1. I guess if you're the kind that thinks death, skulls, vampires, and dragons are cool, then this is for you!
2. Hi, Would you split? We could definitely do with a couple, possibly 4. Thanks,
3. Great tuners
4. Are we talking the Fender Standard MIM? There are some cracking basses coming from the Mexican factory, including the RoadWorn and Classic series. Standard MIM's (as someone said above) are in my experience, not really all that much better than the Squier CV series, if at all. I would certainly rather buy the CV and save a couple hundred if it was my money. I sold my 2005 USA P bass because it felt hard, cold and I was unable to properly connect with it. It was an awesome instrument, but my Roadworn just felt more organic- that old cliche of 'it was like an extension of me' or 'it plays itself'. I didn't get that from the US, although it felt more precision crafted. I guess in summary the USA felt like it had been built by robots, and the Roadworn by an old dude with magic in his hands. My JV series feels like a bit of both, which is nice. USA instruments are definitely better, but when there are such good deals to be hand second hand why would you consider anything else? £600 for a second hand USA in the current marketplace is a no-brainer.
5. A P bass. That is all.
6.
For me it's got to be Justin Chancellor on Tool's 10000 Days, particularly the clean sound on Jambi. The overdriven sound on that album is great too.
+1. Some great bass tones on this album.
7. Oooohh, if someone snaps up my pedals I'll be all over this!
8. +1 for CV
9. Clamp it for a few days.
10. Bargain price for the SQ. I wouldn't hesitate if I was looking. That's cheaper than MIM standard money for one of the best Jap series!
11. I saw this, I would bid if it wasn't the other end if the country and collection only.
12. How long will it be til he creates a Pino tribute bass using a Classic Vibe? Fender already do what this guy does, but waaaaay cheaper! Will he buy a Roger Walters P bass..........and sell it as a Roger Walters tribute? Adding £700 on the price of course!

GONE.

Wire wool! Sorted.
14.
£300 guitar check £40 neck check £40 bridge check £70 pickup check £1000 for a pre amp ? Must be missing something important.
Don't forget the drawn-on headstock plug.
15. What a waste of luthier time. I imagine he either wept at his lost 3 months of life when he realised he'd created a bag of sh*te, or he's some crazed lunatic like the surgeon from Human Centipede.
16. I guess you need to figure out what you like in a precision. Fat neck or skinny? Wide or slim? Rolled fingerboard? Light instrument or not bothered? Nitro or not bothered? Vintage p bass tones or more modern sounds? Maple or rosewood? I could recommend a Roadworn, as they are freakishly good, but you might not like wide necks and the vintage vibe. I'd also keep an eye out for an SQ series Squier, there was one for sale on here not long ago for a great price. Any MIJ should be a great instrument having said that.
17. I got my '57 style 1983 for a trade deal, equivalent I think to about £700
18.
Not sure this tread will go anywhere. Just looking for comments from folks that play in what I believe you guys would call "Pub Level Bands" and we call " Bar Bands". It's actually funny, when I talk to my older buddies back in Jerseys and say; "Yeah, I'm working this weekend. Were playing The Rock House, Rooters, The Up & Under ect". You know, venue names where a guy could conjure an image of a high end gig. Take this weekend, the pic is where we pulled up to to load in. Any of you guys play places that look like this? Don't get me wrong, in the Summer we get our share of Fair and Festival work but our bread and butter are bar /club shows. Most will tell me; "Blue, you're lucky you have work, a lot of us don't." I;m looking for any comments or stories from guys that play bars on a weekly basis. Humor is always welcomed. Blue
That looks like a cool place to pull up and play at! As a regular pub gigging 'musician' (I use that term loosely) I would be stoked to pull up to a venue to see the black widows hanging around outside. Luckily we've had some great gigs over the years, far more positive experiences than negative, but I have played pubs where there are more people in the band than watching. One particular gig will always stick in my mind- playing to just one man and his dog- and halfway through the first set he gets up and leaves. Pubs in the UK are nowhere near as cool as bars in the US.
19. Sold an Epiphone EB0 for £142 that had been well gigged for a year. You could buy them for around £125 at the time, so that was a surprise.
20.
I have just fallen for medium scale big time. I bought an 80s MIJ Squier 32" scale Precision which is not only medium scale but slightly scaled down proportionally in size - so extremely lightweight with a narrow neck. it just feels 'right' for me - to the extent that I am trying to track down a Jazz to match. You can get medium scale Fender Jazz direct from Fender Japan and I must admit am extremely tempted to cash in some of my cheaper basses and get one. http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/jb62m.html I have another medium scale bass - an 80s Aria Pro II CSB 450 'Black n Gold' which is a joy. There were a few 80s Japanese medium scalers dotted about in the various ranges - some Westones, some Aria Pro II.
The Squier P sounds perfect. How on earth would I find one of those!!
21.
All the bass I'll ever need.
That's the best looking Jazz I've ever seen. Is it Capri orange?
22. Suddenly found myself with an urge to try a 32" scale... Has this happened to anyone else? I'm trying to find out what my GAS choices are, but Google is coming up pretty thin, apart from this: Anything else I could be looking at??
23.
It has struck me recently the frets don't really need to be anywhere near as high as they are to fulfil their function on a bass. I totally get why they are like this on a guitar as it helps a lot in fretting clean chords and digging in on big bends, but on bass, I'm not so sure. I have smaller frets on my Sei and find them comfortable to play. Has anyone taken their frets right down to nearly nothing and found them preferable/usable?
I take it you mean top to bottom size not width? I prefer both thin (vintage mandolin size) and low frets. I've had both my basses (Squier JV, Fender Roadworn) fret dressed and taken the fret heights right down. I was inspired to do this by a Custom Shop P bass I tried which was not much better than my Roadworn, the fret work being the main difference. I dislike Jumbo frets, and I find high frets uncomfortable to play. The benefits I find with low frets are obviously a ridiculously low action (which I love) and the ability to gain way more left hand control. The difference in muting, open notes, ghost notes etc is all way easier to control. Fretting a note is a very small movement and this makes everything easier for me and much less of a strain importantly. If you've ever had aches in your right hand/arm you should probably consider this! That and a decently rolled fingerboard and I'm happy! Surprising how few manufacturers offer this though, I guess it's labour intensive and expensive. Dingwall are out of my price range but the Lee Skylar comment above just made my ears prick up! Not really worried about refrets- if I have to pay £90-odd to have a refret in 5 years time so what, I'd rather have a sweet playing bass.
24.
I have been offered a couple of these as trades recently. I know they are deemed as legendary and a couple of years back were swapping hands at north of £1500. I think I read somewhere that the ultra rare 1st lot with big Fender, little Squier on the headstock, ALL had made in Japan in little writing on the headstock. IE, they didn't have made or crafted in Japan at the back, heel, of the neck. Have I read wrong experts? Thanking you in anticipation Cheers, Karl.
I think what you may be referring to is the difference between export and domestic JV's. The export JV's can be Fender badged (with Squier Series at the end of the headstock). These are the first JV's to be exported and are usually JV0**** or thereabouts. They very quickly changed to the large 'Squier Made in Japan' logo you are used to seeing. The thought is while the Squier badged instruments are amazing, the early Fender badged ones are even better. I've never had the pleasure of trying the earlier model so cannot offer any opinion on this. I also heard they are Nitro finished but am not certain. The Fender badged JV's with a later serial and 'Made in Japan' on the heel of the neck are very likely to be domestic market basses, which came in at various different price points (the old sticker indicating which can sometimes be found in the neck pocket.) So not necessarily anything dodgy, just a JV that was intended for the Japan market. 21 frets is a great hive of information for all things JV.
