Dragon's Den - Analogue Optical Guitar Cable
12stringbassist replied to spectoremg's topic in General Discussion
I think the dragons would mainly have been interested in what else the technology could be applied to. -
The choir also apparently had Gizmo guitar chords through a voice box at a low level to thicken it up. I remember that being said as a selling point for the Gizmo at the time of the split.

I like the idea of MusicMan basses but the Bongo looks like it was made out of an old toilet seat. You'll never see me with one of those.
Thanks, but I'm not sure 5 strings are for me (mainly because of the cost of a set of strings - they're already dear enough for 4).
Guitar shows are the answer for cheaper strings.

The thing to do is go into PMT and be prepared to sit down and try as many basses as you like the look of within your price range. If they know you are serious about finding the right bass, they will line them up for you. It's hard to buy a really bad bass these days. There are a few makes that you may not wish to bother with - Eastcourt, etc. What you will be looking for is a bass that you can get a wide variety of pleasing tones out of, through an amp that is not set with the tones extremely boosted. Sit down and alter tones controls, try pickup combinations / on-off, get to understand the basses a little. Listen to what other people are playing, talk to them as they try the basses - see what they like and don't like about them. People love to gab about basses. As to the quality of any of these basses, the Squiers, Epiphones and Yamahas of this world are big-selling guitars because they have most of the features of more expnsive basses at more sensible prices. A really good Squier can sound and play better than a dull average Fender. It's hard to comment on the actual build quality of a particular one individual bass from a production run accurately without dismantling and reassembling it It may not be on your first visit that you find the right bass, but with a bit of effort, you will get closer to knowing what the basses in store have about them that you like / dislike. Good luck.

In your shoes, I would turn up to do the gig, taking something small to use as a bass monitor for onstage. In mine, I would bring the amp and 2x10 from my normal rig. If they would let me use that (or the whole rig) and check my stage volume was suitably low enough at the soundcheck, I would be happier. I have hearing problems with one ear and playing without some backline would not be an option for me. I need some actual sound behind me. It doesn't have to be loud. I remember playing a wedding at a castle in Cheshire a few years ago (below). The DJ took up three-quarters of the stage and said we (a four-piece band at that time) would just have to fit in the space he'd left for us. I told the DJ that he could explain to the happy couple exactly why the band they came out to wactch three times beforehand had walked, or I would catch them on their way in and let them know. He immediately budged up into about a third of the space he was using. The happy couple remained happy and oblivious to his arseyness. The venue in the instance in the original post could quite easily allow a bass amp at low level on stage, with an assurance that it was kept at a low monitoring level, rather than lose a band and ruin the couple's day.

Dave and Billy shared out the solos quite evenly. Dave Edmunds has never particularly been a glory hunter and I read in an old interview (Beat Instrumental or something like) that whoever came up with a good solo usually played it. My pic..

Who on Basschat has the most expensive bass?
12stringbassist replied to Jonny Walker's topic in General Discussion
Warwick Streamer CT and Custom Shop walnut Thumb NT both cost me a few p short of £2k each. Would I spend that much on a bass now? No. -
This is the other one that I ordered. The bolt-on neck version. Both have a little bit of neck dive, but I have never ever been bothered by that. The beck thru white on is the better of the two. I ordered one of the bolt-on's via amazon marketplace and part of the body near the controls was smashed. Returned it.

Quite pleased with this. Plays better than the Gibson's I've been near. Got some cash off the list price too. Had a superb deal (half price-ish) on amazon pointed out to me on a sunburst Epiphone Thunderbird 4 Pro, so snagged that too. A good day's snagging.

Reasons For Getting Fired From A Band Telling the singer that it's not really good enough that he can't keep to an agreed setlist and that getting a guest sax player to come and toot and fart away and destroy our second set, while he goes and sits outside to get pissed is a really good way of getting fired.

We had a good night in Darwen last night. We generally get someone up to play tambourine on one song. Last night's contender was really nice.

Thanks, guys.

Very quickly, without reading the comments above: Homepage - get a head and shoulders shot of the band, or a wide shot that shows you fully. Other pages - the text looks like it is breaking up - except on your gigs page, which is fine. Use that font and size throughout. Gallery page - try to avoid photos with mics in front of the band's faces. The image on the contact page isn't showing. You're welcome to critique my band's site in return! www.wizdomband.co.uk

Reminds me of Dave Hill. He treated his bandmates like sh*t too. His behaviour at soundchecks if he had an audience was so horrible I stopped going to watch the band. I was invited to try out for them at one point when a bassist was leaving and declined.

Instruments unattended in vehicle
12stringbassist replied to arthurhenry's topic in General Discussion
Post-gig, I load my stuff into my car heavy stuff first - both cabs into rear compartment, then bass amp and monitor onto back seat followed by wire bag, multi-bass stand, mic stand and effects bag. Basses are kept well back on stage til i am going and they go in the car last when I am ready to go. The car is locked between trips. When I get home, the basses come indoors straight away. The rest can stay in the car overnight, as I wouldn't like to try to get past my padlocked gates. Effing big spikes on top. I know that thefts happen to people and it's not always easy to secure a vehicle overnight, or always down to carelessness, but sometimes it is. When I read about someone's acoustic going from the back seat of their car in a city centre. I's just not funny, but hardly unexpected. There but for the grace, etc etc. -
After gigs with my regular band, I was called by a guitarist that I do a jam night with on some Sundays, asking if I could play that night as his bassist was indisposed. I'd never met the drummer. And I would have to sing all the songs - a first for me. After an hour or so of printing off a few lyrics (generic classic rock stuff) and wondering what I had let myself in for, I repacked the car, had my tea then set off. I needn't have worried. We went down very well. I must have picked the right songs. One I love Caroline Roll over lay down Don't believe a word slow / fast Boys are back in town Back in USSR Substitute Satisfaction Rebel rebel Shangalang Roadhouse blues Rockin’ all over world Sharp dressed man Walkin' by myself Rosalie Are you ready Rain Tush 20th C boy Purple Rain Born to be wild I saw her standing there Tie your mother down Dakota

Colin Moulding and XTC generally...

I have managed to download a reasonable copy of LOOK LOOK on DVD. -
Colin Moulding and XTC generally...
12stringbassist replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
Where to start depends on what you would like - their early, spiky / quirky material, or their more melodic material (from when Dave Gregory joined the band). You could do a lot worse than buying the 2CD set Fossil Fuel as a starter, it has a couple of non-album tracks. -

New band with near identical name...
12stringbassist replied to BrunoBass's topic in General Discussion
It's also a good story for your local press. Be all good natured about it if you talk to them, saying you think it's quite funny being confused with a bunch of schoolkids who are learning to play... -

On your posters clearly state "NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE INFERIOR *** *** ***" They will do something about their name at that point. I agree about buying relevant domain names.
