isn't worth a set-back if you have be ready for a gig soon. I think you will have sprained the ligament and these need time and rest. No shortcuts on that....as ligaments are very slow to heal... or, depending how you injued it..it could be broken...but that amounts to the same thing as regards the healing process...they might splint it.. Ask a Dr as the detail here isn't enough to even guess..not that our speculation is any real prognosis -

Not a fan of random and prefer more continunity in a set. We need/want the songs to sit well with each other...otherwise it is like throwing mud against the wall hoping some will stick... -

Not sure some cloth is robust enough but that decision aside... you need to understand where you can use it and how often ..and this means you need to know the stage area and confif. Ours is about 8x 2 feet.. no idea why it came in this measurement but it works .... At some places, it is inadequate.... but at others we just can't use it...hence the more important decision is in the use of, IMO...

Have to say..this would worry me.... I know you can't legislate for certains things failing...but all the same, the only experience of the last 20 years I've had with things going wrong has been the result of external forces..ie, amp dropped under power. Why on earth a component should fail otherwise is not something I've come across .. Poor qc, design or bad luck ..?? A one off is one thing.... any sort of pattern is not really good enough and something you remember in brand terms...

What strikes me is that you will get things like X factor and Cowell absolutely panned on here...and rightly so, IMO.. its basic cack with the chance to throw up a decent singer once in a while...but there you go..!!! but then you'll also get people here saying they will play anything that the publlic/punters wants.. well, the public wants X factor if you believe the viewing figures...?? Make up your minds.... I don't care so much where you stand but be consistant one way or another. That would be my take -
Had a good one in a new pub for us and we were coming off a bit of downtime... so hadn't played together for about 3 weeks or so. And then we threw in all the older material just to catch us out..... well, it didn't so people must have put their time in and it went really well. Lots of Impro and the band was cooking... maybe we should do this more often. One thing, I think we should do... is be willing to change the set on the run..as opposed to 'predicting' it over a week in advance. It became clear they wanted our older muso set rather than newer stuff...but we didn't really suffer for it....but still something to be aware of... I think this is a throw back to when I was in a very popular function band in my teens and the lead singer could read the audience like a book and navigate us thro.. To this day..never met anyone like her for being able to do that. However, the best thing to come out of the evening...from a musical POV..is that we have a couple of showy gigs to prepare for and we can afford to augment the band... so we will like to add a horn section and girly BV's... That will set up the gigs as something different..and be worth the ticket..??

Have to say that Carlberg isn't really a benchmark to hit, tbh... But some of their ads might be

Pubs are silly money (£250-450) but anything out of a pub starts at £450 for friend's parties, and others start at £600. Weddings ..?? we don't do them unless we have a very good reason and they start at £900. We aren't a function band so we'll do a 2 hr slot maximum and we aren't going to get stuck turning up mid afternoon etc..and playing late
