Not a bass but I bought a Danelectro U2 guitar and it was shipped in a gig bag. Not only did it arrive intact, it arrived in tune!

That's nowhere near as bad as some of you are making out. I [i]almost[/i] like it.

Absolute best way is with something like a Halifax Clarity Card. It's designed for foreign currency transactions. No commission, no fees, best exchange rate going. Pay it off at the end of the month and you pay nothing extra at all.

Another forum I'm on has done this for lots of different topics - footballers, films, etc. One person does all the legwork. They define a set number of nominees (e.g 20 per person). Everyone then sends the organiser their list of 20 nominees via PM, in strict order (unordered lists are thrown out). There needs to be a strict deadline. If you nominate someone as your number 1 bass player they score 20 points, number 2 scores 19 points, and so on. Once all votes are received the organiser sums up the weighted votes and produces the list. Ties are broken by some predetermined mechanism, e.g most number one nominations or how many people nominated them. On the other forum they release it in reverse order, normally with a brief writeup of each entry (for bass players this would be a brief bio and maybe a seminal recording). They release one or two list entrants at a time to allow for discussion and have a bit of build up. It works best if people try not to have to much discussion before submitting their list, otherwise people start to influence each others choices. Probably easier to get separate instrument insurance from a specialist. The usual names are New Moon and Allianz and depending on your requirements joining the MU.

I was going to get the P bass but the fact it was a "b stock" deko put me off. If it's been returned by someone (makes it b stock) then I'd be worried it was genuinely unplayable.

One of the reasons I got rid of my DHA pedal was because I got fed up of explaining to sound guys it wasn't going to damage their kit. They all thought it was some homebrew thing I'd chucked together. Great gear, but Dave could really do with sorting out the aesthetics.

I've got two Neotech straps, wouldn't consider buying any other straps now.

The main reason to get a 5 string is so that you have more notes available without shifting position, not for the extra five notes. For example if you're playing the D on the 10th fret of the E string then you have easy access to two different fifths: a higher one at the 12th fret on the A string or a lower one at the 10th fret on the B string. Having both these notes available in a single position means you have a lot more possibilities. Personally, I don't need that extra flexibility so I stick with four strings. Other people feel differently. There's no right or wrong, really. Lots of people get very heated about this but its just down to personal preference and need.

For bass I don't need anywhere near £700 worth---tuner, OD, maybe a synth occasionally. For guitar I'd get a tuner, a jumbo tonebender, a RAT, a lighter OD, and blow the rest on an outrageously awesome tremolo pedal. Perhaps two---one for the stutter sounds and another for the amp-like stuff.

Flute is my first instrument and I used to play a lot of jazz on it so my sight reading (on treble clef) and music theory is really good. My problem is that I've never bothered to learn bass clef, and I've never played bass in a band that required me to read. So from a bass point of view my reading is awful.
