1. I will change to my spare if my hands are getting sticky mid-set. Otherwise I just change to it second set. Sometimes I take the 12 string bass out and there are only certain songs I use it for.
2. Very fond of mine.....
3. My avatar pic is the 12-string version of this bass.
4. The 8-string bass was one of two on long-term loan from Hamer. He also used one with a clear yellow finish for a short while. I think he still has the red one, which later had his name added to the headstock.
5. 31 and a doubleneck 6/4. It's an illness.
6. Here's mine. It was a priority to put a strap button on the rear of the body, to stop the bass getting smashed as the strap button on the top of the body (see photo) came away almost straight away. It's a swine to find a hard case for, so it takes turns with a case that holds a fretless explorer bass which lives in a cardboard box otherwise. The build quality could be a lot better. The nut is loose. The tuners are average. I had to pack under the pickups and raise them to get any sort of decent sound. I hate that bridge style. It has a Gibson-ish growl in there. It's doesn't get lots of use, but when I do take it out, people notice it. The balance is what you'd expect from such a pointy bass. Girls like it.
7. I have 4 of the things. Not everyone will like them. That's perfectly ok. I don't really care what everyone else likes. The only have to work for me. I am not fond of John Hall either. My dealings with him were not pleasant. I used to have a similar (in my case almost irrational) hatred of Jazz basses because of one that I used at a jam night. Years later I fell in love with a USA Jazz in America and now I use it regularly.
8. I am on 31. It's a mental illness.
9. My basses and guitars and amps all live in a container that is in orbit above the earth and refuels in space. If it was any different, I would not post openly on basschat about it!!!
10. We need pictures!!!
11. May 2011. They only wanted £2400 for it....
12. The Dick Knight bass owned by Renaissance was for sale at the NW guitar show a couple of years back. I took a pic - god knows where that is. As to John Birch Ric replicas - here's mine. Does it sound like a Ric? - not at all.
13. I got the choice of the first two in the UK at A1 in Manchester> I went for this one.
14. Glad it went well. Usually, saying please leave the volumes and tones as they are set will be enough. I absolutely hate other bands using my gear at shared gigs though and will do just about anything to avoid that. Once played supporting a random version of The Searchers and an apparently ex Eurythmics bass player decided to wind up my mic'd up pair of Trace Elliot's that were set nicely in the mix to Hendrix style distortion, so I had to walk on and switch them back down while he was playing, with the muttered 'you can stop playing and get your own gear out of the van if you do that again'. People were actually running away from the stage. He cleared his side of the dance floor. I do a jam night and the bassists at that know the gear is set up for them and that is how it will stay unless I need to pop on and get them up in the mix. They all behave.
15. Requests for 'Paradise by the dashboard light' always make smile.
16. I think I have been lucky with mine, going by what Muzz said above (thanks). I saw the one that was in PMT Salford, but I don't usually take a bass off the wall unless I intend to buy and at that time I didn't, so I don't know what it was like. I did look at it close up and thought it was a work of art. It really set my mind working. The neck pickup volume on mine is set way behind the bridge pickup, so i need to raise it some more. Though it blends perfectly in the middle position. I can't find any fault with the finish quality or set up and I can only mention the pickup height, which isn't really a fault. I ordered mine unseen and got the last one from woodbrass.com in Paris, much cheaper than UK stockists.
17. The most I have ever paid for a bass is £2000. £11000 is a hell of a price tag. BUT... Fodera wouldn't charge it if some people were not going to pay it. And if someone wants to pay it, then it's worth the money to them. http://fodera.com/in...tless-standard/ It looks to me a bit like an unfinished 80's Yamaha bass.
18. The boots? I wear these at every gig. I could never ever go on in trainers or normal shoes again. Part of the ritual.
19. I know what you mean about the drool of Hall. Odious little man. I had stopped buying guitars but this changed my mind. I would appreciate it if Muzz (who took one back) could tell us what was wrong with his?
20. New bass day yesterday..
21. I blame this man pretty much entirely.
22. My friend Mark and myself were fortunate enough to catch a gig he played with Chris Spedding and Tobi Earnshaw in Bolton last year. He stood around and talked to us for ages afterwards. No big rock star ego or any of that stuff. A lovely humble gentleman. I miss him already.
