1. My friend Mark and myself were fortunate enough to catch a gig he played with Chris Spedding and Tobi Earnshaw in Bolton last year. He stood around and talked to us for ages afterwards. No big rock star ego or any of that stuff. A lovely humble gentleman. I miss him already.
2. My own take on this is that I paid up for my bass for my use. If someone was supporting and their bass packed up I would have to know them quite well to loan a bass to them. There is always the possibility that my bass could stop working in their hands, so I am reluctant to loan one out. I always carry a spare and so should they. On the other hand, I run a jam night and have a P bass copy for general use. It is quite a good bass and people who use it often tell me so. If I bring another bass and keep it for my own use I am not being tight as some infant said to me the other week. I am looking after almost a grand's worth of Jazz bass.
3. My take on her not doing the old hits is that she probably can't sing Wuthering heights anymore and also some of that stuff is so old that she probably doesn't feel like she's the same person now as the girl who recorded it. Plus, the complexity of repoducing some of her old stuff recorded using a Fairlight probably made it a non-starter, I too await a DVD.
4. For many years I pretended that you couldn't buy new strings unless they were on a new bass.
5. Bassist available for working band. Based in Bolton. 50-ish. Big repertoire 60's, 70's and so on. Glam rock a speciality. Gear vocals transport - reliable, quick learner. I have contacts with a decent agent. No metal or grunge etc! Thanks. www.ianedmundson.co.uk
6. If people out there have the money, I believe that a certain Birmingham area luthier (Jhno Brcih) still makes them.
7. That one takes some features from the 620 (my 620/12 below). The F-hole isn't very typical Ric. They usually go for a sharkfin design. The lower horn is 4003-ish. It looks very nice indeed.
8. I often video the odd song at a gig I've been to. I don't ever hold my camera up in the air blocking people's view (as that really pisses me off) and I don't spend the gig looking to see what I'm getting. I bought the official DVD that came out of this show.
9. In case anyone has been troubled by this topic, I ended up getting this one imported and it's a real honey. 10. Standard layout from mine. Screws on back of the bass looked all wrong. I think I have seen the 5 knob option before. That string was probably out of the nut to show fret wear or lack of it. 5 knob version from google search.. Get a load of that thick pickup near the bridge!
11. "and at least once a month during fall/winter. " That doesn't sound attractive.
12. Singer Wanted - Bolton Greater Manchester URGENT / MALPRACTICE - Line-up is vocals, gtr, bass, drms. Experienced players. Good set. Singer leaving due to ear problems. We aim to do a couple of shows a month - some on party circuit, some decent pubs. Good crowd-pleasing set. Have agent. Rehearse Bolton, set list good but not totally set in stone. We are open to new ideas. 60's to more recent. PA an advantage. More info on MALPRACTICE profile page on North West Bands site. Please message for callback + chat, or find us on FB. Thanks. 13. I own a RV5 R*c replica. The pickups are mighty and the neck is great. I have got the action where I want it. The only thing that is an issue with the bass is that the bar that goes over the TRC is hard to fasten down tight and alternative string restraint is needed.
14. Does anyone know any UK stockists of the backbreakers? Thanks.
15. Thinking of getting something along the lines of one of these. or one of these... Sadly can't run to one of these... I seriously considered this one which is on EBay cheap, but decided against it.
16.
The shop guy said he couldn't as a guy was about to play an acoustic set in the shop. So here we are in a holiday weekend with the city heaving with folk - a retailers paradise. But this shop chooses to be a venue in the middle of the afternoon.
I understand your frustration, but if they have an event about to start that quite a lot of people have turned up and filled up the shop to see, then the pedal try-out has to wait.
17. I've been to see an old band of mine where I remained friendly with them and got up for a couple of songs. That band (including myself) covered some gigs for my band of the time, when our drummer was seriously ill Another I did some gigs with 10 years later. Others I would cheerfully kill, especially if their singer happens to be an alcoholic idiot.
18. Volume on bass guitar set to max. Soundcheck bass against drums for correct amp volume level, then guitar added. Then vocals go into mix and singer tells everyone else to turn down. Pretend to turn down.
19. Under-rated... Bruce Thomas ex of Elvis Costello was certainly rated at the time, but has fallen out of the public eye now. I'd say the same for Colin Moulding of XTC - a total genius and innovator on bass, but XTC are gone now and he's largely forgotten outside of their fans. I miss them terribly. Nick Seymour of Crowded House was mentioned and he is a true jazz bassist in a pop band. His bass parts are little adventures for the ears - Fantastic syncopated little counter melodies that can't be second guessed, such as Don't dream it's over - try humming along with the bass part on that . I don't know how he gets some of the sounds he does - on Whispers and moans for example. I love his work on their albums up to Together Alone. After that they went a bit meh. Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick does some amazing stuff and gets little recognition except for starting the 12-string bass ball rolling. Jim Lea of Slade - a ridiculously good player, consigned to be remembered mainly as the one at the back on Merry Christmas everybody. A criminal underestimation.
