I love it. Most meaningful thread for me. Makes me work at composition and develop my writing chops.
I think its quite incredible , and almost feel like I am living the dream , well if you bear in mind that I am writing , performing (mostly), recording , producing and publishing my own compositions and songs , I would have killed for the opportunity 30 years ago , so now it is just fantastic. The fact I get a vote or two is icing on the cake but to think that some members think my entry is worth a vote over the other choices is both exciting and humbling in the same breath.
No the skills aren't difficult to learn, but they are difficult to master well. After years of being a dedicated home-recordist, I've pretty much given up because I've recently worked with people who are so much better than me at getting stuff sounding good in a fraction of the time it would take me to get far less satisfactory results. Also I'm a terrible singer and lyricist, so anything that wasn't purely instrumental would have to be done in collaboration with someone who is. I much prefer songs to instrumentals and I'm sure I'm not alone in this regard. To do something in the time frame allowed it's much easier if I do it all myself which means an instrumental only composition. As a voter I'm nearly always inclined to vote for a track with a decent vocal on it rather than an instrumental, so long as it meets the challenge brief.
I am with you on most of this , but I see it as a massive learning tool , when I don't get any better after a lot of effort , I may feel the same , but at the moment I keep finding things to improve on and these things are still fun , I am not producing commercially granted , but surely you having learnt what you have, gives you an insight to how you want the Terrortones to sound ?
I think that is part of the problem. The challenge is billed as composition, but it's just as much a recording one, which I think puts off people who don't have the facilities or skills to make a recording they believe can compete with what has been produced before.
most people on here have access to a computer or tablet that can host a digital audio workstation, the skills are not particularly difficult, but do need the will to want to learn
Just had a quick look, it'd take half hour to listen to them all, I'm not sure many people would have that kind of time.
aquick scan through as you were surfing through BC with headphones on , 20 seconds each if it doesnt grab move on , you night find something you like and could throw a vote at
Poor, poor people. What are they going to do?
not really necessary Nige , if Skol can't ask for honest opinions without getting piss taking responses then he is wasting his time . If people don't want to or can't participate or vote for ANY reason that is their perogative , if we can make the thing more inclusive all the better .
[Shameless Plug] You can play mine to Lurksalittle..! [/Shameless Plug] (... although she [s]may not[/s] probably won't like it, either... )
I did play her yours Douglas , it was great , half way through she ran off to go and do her homework , inspirational my friend
Voted! It was sooo close this month for me between Lurksalot and Old_Ben… and my vote went to Old_Ben (sorry Lurks!). Both really strong compositions to my ear, which I felt captured the image nicely - or at least chimed with my interpretation of it most strongly. Old_Ben just pipped it because his track was a hair’s breadth closer to my personal taste; and I really liked the ‘rawness’ of it (I’m not referring to the production itself, which is great, but more the choice of sounds that I felt worked well). Lurks’ track was also very catchy, nicely played/produced and I really like the contribution of Lurksalittle and her mate on backing vocals. A close second.
Cheers Paul , I still haven't chosen yet , but I particularly liked yours and old bens , yours has to be marked down because I cant play it to Lurksalittle Old Bens was how I envisaged mine going at the start , but it got a bit tuney , rather than grungey , and rather than pull it back in line I just went with the flow Thanks to everyone else for the kind words , now for a double check on my voting thoughts

Sonisphere cancelled : UK festivals and the future
lurksalot replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
small scale suits me much better, In Chester we have a few street type music festivals which work really well , and a couple of pubs put on outdoor afternoon/evening shows with any number of local bands , all free entry, drinks at normal bar prices , they are excellent , and while you don't get mahoosive high flying band names appearing , you dont need mahoosive TV screens to see the stage , so you can go home and watch the big name DVDs to get the full effect We do have Chester Rocks though , Chester Pops is more like it , but the kids love it , a decent introduction to a proper outdoor stage type 2 day festival , no camping and the like though. -
Like a truncated version of this? I don't quite dare, yet...
LOL , I had a good chuckle at 57s , he takes the horn from his mouth and gives it a dirty look like it wasn't working correctly and made the wrong noise

Ive had a listen through , and just as I think I have taken a step forward , everyone else appears to have taken two or three !! its a good job I am not desperate for a new polo shirt
-
i am in , this one took loads of work and about 40 vocal takes from me , none of which actually got to the final cut , It is incredibly difficult to learn , and a real effort to try , much cudos to those that can Lucky for everyone our bands singer popped in for a coffee and took 2 takes to lay this down , never having heard it before yesterday , talent way beyond my dreams. So I offer you....Riot Bunny https://soundcloud.com/lurksalot/riot-bunny I hope you like it
current status: unlistenably cacophonous. I mean, I want it to be dirty but I have no idea how you all make your tracks sound so legit.
I cant speak for myself as I am but a novice , but I am learning that the quality of what you record matters , loads of distortion doesn't often hide much , and even then to make it fit you might have to use only a certain frequency range of it by using the EQ to give each part musical seperation , that said, wait till you hear my effort , you will no doubt wonder if I actually listen to what I am saying out loud
I've done guide tracks of all my instruments but finding time to get down decent takes is very difficult!
I feel your pain there , but it only takes more time to get it right and that is practice , and it has done my playing no harm at all , at first it does seem quite pressured to get a good take , but the concentration when put towards the creative works better than when worrying about the negative , just do it again ....and again in my case , I think I would fall to bits in a proper studio with ......people there and everything . Still , I recorded our gig on Saturday , and some songs haven't got any (audible ) mistakes by me . in a gig the moment is gone and no-one is really judging , in a studio it feels a different ballgame altogether to me . I have got some BVs now by Lurksalittle and her friend , just waiting for a real singist to do the rest of it now
Was going to ask if anyone wanted to drop something down on mine when it's nearer completion!

well , as I have a competitive streak there Ben , I'll do it for you

Oh no he won't, he'll just 'con' Lurksalittle to do it for him..!
Oh no , she can sing , if Bens composition is half decent I figure my singing on it should bring it down a peg or two
-
well , as I have a competitive streak there Ben , I'll do it for you
-
Ah , now sound proofing and room treatments are not quite the same thing
-
this months comp is doing well , mine is pretty much done , maybe some tweaking , and by tweaking, I mean I am desperately trying to get anyone I know who has got a half decent voice to replace my sad efforts at delivering a lyric , I am not in panic mode yet , quite , and I have laid a vocal down , but I still have a a week and a bit to replace it Lurksalittle has ducked out of this one as she thinks I am being silly , but I reckon I can persuade her mates to do a few harmonies as they still think the whole recording thing is cool
-
Different rooms have varying acoustic properties and will reflect different frequencies of sound and bounce them around the room, these reflections will, at some point reach your ear , and these 'stray' sounds will colour or interfere with the pure sound you should be hearing , even differing positions in the room will give differing effects. In most circumstances I don't reckon it to be a massive issue unless you are really keen or a pro , but you only have to walk around the house and shout 'echo' in every room an listen to the difference in the sound reflection coming back at you, and that effect may affect each frequency band differently .
-
Have a good one buddy , I will listen in when mine is nearer done
-
I am no expert and probably should investigate this if it is an issue , but all my stuff is on my PC on the same drive

Burt Reynolds , someone stole his cigar as I recall Your good lady has chosen a good one for me (I hope ) I just showed Lurksalittle the pic and she said Nirvana , so a bit if guitarish/ rockish/ grungeish noises might work for me , though I so reserve the right to miss that description by a long way

Well done Paul excellent piece and well deserved win. I have no need to get a winners speech prepared just yet , but as a runner up I would like to thank ...........
I have the b2.1 but never got it to work properly on windows 7 64. I now have a windows 8 laptop so maybe I should try again
I spent a lot of time trying to make my zoom kit ( b2.1 and the 9.1) work as an interface , it does , BUT , volume levels , playback levels and latency issues made it a real PITA , get the proper kit , it will make the whole process much , much easier and straightforward.
I only ever have my amp in a straight line from the mains, I find the electrons having to slow down to get round bends or corners in the mains lead affects my tone!
A very important observation , you have to be very careful especially with the likes of extension leads that are coiled up , make sure they are unwound all the way, as otherwise with the cable cores , 1 core will have further to travel around the outside of the loop, and the negative electricity will arrive before the positive electricity (or vice versa) . This will mean that your phase is the wrong way round and your speaker stack will thus act as a giant microphone.
