1. I'd check out Sennheiser. Depends on your voice but the SM58 picks up everything...which can be an advantage but not for lead Vox, IMO
2. Great cabs... and they set a mark even now, IMO. In terms of quality, they are worth much more than £150... but then again, you need to get someone to pay what you want. I'd say they are easily worth £250 and will put quite a modern few cabs away in sheer bass playing terms, but they are well built AND heavy which is probably why people don't carry them
3. [sup]If it is a new back injury..as opposed to age etc, I'd geta good physio regime going.[/sup] [sup]You can manage back imjuries easiliy enough, IME..altho it might also depend on the type of injury.[/sup] [sup]My specialists says I have two prolapsed disks and I said what does that stop me doing...?[/sup] [sup]He asked me what I wanted to do...so I told him, ski, golf and play music. He said go ahead and do just that....so I do.[/sup] [sup]I also refer to my back physio who has all my history,... once in a while ( maybe once every two years ) so I take notice of what they say.[/sup] [sup]It is all about posture and core.... so learn to handle that, for starters.[/sup] [sup]Some Backs can be managed, IME.. 4.
I own the pa mixer and front line. The rest of the band are responsible for their own monitors (in ear or otherwise) and mics. Seems to work OK and spreads the transport issues.
This is how we do it and pay for the P.A per gig. The owner doesn't expect to get the P.A bought for him, as he uses it on other gigs, but carries it and we all load in and set-up. In a 5 piece band we split the take 6 ways and the 6th share goes to P.A, lights, admin and kitty so whoever does what job gets to invoice the kitty for services etc.
5. Played it last night at a party... we had a ball with it... don't play it often so it can be quite fresh..
6.
My band use some backing tracks, we use some keyboard and vox. We have had the discussion about getting a keyboard player time and time again but always find the HDR is way more reliable. This is no different to a lot of profesional bands out there. Rush for one uses them and who calls them karaoke?
Me.... and your Muse and other bands but their fans don't seem to mind. It is what it is..
7. I have Rig 1,2 and 3 and choose whichever depending on what I expect from the gig. One of the amps is pretty much relegated to a practice amp now but it is a very capable amp..just a shade outclassed by the other two so they get to go out and play. Rig one is the full beans rig, for stages really and good load-ins only, 750-900w. Rig 2 gets the most outings and is quality( 550w), but I can interchange components to what I want, really
8. LG... still got IT..!!!
9.
Am I allowed to comment on the poor singing technique of the young girl in the white top (Ellie Goulding)
sure...
10. Don't think Larry Graham tore the place up at the time like Hendrix did... maybe he was referred back to in the same terms, but not at the time. As for their long term influence, maybe he is getting right up there...
11.
That would be nice to be able to have a choice of rigs that i know i can achieve what i desire from and fit the gig.... But your thought of too much rig for the gig... that's what i worry about. If the gear i use is what get's me the sounds i use then it's not too much rig right? I guess i would like others at gigs to understand that and not think i'm some kind of pretentious pleb that wants to show off there gear or something.... O_o
When I say too much rig for the gig... Some amps are just too damn loud..... and not suitable for the pub, for example. I used a DB750 in a room and was asked to turn up.... ??? I don't like the sound in this place at the best of times... too many low beams and knooks and crannies, so you don't want POWERFUL bass swimming around.. and this amp is POWERFUL, and the drummer was affected by the bass so much, he was feeling sick. Now, I turned down to the level i felt was ok for the mix and he was ok... but it left unattended, that could have spoilt the whole gig by thinking it was ok loud, when it was too much loud. For that gig I would normally run a 4-550w rig into 2x112's... For larger, I would use 550w into 2x210 and then there is 750w into a stage rig... I am not a loud player into the amp so need the headroom but even so..sometimes you can have too much. Of course, you can turn down, but then you can use a lighter amp..and not carry a rack weighing 60lbs or so. There Is a difference in the sound as well... the tone is consistant and to my liking but some amps have SO much more balls that others.
12. I have 3 rigs ..and choose which one I want to use according to things like stage size/venue size or load-in etc etc .. I don't take out pdedals but am thinking of adding a pedal board for one or two tracks. It is not about what I want to carry..it is more about how much space I have at the gig. Some rigs are just too much rig for the gig, IMO.
13. yep...you either kill it or KILL it.
14.
I always find it a shame that the majority of bass stores are based down south. I understand they probably need to be there to get the 'London' area, but it'd be great to have one closer up NARTTTHHH. I await the 'drive down'/'get a train'...but city centre living means I sold my car as it was just rusting away sucking up money. Plus I work long hours in the week so the weekend is spent getting on with other things. Argh. Such is life. I'd love to get to Bass Gear. Some great gear in stock. I also keep thinking about ordering a set of DB112s...
Location, location etc etc .. very easy for the train and very near London without all the probelms of being IN London, IMV. I guess it is all about your client base.. I am currently doing the same for a DB212 Hmm, G..go for the DB112's and then I swap my AE112's
15.
Thanks John (and everyone else's kind words) ...and thank you very much for the box of goodies received in the post from you! Next time you come, there's a little 'thank you' waiting for you Phil
No problem Phil... let me know if you need any more. Ohh... goodies..? best not leave it too long to pop back up then. I might pop up to see a local gig at some point as well. Hopefully Barrie or yourself will keep me posted.
16.
I was there a couple of months ago and found myself playing http://www.bassgear....oyal-pre-owned/ Not an every-day experience, in so many ways. Great shop, great guy, and let's not forget the great dog.
Agree.., this is the bass that could get me into a lot of trouble ... http://www.bassgear.co.uk/products-page/pre-owned/bass-guitars1/overwater-expression-custom-fretless-5-pre-owned/
17.
What amp did you go for?
I went for a DB750. It is a loud drummer slayer as I can make his stomach turn over ha ha .. I used it in a pub but that isn't the place I will want to use it...it was bought for a stage rig. The previous owner and I agree that this is a modern day SVT ll type amp. Simple but right THERE in terms of its power and clout. You don't need much tone shaping control.. just tune it on and turn it up. I am loving it.
18. It will be interesting to see what bars will pay for Xmas period gigs
19.
I've always found that the players have 'exemplary technique' have so because they have spent years mastering technique, not music. Generally they have no 'feel' or taste and an unhealthy obsession with playing as many notes as its possible to fit in a bar, and a few more for good measure. The expressive players, the ones that have soul, tend to be self-taught and tend not to post videos on YouTube every week showing people their excellent technique... (runs for cover) on another note, I will say that although I can't stand Rush, I observed Geddy Lee's technique, I don't know if its bad or good, but I tried it, it was hard at first but for the first time in 20 years of playing I got the sound I wanted without the string clanking against every fret on the board!
ha ha I would think so... If that is your opinion, then so be it... but it doesn't seem to have done many a classical player any harm. Just on the basis of LJ or Flea videos... you would think you'd help yourself and not ask for problems.. but then, I doubt they thought about it in the early days ... or had anyone to tell them.
20. Seen a very good looking package for £299 and folds up into a pretty small holdall as the bar is collapsible. http://www.themusicshopashford.co.uk/store/index.php?route=product/category&path=115
21. I get all my strings tapered on both my gigging basses... if only to sit lower on the saddle. The single core might be a bit more exposed and breakable...but not if you string it correctly. Certainly for a 120 gauge and up... less is more, IMO
22. What you want from your technique is the ability to do what you want to do..and to do it over a long period of time. So things to avoid, IMO... is odd shapes or stretches and bad awkward positions...and you don't want to be beating your hands up for 30 years. If you play the bass that long and then some, your technique can't be that bad...if you don't have or never have had repetive strain injurys or arthritis. Not saying that is the only reason why you may avoikd these sorts of things, but you can help yourself.
23. The Berg AE112 needs a good pairing ampwise, IMO... and it can have a hardish sound. This is typical of NEO, IME, and I would suggest a GS112 as a cheaper alternative or better still, a pr. These are relatively basic cabs but they do low end very well, and you'll find them easily enough. I think the Berg is a better cab but not worth the premium price. If I could swap my Berg AE112 pr for DB112's then I would as they suit the sound I'm after, more.
24. Maybe I'll never be happy but we have a pretty decent unit, have a lead-in to the better gigs, get decent money and play well for ourselves which always transfers over to the audience. What I would like to change or add... more time in rehearsal and so therefore refresh our sets... including original sets and 'stage' sets.. and I would like to spend time revamping a few audience faves.. We have a few festival dates this year which we need to do something 'special' or different to justify the event ... which means either augmenting the band, which is the easiest but more expensive option and/or add inclusive light/projectior show From the personal side, we are matey, but not so close, but we are professional enough to talk things through and stay on track... The chemistry trumps mateyness everytime, IMO.. if you have both, then great, but if you only have one..my choice would be musical chemistry every day of the week
25.
IME most of the cheaper design and construction techniques that lead to an acceptable 4-string bass, simply don't produce a 5-string bass with a useable low B string.
Agree.
