6.
Hi all, thanks for the comments - and wow on the forensics - I'm stunned! I'm playing a wedding tonight and in a major rush to get over there. I'll respond properly tomorrow - my impression is that the dots are 'between' the lines as for a standard fretted. I think Denis was aiming for the Jaco idea - a bass built in the early '60s with the frets removed (I'm not sure however). Martin Peterson also found the dots to be 'between' not 'on' the line and intonated the bass with this in mind. I managed to get some black felt washers yesterday and will fit them over the lacquer cracks tomorrow and take some further photographs (I'm not sure what it will look like but we'll all see soon - the idea was suggested by a local luthier). Cheers all, Lozbass
It should be easy enough to tell with the bass in person: the octave double dot would be very close to 17 inches from the nut. If it's not, then I am wrong.
 7.
Thanks Dave, you're clearly a serious forensic bass investigator OK, there certainly was return of gas but, all things considered, I've got my fretless Jazz situation sorted and I really can't imagine getting a better tone from any other instrument (although I have to say that one very tempting aspect of Loz's bass over mine is the ebony board). What I really want to get sorted is my fretless Precision situation, I have a lovely old instrument but I find the P-PUP alone doesn't quite do it live so I'm looking for a P-J fretless, like your TF Dave (and you'll no doubt remember we had a few chats about that a while back). So, I find myself drawn, and not for the first time, to Shaggy's '73.... If I had bottomless pockets, Loz's bass would be in my collection for sure, myself and Loz have chatted about it a few times and each time I really have to say "you don't need it". However, someone here will get a real bargain and a cracking bass Chris
Well, if there is such a job as 'serious forensic bass investigator' I think I'd quite like it but I may have been talking rubbish. With the Tony Franklin the ability to add a little Jazz bridge pickup now and then certainly can help with cutting through the mix and I'd say the ebony fingerboard does give the P sound a slight crispness compared to rosewood. However, the real killer bonus with the TF is (IMO) the side dot at the 'first fret'. This Jazz bass has got to be a real bargain at the price - wherever the side dots are, although if they are 'between' and not 'on the lines' I don't really see the point of them. A bad clue is as bad as no clue at all.
Just noticed "markers as for fretted" which is a relief as I can now stop gassing Incredible price for the bass, so it won't be around long Chris

Sorry if this gasses you up again Chris but in the third pic top row I'd say the side dot looks to be nearer the correct place for G and not somewhere between F# and G. But maybe my eyes are playing up.
I measured the distance from the nut to the first side dot in that picture relative to the measurement between the tuner shafts in the pic and compared it to the the same relative measurement on my Jazz bass. IMHO, the dot definitely marks the third 'fret' and is not where the dot would be on a fretted instrument. 'Markers as for fretted' must mean side dots at 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19 but 'on the line' and not 'between the lines' as they would be on a fretted instrument. Is this good sense or am I fooling myself?
 9. On the 10 Downing Street website here's the petition started by Jon McClure of Reverend and the Makers.
 10. I've had a Hofner Artist 185 (30"), an Aria TSB-550 (32"), and a Dearmond Starfire with Dark Stars (30"). I miss them all. I'd like a Mustang. Maybe one day.
 11.
Think i've said before that buying a box of 9v batteries is false economy, guitarists circle round em like vultures and you end up losing half of them!
So I'm at a gig and we're about to start the second set when guitarist discovers that he needs a new battery. I am playing only passive basses and my compressor, mixer/preamp, and tuner are all running from a mains power supply. Guess who is the only one carrying spare batteries.
 12.
I have to swap basses, I play fretless on one, sometimes two songs in our set (origanils, so 8/9 song set) I have to move quick to make it happen, biggest problem I have is getting the sound on my amp to suit fretless, the output of the Bart pre in my Sei is much higher than my Pedulla, I just got a Boss LS-2 to make the change easier. Maybe looking at making the chnage happen quicker like I have done is an option? Good luck finding a solution T
+1 on this solution. How long does it take to swap basses? Get a Radial Bassbone (£150ish s/h) and set the eq and level for the two basses so your happy then just kick the button to switch between them.
 13. Now sold to Lee650. Apologies to those who made offers but were beaten to it in the end. Thanks to all who took an interest including the two previous owners Martthebass and Ray.

 15.
Dave, you have to be kidding me, right? I loved your posts - no worries at all, mate. Keep up the banter. As to the numbers thing, I love 'em. It's what I do for a living. But I'm well aware that they're a turn-off for most people.
Well, half kidding half not - just in case.
 16.
I have solved the weight problem with regards to bass playing and now never feel any aches or pains. I simply strap it to my manservant and tell him which notes to play, After a marathon 4 hour jam session I feel fresh as a daisy.
I expect the old manservant gives you a bit of rubdown too if you do need freshening up.
 17. I'd like to apologise to the OP for not taking him seriously enough. Sorry Happy Jack. I couldn't follow your spreadsheet stuff but I take the point that there comes a point where the weight is more than can be taken, like the straw that breaks the camel's back.
I live an hour from bighton so GAK is always an option (they're great there as far as I can tell!).

Whereas I have found them to be ageist the other way... Not always, but more often than not.
I have had both good and bad experiences with GAK but mostly good. I have been aware of a kind of 'you're too old' embarrassment from some staff but I'd say it's rare. The stupidest thing that happened to me there was walking into the acoustics section with £400 cash in my pocket and a plan to buy an ABG and leaving again without trying anything because the guy couldn't be bothered to stop playing his computer game. I bought one on ebay instead. I would say generally good service in GAK and I only ever had one problem in the bass section and Mark in basses has helped me out on several occasions.

 20. Will someone please please buy this so I don't have to keep thinking about how I would explain to Mrs Tension its sudden appearance in our living room. Please.
 21. It's a good job I've already got WoT's Tony Franklin or I'd have to buy this.
 22.
while i was reading all this i got brain hurt
That will be because your brain is too heavy on your shoulders. I do have a cure if you're interested.
 23.
Sliced off the neck?
No, sliced of the neck AND the body. Now the bass is so light it's unbearable.
 24. Body front: You can just about see the scratches here, near top corner of pickguard and parallel with the fretlines:
