To all potential 'relicers' - this is what an original 45 year old bass looks like. so put that angle grinder away for crying out loud.
When it's been kept in a case maybe. How about this, for a 'working' 1968 P bass
Ready!! but unfortunately i will receive it in 2 months!! because i will be abroad :/ but mark said it will take 3 months and he finished it after a month and half!! hard to see because the low quality pic (he told me he took it in quite a dark place) but its a Candy apple red 1964 light relic
That is lovely. I'll tell you whats weird though, when Fender Roadworn series came out, many folks thought the relic'ing was too extreme! Weird to look back now at a 'light relic' that has more wear than a RW. Definitely more attractive relic'ing than a RW, possibly more convincing, but I've never owned a vintage bass. Certainly looks the part to my eyes and is completely to my taste. Awesome. Shame it's not a P!
For fear of upsetting Tedmanzie, I'd just like to say that my 32" scale 80s MIJ Squier Precision (which was once his) is the very nicest bass that I have ever picked up
Yes please. Name your price!! I actually wonder whether Fender Custom Shop/Bravewood/Limelight would be able to build a 33" scale Precision. Might be worth asking when I'm in a position to buy.
what do you mean? smelly?
Yes. It certainly smells now, if it didn't before anyway.

Bought a bass with a low action 5 years ago, and it was like putting on a pair of old slippers. Never looked back. I need a low action now, and if the bass isn't capable of it, it gets moved on quickly. I've had fret work done over the years which have really helped enable the relief to be as minimal as possible. Positives for me- much more fretting hand control. Ghosting, muting, note length control, all easier for me with a low action. My plucking hand does have to have controlled attack, but I can still dig in when needed. Much less fretting noise, and a smoother sound overall for me, but still plenty of thump. I acclimatised to playing this way and it felt natural from the start, from the first time I picked up that bass. It does require work for me, but not loads of concentration, just seems to be a good fit for my style I guess.
If it's a deeply dripping lustrous nitro re-fin and Candy Apple Red is my favourite colour then a simple yes would be the answer. I don't understand the level of negativity on this forum when someone 'blatantly' tries to recoup what they've spent on something. Do I think its overpriced? Probably yes, but I don't think there's anything so desperately wrong in trying to get your money back if you've invested a lot of time and energy in a project.
Then you sound like exactly the type of person the seller is targeting. I'd rather stick to the average prices I see late 80's MIJ P basses go for, which is around £400. You can spend that on your new Affinity! No negativity, please take this forum in the spirit it is intended! I'm just trying to find a way to explain £1200 for this instrument. The only way it can be explained, is by the seller trying to fill the hole in his bank account. There's not £1200 worth of value in this instrument in my opinion, when you look at the current market. And that is my opinion.
You say this as if it's a bad thing?
Of course it is, for the buyer. To put it into context- I'll buy a Squier Affinity for £100. Spend £300 on having it fully professionally refinished in candy apple red. I'd like £400 for it please. You buying?

On another, similar note, has anyone had experience with a landlord/bar manager that didn't seem keen on booking you, even though you went down really well in their venue? We have several really well established venues, and have built up a good following. A couple of years ago we got a gig at a pub in St Ives, and we rocked the place. Everyone dancing, all the feedback from the bar staff was great, the bar manager was super enthusiastic on the night, but never gave us another date, despite loads of chasing. One of his reasons was that the punters just want classic rock (we play pogues-esque folk rock). That same bar manager is now in charge of one of our established venues, and it just so happened we were already booked in for a gig there last month. The place went ballistic, as usual (we've had people crowd surfing in there before-yes in a pub with no stage) and the place must have made a fortune. We usually gig here 3 times a year, one of the venues favourite bands, and wouldn't you know, the new bar manager now isn't giving us any gigs.
Particularly when they're too lazy to even be bothered to post the bloody thing. Having said that, after a buyer broke a guitar I sold, badly repacked it & posted it back to me unsolicited - then made a claim against me saying I'd sold him a damaged item, I started adding "no returns". Ebay can be a nightmare for sellers. Jon.
Too true, and half the time eBay just take the buyers word for it, without a shred of proof. The seller has to stump up all the evidence, and then eBay will still side with the buyer. Maybe we should launch a campaign? We could experiment- order something from eBay, wait til it turns up, then put a hammer through it. Claim it was broken on arrival and keep quiet from then on. See if we get our money back. Could also try saying it didn't arrive, etc. with another product. Could film the whole thing for a later YouTube video to blow the lid on their evil ways!
A full nitro refinish and professional relic job won't have been cheap.
No, but would you pay more than double the expected price for an instrument that had been refinished than one that hadn't? He's blatantly trying to recoup his costs. Which he won't!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131375528201 Am I being a tad harsh? From what I can gather this is a Jap P with a refin and a new wiring kit? If that's the case, surely £500 is more in the ball park? Or is there more to it that I'm missing? Does it belong to someone on here?

Nice it didn't sell. I genuinely have no idea how someone could consider selling an instrument they've had for that long, and with so much history, while they've still got a roof over their head.
-
Does it matter what colour the bass is then? The amp? T shirt you're wearing? Should I stand the Par Can pointing directly at my amp head for some multi-colour tone osmosis?
refin and non original bits, I can't see £20k in that!
Yes! Oh dear. I don't think he knows. What's with the bumper car fetish? How strange.

Posh Pawn- Dave Something (I missed that bit) who has played with Clapton, sessions with the Who, etc, auctioning a 1962 Jazz, hoping to get at least 20k for it. We'll find out shortly! (Adverts now) It looks amazing.
This is basically a Wizard Thumper, Same design and spec, Same winding machine, Same suppliers and tooling. Only difference is me or Dave winding, Andy at Wizard spent some time with us teaching his magic tricks of the trade also.
Sweet! -
Good band. The members from Small Faces that went on to become the Faces were lucky. They worked with 2 phenomenal singers. I prefererred Steve Marriots voice over Rod Stewerts, but only my opinion of course.
Yep, all about Stevie Marriott for me. http://youtu.be/7YfPks4hvHs
Hi Guys, Sorry for the radio silence, We have been extremely busy and I have been welcoming a new baby daughter to the Hot Rod family Below is a quick comparison demo of our Thumper P Bass set by session ace Don Richardson, He describes them as "Its like having a blanket lifted off of my amp", Love to know what you guys think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjzgCdNLLlw
How close is this to the old wizard thumper? That was a great p'up, managed to sound warm and vintage like, with clarity and grind at the same time. I loved that p'up. -
They look like they've been caught in the trawl of an Atlantic fisherman. They are a bit OTT. I think Limelight have for it spot-on for the heavy RW look. The RW look does seem to shift on eBay when done well. I've thought about chancing my arm before.
