A few factors at play I think. For one, not all cabinets are the same. A 1x10" can outperform a 2x10" if it has more than twice the sensitivity, or the excursion. Second is tone. I know when I play my stingray fingerstyle and aim for a fat, studio sound then I'm going to need more amp then when I'm playing grindy punk with a precision and a pick.
Don't worry about the 1st part, it's highly unlikely to get done & if it was, I'd be getting help from someone who knows what they're doing.
Pleased to hear it, asking for trouble IMO.
The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'm thinking DI box with a preamp (such as a sansamp) between the bass & amp. This way I can use it with or without the rig. Both options are on the table still.
Good choice! Lots of tube amp ish ones from the Behringer BDI to the Two Notes Le Bass.

Two things I think here. Firstly, and mainly. Please, don't DIY something like this. In terms of disasters, you've got everything from it breaking on you mid song, through damaging your amp, right the way up to death and everything in between. Secondly, I think you may be confusing active and passive DI boxes with speaker and intrstrument level DI boxes. DI boxes can be instrument level, line level, speaker level or more than one of those. And any of these types of DI box can be active (requires electricity to work) or passive (doesn't).
I had no idea there were restrictions on sending magnetic materials. I looked it up when I got home and the rule is 'Magnetised material Magnetised material with a magnetic field strength of 0.418A/m or more at a distance of 4.6m from the outside of the package is prohibited' I' m guessing the pickups are no where near strong enough to be banned, but I don't where to start with measuring magnetism or what equipment you'd need to do it.
Metal?

There are a few DIs that offer that feature, my favourite (and tbh, the only one I'd trust to actually take a speaker load) is the Countryman Type 85. With that being said, they range in price all the way from Millenium to Suhr. Just be aware that most (all?) valve amps need a load to work, so if the DI box doesn't have a load then you will still need a cabinet. Some (the Suhr is one) present a dummy load, so you can run your amp without a cabinet.

May I recommend the Proel ones? The Force ones which are a cool blue/grey twill finish. I have a 3U for my bass rig and we liked it so much we got another for our new mixer.

@SmoothHoundChris, are the antenna replaceable at all? I have the need to mount the receiver in the back of my rack, and the signal is rubbish back there. Is it possible to get any kind of antenna extender? -
Defintely check out the classifieds on here if you can. We're all an honest bunch and I'm sure any seller would answer your questions honestly. There's a TC combo for sale in the classifieds now, or there was that Genz rig (a 2x10" combo and 2x10" cab) from a while back that would see you through any gig.
My amp is run through the PA ... The amp is mainly going to be a monitor for me to hear myself on stage.
If that really is true 100% of the time then pretty much any decent combo would be just fine. I wouldn't worry quite so much.

Thanks! Quite excited to get one of these actually, it'll be my first Sansamp. I know the unit is already done and I know it was done for Geddy not me, but I realyl can't help thinking that one (or two, if you wanted trs and xlr) more outputs on the back for a 'blend' output would have been such a useful feature. Or even a switch the does what the jumper will on the back of the unit. Edit- Just seen this which claims to combine 2 line level signals.

Subbed, liking the idea of this. I do have a few questions for Tech 21 if you can answer them, thanks for all of your information so far! What's the output voltage? I'd be looking to pair it with a QSC that ideally wants 1.1V How much of a chew on is setting the internal jumper?

Thought as much. I'm looking at moving to a pedal board centred around the GK as my rig and then a FR800 for the odd time I need backline. Would be really curious to see how it works out for you.

I have been doing a lot of research into the GK Plex. The 1/4" on that is balanced and really hot for driving their powered cabinets. Might be worth a look? Is this for a FR800?

[s]MBF: £450[/s] SOLD [s]MBE: £220 SOLD[/s] [s]MB500: £300[/s] SOLD Hello all! So, I'm admittedly a little bit of a GK fanboy. However I've recently been using my pedalboard to go straight to the desk as my band have stopped using backline. So I'm selling off some of my amp collection... to fund a GK Plex preamp! Both the MBF and the MBE are in mint condition, the MB500 has a shinier, flimsier coating though and so is showing some scratches. All of these amps work flawlessly though. I have the footswitch and cable for the MBF (I bought that one new) but not for the MB500 as I purchased it used and the seller didn't have them. Prices include UK postage, but if you want to collect or trial I'm about ten minutes north of Newcastle. I'm also happy to meet up or deliver within a reasonable distance. Cash is king, but I will accept trades, please feel free to PM me with offers. I am however particularly looking for a GK Plex, a nice powered wedge and an EUB. EDIT - The photos below are uploading badly for some reason, my photobucket is here with the same pictures at a higher resolution. Thanks! Jack
If you want to get the maximum out of your current computer try the following: 1. Make sure you aren't running any applications other than your DAW program. 2. Turn off Bluetooth and WiFi 3. Unplug any USB peripherals that aren't actually being used for making music. For a laptop that should be everything except your audio interface, and external audio drive if you are using one (you really should be). 4. If you are feeling really brave make sure you are complete disconnected from the internet and turn off your anti-virus programs. Don't forget to turn them back on when before you reconnect! Does your version of Cubase have meters for showing the amount of processor and disk usage while it is running? These can be invaluable in tracking down performance bottlenecks. IME the biggest performance boost you can give a laptop is to replace the system drive with an SSD, and then buy a big fast external USB 2 or 3 drive to store all your audio files on.

Do you absolutely need the portability of a Laptop? IME for the same price as you would pay for a laptop you can get a desktop machine and a 24" monitor with far more performance and power. You also get a lot more options for audio interfaces if you are not just relying on the USB ports a laptop has. Having said all that unless you are intending to go out a buy a couple of huge orchestral libraries and run 50+ tracks of that with multiple instance of convolution reverb plug-ins, anything with an i5 processor, SSD drive, and at least 16GB of RAM should do.
I know that plenty of people run music production software in laptops (even mid specced laptops) just fine but if you're wanting the best bang for buck then joining the pc master race is the way forward. When I think about how little I spent on my pc and what that would (or wouldn't) have bought me in a laptop it's unbelievable. I'm much more of a pc nerd than I am a bass nerd, but there's no replacement for horsepower if you're trying to record anything at all complicated. If you really, really need a laptop then some of Dell#s offerings (I have a Latitude 7420 for work) are brilliant. But considering you need a some (albeit not THAT much) processing power, lots of memory and hard disk space, desktops are the way forward. Difficult to get a ssd scratch disk and then a 4tb storage disk in a laptop. TL:DR - Dell Latitude! But ideally a PC if you don't need the portability.
