I'd use it to put towards an even more expensive boutique bass, £5K would just about cover the deposit of what I'd really like to buy, lol. Horses for courses eh
Jeeeez Barrie.. forget this thread..what you Gassin for? most of your boutique basses, are not that flashy, but very expensive.. i always loved that Louis J bass you had.. i can only think of 2 bass companies that may have a deposit of that sort of money..Alembic and Fodera... i dont think your an Alembic man, so im guessing Fodera... i bet my pants on its a Fodera.. you should really branch out and try a Sukop or STR.. and let me know how the Sukop went...

Fender
don't buy one? Edit - that was a bit terse. Fender Custom shop basses are really a different thing. I've played 1000's of Fenders, and there are more good than bad. Recently i've owned 4 Jap Fenders, 2 Mexi Classic series and 1 USA Vintage Reissue. And they were all great, i've just settled on a Custom Shop Jazz, and got rid of pretty much everything else. The other bass is a 28 year old Squier. And that's ace too. edit 2 - still makes no sense. Fender Japan and Fender Corona don't use the same lumber yard for theit woods, etc etc. The vast majority of Fender Japan stuff comes without a gigbag, let alone a nice ABS Moulded case. There are more reasons than are worth going into, but you know, find a bass you like within your budget, and if it's made on the moon, what does it matter?
ive not played as many as you And, but ive had a few..one being poss custom shops best, and there wasnt that much difference between that bass and the MIJ 62 i had, or the US 75 RI..in fact the 62 was better IMO than the US, when you think of the price difference..... it really is a mixed bag and a nightmare for a buyer who doesnt have the experience, that maybe others have.. there is no doubt in my mind that my scratch, would be laid down on the best mass pro Fenders in the world, its an MIJ any day.. and for less than half the price.... im stickin my neck out and saying Japanese masters would build a better custom shop bass than an American custom shop build.. i just think there mass pro work ethic is way beyond most in the world... i was bowled over when i played Julian Crampton's MIJ jazz..it was smokin... cost him £670......Custom Shop.. £2500 at least.
3. i always wanted to be a bass player.. never really wanted to play anything else, since i lost my passion in fine art.. i think maybe the style of music i was into, conditioned me to think that bass wasnt really seen as a backing instrument..i found it very attractive as this wonderful sound that could do the drums and harmony.. i thought the sky was the limit, as far as bass and rythm was concerned.. i didnt know any bassists at the time.. i was listening to Shakatak, Incognito, Benson... but had no idea who was playing.. i just knew it sounded amazing.. the first bassist i was aware of was Randy Taylor.. i had never heard groove like it.. alot are good but not quite like Randy to this day.. anyway i think Bass has always been cool..like the guy i didnt know who sat in the corner all moody, but when it came down to it, said something really cool now and again....a bit like what i think of the best players play.. bass has always been cool imo
4. Im sure many know this band..if not, this track is well worth a listen.. the first time i heard this was with a few musicians i know who are maybe different to me in there passions.. or what i thought!!!.. this was 17 years ago before i was playing and i was a percussionist for these guys... they played this to me and i was blown away... from what i thought i knew about this band, and what i really know now is very different... this track is so great, from what i think is one of the best 70's rock albums.. its a chameleon of a track... 70's rock to 70' funk into 70's jazz funk.. its festival of a tune.. i frickin love it... i was laughing when i heard it because i was so amazed how cool it was and where it took me.. it made things possible, in my preconseptions of what i thought 70's rock was..this track taught me alot check it... 5. its a harsh world out there..
6. Without wanting to sound confrontational, there seems to be a few BCers that only buy and sell basses on BC, with no involvement in any other aspect of the site.. where is the line drawn between a casual seller and and trader of instruments? i was under the impression that commercial sales were not allowed on BC.. if so what does this involve, and what are the limitations on such transactions?
7. you can get such an incredible instrument for way sub £1000.. ive learned to mod/set up a bass over the years.. it was learned from Bass Chat really..then experimenting, and knowing what you like... of course the knowledge costs alot of money in the end..
8. Im getting into my 11th year of playing bass.. ive had a few boutique-ish basses.. i adored the Sei i had.. but i really cant see me playing a bass with a sexy wood top now.. im talking spaltedmapleburlishroseofthemountain... im getting more and more interested in cheaper basses and what i can do with them mod wise and musically...my SR5 is the bomb..ok its a little flashy but nothing brash.. not expensive but is possibly the best 5 on the planet.. im not knocking the boutique basses but personally, and this is just me, i would feel like a posh kid who has spent too much money.. if i had £5000 to spend on only bass..., i would prob buy basses under £1000, and mod them to my liking.. i feel i have enough knowledge to mod a bass that could keep up with any £2000 + instrument.. but lets face it, most can its just personal...
9. Wowzer.. now thats a Ken Smith.. gotta be a bad boy tone wise.... this should be in Porn section...

Jazz
My lovely, lovely '71...
Iconic, perfect.. just love this bass...just doesnt get any better...
11. whats the point..who you gonna sell em to?
12. i would still play one.. what are the tones you can get from these basses...?
13.
What are the differences between this and a £600 Fender?
Not alot IMO.. certainly not £1700 worth.. not even close.. ive had a £3000 Fender and an £600 MIJ 62 Jazz really wasnt that different.. still a cracking 60's CS though
14. i think the proper guitarists step back and understand the bass, and approach it accordingly..like any good musician should with any instrument IMHO.. ive seen a few great guitarists, play my basses and they were really good..no flash, just great harmonic fingerstyle ability.. others just started tapping.. he couldnt really hold down a groove.. i cant blame him, it just wasnt what he was used to...
15. Had Mr Bensons music on today after a long while the first music i ever heard was from this man..i think it was Last Train to Clarksville if i recall.. i remember being blown away and mesmerised by his playing and the rythm of this track, at the age of about nine i think... the solo work is astounding.... i always remember hearing how the hardcore jazz crowd were in dismay, when he wanted make a bit more of a crust, and go a little more commercial..abet still playing with Earl Klugh and others... i personally think he made some of the best soul pop records ever made... He is such a humble man, who shows his appreciation to who he thinks influenced him and a love of musicians he learns from today... now thats a musician..IMO i went to see Incognito in London about 8/9 years ago and the special guest was George Benson... that was a great night.. This is a great interview.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAwxZ0Bp5hE Last train to Clarksville http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUyj7B4wFoo just a fantastic track.... with Earl Klugh..im sure its Mr Miller on bass..i just love this sort american jazz soul.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUPHZsLGtXw The best lesser known stuff like C Smooth and others dont come up on YT...?? This is such a wonderful track and what a live vid...!!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi3EtuDxUf4 end of waffle..
16.
It's ridiculous isn't it! Conversely, I walked into a shop a few years ago and asked to try a late 80's Stingray (2 Band EQ, it would have been a steal if I'd bought it for the price and to this day I still kick myself for not buying it, hands down the best Ray I've ever played). Anyway, the shop assistant picked it up and did the same thing you described, and threw me a load of slap/tap licks no doubt in an effort to impress me. Once I finally got to play the bass, he had half an ear on what I was doing and after a while he started to pick different basses off the wall to see if I liked them, including on fretless bass with a brass fretless board which was one of the weirdest basses I've ever played. Well we sat and talked for ages until the store closed, he was really a lovely guy and obviously just very enthusiastic about my playing as well. Those are the kind of people I like, he literally had me play every bass in the store!
good story Ris..i should add ive had some wonderful shop experiences..I went into Guitar Guitar in Newcastle and the guy was, retail wise. at the top of his game.. LEt me look around, after a few minutes came over and asked if i wanted to try anything, to let him know, and he would plug it in for me.. i said i prob wasnt going to buy... no problem he said.. and asked if i wanted a coffee!!! yes, he asked me if i wanted a coffee.. thats unheard of!!! then again i bet Pete would make me a coffee.. i asked to plug in a bass..he came straight over and set it up..Brought me over a stool and said enjoy the bass..i tried a few basses... we had a chat for ten minutes at the end.. i then left.. it doesnt get any better than that... PERFECT!!!
17. Anyone know a good online bass tutorial i can recommend to someone.. From beginner to advanced with vids ..(or at least with sound samples)....Has to be pretty comprehensive.. and step by step that can be slowly worked through.. ive seen a few on you tube but its always a nightmare trying to find them all and there not very well laid out..unless someone knows of a good one, thats easy to follow..
18.
I'd go with the pickups first. I dropped in a set of DiMarzio Ultra Jazz and they made a huge difference-especially with a series/parallel switch. If you want more, maybe try an outboard pre amp.
I agree with Doddy..theres no point in having a great pre if it cant be voiced well
19.
why didn't you stop him and say you wanted to try it out ?
although i thought he was a bit of a tit, i didnt want him to feel sh*t if i acted negatively towards him... i think i smiled at the end and said something like 'great'..how two faced am i!!!! i could have said something to put him off doing this sort of thing again but i swear to you, i cant bare making people feel crap.. i feel horrible after.
20. I was in a music shop, big in music retail recently... i was working but was on my lunch.. went in, asked to plug in a Sadowsky.. the guy said sure.. while i was looking at the other basses,he had plugged it in..and proceeded to show me his skills/chops etc.. he threw everything at me, slapping, tapping, etc.. and to the rest of the shop.. i wouldnt have cared if he could play like Wooten, i just wanted to try this bass out.. i just couldnt get my head around why this guy was playing this bass to me?.. you can imagine what i thought... If i wanted to buy some shoes, would he have tried them on first and danced for me? i can imaging this was a minature version of what Clarky and others, went through at the Guitar Show.. hundreds of guys like him... why cant people be more humble???? EOR...
21.
Haha, they used to be yours! This bass used to be mine, what an amazing bass, particularly with the Nordstrands.
HA HA no way!! great to see em traveling around and making basses happy!!
22.
And the fact that he's Stuart Zender! Figure your own sound and style out, thats the real fun Si
Couldnt agree more.. its great when you hear a tone you like but its much better to forge your own personality...
23. Thanks.. as youve suggested, i think i will try and fabricate some for myself.. cant be very hard...
