1. Hey folks, Bought some pedals, messed around for a bit and then bought one of those Zooms that were on special. Both of these pedals are boxed and as new. Actually, AS new doesn't cover it, they ARE new and have literally been played for maybe 45 mins each in the house. Dr. J Sparrow: £50 Up for sale is a Dr. J Sparrow pedal. It's basically a sansamp clone that I bought it to get the 'sansamp sound' then decided that it wasn't for me. I have played real sansamps in the past and can confirm that this is pretty much spot on, I'm just not a fan of this whole tube amp in a box type thing. These are on ebay for £80+, and as I've said mine is boxed and brand new. Biyang Baby Boom CO-10 £40 (including postage) Next is the compressor I bought. At first I had some noise issues with it, but when I tried an isolated power supply and then a battery it all works brilliantly. Just seems I don't really know how an effect pedal compressor works compared to a studio or PA one. I was using it to level out dynamics but it has loads of squash, can definitely an 'effect' comp rather than a subtle one if you'd like. I'd actually be keeping this if it wasn't for the Zoom. As it's an unknown I have posted links to some reviews beneath the pictures. 2. There's a certain 'oomph' that is neither volume nor sound quality that you only get from a big rig, but is a 2x10 + 1x15 really that big? Bet you'd love two good 1x12s and micro head. Of course, casters are cheaper.
3. Arrived this morning, spent until now messing around with it. As with all of these types of untits that I've used so far all of the built in patches are flashy and show-offy. They do sound nice and they certainly show of what the unit can do. I'm really liking some of the amp models/flavours through headphones but the 4 seperate swithes are what makes it really cool, rather than changing the patches you can turn on/off the compressor, preamp, and 2 modulation sections. This I really like, and makes the unit operate more like a proper, manual pedalboard. I am finding some of the patches quite noisy but this is through my mixer and headphones, I imagine this will disappear through an amp. There is more than sound quality to think about though. The sheer number of inputs and outputs is staggering and useful. The tuner is brilliant and the whole thing is very solidly built. Good so far. And I think anyone nitpiking needs to think about the price. Where I am, this thing is cheaper than some pedalboards. As in, pieces of wood with some velcro on top.
4.
and an SFX MicroThumpinator.
Did you notice the option of using the sub bass control as a -12dB HPF at various frequencies from 50Hz up? I'm hoping it will work well enough that I won't need one of fdeck's HPFs or a Thumpinator.

6. So I'm considering one as a 'sound like me' solution for when I'm not using my amp. I've just put a board together with a boost, comp, od, tuner and preamp all of good quality but it's big, heavy and just feels like overkill. What are the 'normal' effects like on the Zoom such as the overdrive and compressor? I don't really ever see a use for the multiple voice filters or even much of the amp/cab modelling. What I'm more interested in is the sound quality, noise levels of the outputs and the like. For instance, how good is the tuner? I'm close to biting, I'm just worried that I'll play about with it for an hour at home, think it's really shiny and cool and then never use it again. And even at £99 it's too expensive for that. Any advice people could give would be fantastic.
7. A big one, those are powerful heads. 2 of the 2x12 neos sounds good.
8. I have a Green Mile and a Pure Boost, been using them for a few weeks and they're both on my board. The Pure Boost I love and so does everyone who's heard and used it. Really, really simple volume boost with basic tone controls. I've been using it to level out volume between pick and fingers live and for that it works brilliantly, my guitarist has ordered one as a volume boost for solos, he's been using a Behringer EQ set flat but with a volume boost as a stopgap whilst he looked at boosts, now he wants the Mooer. Went home for xmas, my dad tried it in front of his Ampeg combo which is a tiny, simple, one-channel affair and loved it for getting the amp to overdrive at sensible volumes. As a side note, I wish I could gig with a 15W, 12" combo amp.......... The Green Mile, well I'm undecided. It's a nice overdrive, but doesn't quite have the valve warmth I like. We shall see. It's just as beautifully made, low noise etc etc as the boost so this isn't a bad review, I'm just not partial to it myself. Lamborghini's are really nice cars I'm sure, but I wouldn't have one no matter how much money I had. Is anyone else finding the 'warm' mode to be hotter than the 'hot' mode?
9. Am I the only one unhappy with the introduction of the EBMM budget ranges? People always assume mine are the cheap ones now, especially as the names are so confusing. I liked that EBMM used to be exclusive.
10.
What you seemed to be saying was that being a mere bassist makes your opinion less valid than those working in the "industry". That's what Bill Fitzmaurice seemed to be saying.
On this topic, yes. I'm a stockman and so I'd expect that I know more about certain animals than you. Whatever you do professionally you're probably better at and more knowledgeable than me. As another example, I'm a pretty highly qualified first aider and emergency medic as part of my job so maybe I know more about that than you do, unless you're a nurse, doctor, paramedic or otherwise more highly trained than me, in which case not. If we were discussing which amp was best for metal in small pubs, which is a subjective and opinionated subject I'd think pretty much everyone was welcome, but I'd give more credence to the opinions of those who were playing in metal bands in small pubs and who'd used a variety of amps. What would a jazz bassist who's never left his bedroom know? For that matter what would a classically trained pianist know? Or a race car driver? Why is listening to a veteran professional (who you'd rightly or wrongly assume to be somewhat of an expert) a bad thing? PS - I can't speak for BFM, maybe he wasn't saying that. EDIT - And PPS, I most certainly am not an expert or a professional on the subject of speakers or their breaking in. It's something I hear but it may or may not be psychosomatic for all I know. When I say 'what do bassists necessarily know?', I include myself (as ever) in the less-knowledgable camp.
11.
You'd be surprised how many speaker designers play bass. Have you heard of Laurie Fincham?
Oh I fully expect that many speaker designers play bass. My point was that not many bassists are speaker designers.
12. Be honest, was it the fact that you heard the stack carrying the whole room, sounding full and thick and then realised I hadn't even plugged the Compact in?
13.
Can't have mere bassists chiming in on a bass forum now, can we?
What do bassists necessarily know about speaker mechanics?
14. As an alternative to all of these great suggestions, I would recommend a small mixer. You can plug an external source in from your pc to play along with and it's useful in all sorts of other situations besides just practicing with headphones.
15. Hey Mariner, unfortunately yes. With every permutation of cable, power source and position it still sounds like ass. I can't really tell if it's broken or crappy at this point.
16. Sorry, I wasn't that clear reading it back. The interference only happens when the compressor is switched on, the booster seems pretty immaterial if it's on or off. I have used compressors before, but never sole pedals. I've had a few multi-effects units I've not stuck with, onboard comps on amps and plenty in the studio but it's my first bass specific, effect pedal compressor. Hence the cheaping out! The cables are all new ones that I bought along with the effects so it could be one of those, good shout and I'll check later this evening. I tried it with a Stingray though, humbucker.
17. Hey folks, I bought some of the Mooer half price pedals recently and also picked up a budget compressor, seeing as it was also half price. Problem is, when the compressor is turned on it is awfully prone to picking up electrical interference. I can hear noises from my phone, voices from what I assume are radio transmissions and a pulsing hum. I know this pedal is cheap and I can expect it to be built as such but I have seen the biyang comps getting favorable reviews, they are even recommended to an extent by that massive compressor website database. Because of this, I don't believe the problem is endemic to the model and is probably either something broken or something I am doing wrong, can anyone help? It's on a board second only after a Mooer Pure Boost, the effect only happens when the pedal is switched on and is intermittent. Would an isolated power supply be preferable to the daisy chain it's on now? Battery? I'm going to check these things and see if anything is obviously loose or broken when I get home tonight but if you guys could save me some time and frustration that would be great.
18. The point has already been made but I agree that there are just too many Rays on the market. For a 'proper' bass, it's actually fairly cheap and so there are loads of people buying new which means there are loads of people selling second hand afterwards.
19.
I usually find that the scratchier/middier it sounds on its own, the better it will be in the mix. Whereas when I`ve got a great bassy sound on it`s own, it just sludges in the mix, being all wallowy.
Could we get this on a t-shirt or something?
20. Pretty much any mods devalue an instrument. My P has a DiMarzio Will Power pup that suits my playing and sound. But most people wouldn't like it, it can't suit everyone. The original will go back in if I ever sell. Mind you, it's been 10 years.
21. Booooooooo! Amps wear out and get outdated. You dream bass won't!
22. Meh, different strokes I suppose. I'd have taken the 'better' girl.
23. I love my Fender, in in my model year the MIA ones definitely had natural. I have to say though, if I was buying a 'Fender' today, it'd be a Sandberg. I look at Fenders exactly how I look at Land Rover Defenders. For the right person they're great but you have to put up with a few compromises and you'd have to be bat dropping crazy to buy a new one these days.
