1. Two ways you can approach it... Get a quality self contained combo you could move around or store in one place taking up little room like a PJB combo... or you could get a quality pre... like the Glokenlang in the F/S, knowing you could add to it for a gigging rig easily enough.. Adding a decent power stage for £2-300 and a cab gets you to £1500 should you want a flexible rig to cover most situations.
2.
The cliched setlist makes me shudder a little but not as much as the thought of seeing it played badly. I can listen to anything if it's played well by decent musos. sh*t played sh*t is a no-no. sh*t played well and I'm interested.
Sure, best way to approach it as you aren't going to control what bands play. of course. If the band has something about them, then you'll stay, .... But a chummy band playing a chummy set is not good.
3.
I disagree so hard with this. When you are learning, the only thing you will learn, or figure out by yourself without a tutor is bad technique.
And I disagree so hard with this...quite simply the most stupid post I've read here for a long time. You might want to rethink that.
4. Was talking about this the other day when the new music shop in town...we now have 3.. were asking about bass tutors. I asked what they thought their market would be and was told beginners whereas I think it would also be gigging players who had got a little bogged down or stuck in a rut. I'd prefer to do the latter but I suspect they wouldn't be regular income..??
5. Dave Pegg does ok with a pick.. in a medium not reknown for it. Glenn Hughes and Roger Glover also did more than straight 8's... Anthony Jackson..?? but he sounds so good whatever he plays. T-Bone..??? there are a good few...for sure. But picks really excel, for me, when you want that strong driving metronome force right in the with the drums. Foos are a case in point Try it with a 4 fingered technique for fun.. which incidently, I think, started way back in the early 80's when Abe L got going
6. Just an observation about the above set... how do you find the diversity of tunes sit with one another..??
7.
I'm still learning about stage monitoring and it seems to me to be more tricky than the FoH PA. it's almost a case of getting the stage monitoring set up first before worrying about the main PA. ......................
ALWAYS set up mon mixes without hinderance from FOH
8. well, there is no doubt that MP and Sadowsky can make some very pretty basses (consistantly the best looking, IMO )...soapbars or not. My next Sei commision will have the look of singles, and probably Barts... altho my best current vintage sound is from soapbars...(also Barts, as it happens) yep..it is tricky...!!!
9.
None of these in the function list. Yet. Just saying that these are almost always on the set lists roud here. At least in the sub gigs I do and the typical bands I see around.
And I would say that is why the pub scene might be on its ar$e in some places... I just think bands should make a bit more of the effort...and even though I think it is true that pub gigs are too much work for the money that shouldn't be the reason for playing everyone elses set... 1 Rehearsal should get 4 -5 songs off... if you've done your home work, so we are saying a set of 22 songs should take 4 or 5 rehearsals. So it wouldn't matter what songs you put the time into..you can have a gigging set up in 3 months or so. I'm with the poster above... play certain songs and it is drink up time ... having said that... if the band has some sort of connection or entertainment about them, then you don't mind as much. I doubt you'll see many of their gigs tho...so from the point of view of return gigs...it would be a 'fail' for me...which has to be in the equation as well..??
10.
I still think their main problem is the use of the word "dep". That to me conjures up a professional player who does this for money, and of course wouldn't for £50. I think if they had used the word stand in, or temp bass player the might not have alienated so many people and this thread would probably be a lot shorter. I used to dep for £150 per gig myself and was the only one that seemed to learn the songs properly, I think the guys reply was pretty spot on, but i know people on here like to pick things apart, word by word because they are better than those who are still trying to make a go of it.
Dave, I haven't got a problem with the term... it is more about the money and the time...PLUS the band. I wouldn't take it if offered ..unless it was a mate and a favour..and even then, I'd not be keen...so I wouldn't be commenting or taking any notice in that regard, but as it is a thread on here, I'll contribute... but it matters not one jot, AFAIAC, who will or will not take it for whatever reasons, otherwise. It is like the 'playing for free' thread..it is all chewing the fat, to me.
11.
Just read the guys reply.....interesting. I regularly get £150 for playing with an 8 piece band,so he's talking rubbish there. I also regularly learn full sets, including 'starts and stops' in one rehearsal (sometimes none-a quick talk in the dressing room and keeping my ears open can usually do the trick-not even that if there are charts). So,again,he's talking rubbish.
Can quite well believe this but without wanting to say too much..it is the band themsleves that need the time put in. It is all about who you can get plugged into re fees. Nobody wants to spend £2k on spec..they need to know..or at least I would if I was the booker. The thing about the current climate is that the consensus around here from the better bands is that the £1400 plus function/wedding fee has dropped off a tad. Getting to that mark is ok.... but it seems a mystical barrier over and above and that has come about in the last few years, IMO and you'll travel for it more often.
12. And to satisfy that LL.... his faves are L.A Woman and anything by the Counting Crows..?? That messes the 80's bands right up... but he will still book them if they are a draw. I honestly think pub LL's are more adventurous than the bands that play the circuit...as are some party planners. 80's and Soul Revue/BB's bands are two a penny round here..... plus of course, Blues outfits..
13. Desk output needs to go to an amp or powered monitor. If you have 2 powered sources you can get two mixes from that IF your desk will support that....or if not, can you use an aux channel..?? I would suggest splitting the two mixes for lead vox and front of stage...and the keys and drums get the second mix.
14. The thing about Mustang Sally is that it can be a killer track in the right context, IMO... but often it is..err...not.
15. We do 'songs' so they have a tune and we like them..and they fit in with the style we want to give the song and the overall band sound. People book us for functions or parties because they like what we do... and we will make it danceable enough to cover a few basses. Altho we like function/party type money we don't consider ourselves a function outfit...unless you like Talking Heads, Doors and Elbow. We might throw in a Killers track .................... there you go
16.
You've just identified the difference between a Pub band and a Function Band.. Pub band - Play what you like for £50 Function Band - Play what the punters want for more.
Not really.... we tell functions what we will do and they can see our set list which we will play for 2 hrs max.
17.
started an 80s function band. Only one other good band doing the same in east Anglian. Except we have female and male box whilst they are just male.
was going to say that most of those songs are 20 years old ..at least. I do find the set choices quite fascinating...why peoplepick what they play, on what criteria and what do they expect out of it. My general take is... if people want me to play what they want/expect, up the rate.. Doing a gig for £50 in a pub and they get what I want
18. ha ha ... that seems like an older set to me as well Not a great lot of thought in that...to be different from a 1001 other bands doing the same circuit...
19. Have they got anyone yet..??? doubt it.
20. yep.... was going to clarify this but thought I'd not muddy the waters further. Singles, twins, triples, split coil, coil tap, double stack and humbuckers... Humbuckers were initially designed to eliminate hum... of course. You might be able to get anything wound in any config you like if you had the casing for it. I found Kent Armstrong very open to doing all this as long as he had the case for it..
21.
fixed
Indeed... a sh*te set all round but it could fulfil a need. 'Sex on fire' could rescue some functions all on its own
22.
Don't know whether this has been done before, but here are the songs I hear most when I go and see a live 'covers' band. Admittedly, they were, and still are great songs, but do WE still want to keep playing them, and perhaps more importantly, do the PUNTERS still want to keep hearing them? It would be interesting to see what songs you guys/gals come up with, and to hear your thoughts on playing the same old songs over and over again. 1. Mustang Sally 2. Brown Sugar 3. All Right Now 4. Born To Be Wild 5. Black Night 6. Sex On Fire 7. Brown Eyed Girl 8. Honky Tonk Woman 9. Maggie May 10. Can't Get Enough
That is a function set.... a pub band wouldn't do very well with a set like that around here
23.
Likewise! I'm not dismissing it without hearing it, and can believe it sounds fantastic at low volumes but would it be enough for gigging with drums and guitar without PA support?
playing at quiet volume, then maybe...but that is where it would stop.
24. There is no given that your current band will be able to make that step so I'd go with Plan A to get a feel for how this thing may work for you...and hope you can stick the contract. It may introduce you to other contacts as well.
25. sure...they look all wrong... and humbuckers sound all wrong. The number of bass players who want a stronger more powerful sound lose sight of the tone that has just gone out of the window. IMO... you can have too strong a signal... something which humbuckers are famous for, I've done quite a few experiments with multiple winds and taps and and my conclusion is that if you want more volume, turn up the amp but don't muddy up the sounds at source..ie at the pickup. Adding is the easy part in tone...taking things away is far harder.
