1. another great interviewer with an interesting musician. Thanks.
  2. Could the sounds you think of as grungey and being lost in the mix also be interpreted as contributing to a heavier overall sound? Not for me either in a band either but I do like the odd bit of downtuned guitars and bass blending.
  3.
And if you play lighter it always gives the option of digging in for effect.
What ET says and has been mentioned by some others. Surely its about having both a light touch and the ability to dig in when needed? (or hard and really hard! ). Different tools for different jobs.
  4.
Oh, I do the opposite to everyone else then, i try and stick the vocal line over the bass line as soon as I know what notes they're meant to be, so the whole thing sticks as one massive rhythmy-melodic thing in my head, and become inseperable.
This is what I do. All about practice and confidence IMO. Also I love bands with female and male vocalists. Extra versatility and possibilities
  5.

Everything the wise Dr says. A couple of years ago I couldn't find a band playing the kind of music I wanted to play so wrote my own music and put my own band together. Couple of years down the line a new band but couldn't find a singer who stuck. Learning to sing with the first gig in a few weeks.
  6.
That's not the typical pickup/switch arrangement for a Jag is it?
As I understand it (and I may well be wrong) the Squier Jag's have a very different set up to the Fender Jag's Fender - multiple switching options and jazz pickups

  9.
I use guitars for composing and recording and never gig on them
Same here. I'm a terrible guitarist but fiddle around on electric and acoustic as part of writing and recording. I think an (admittedly rough) understanding of another instrument has helped me play with guitarists in bands and made me a better musician
  10. Plenty of examples and bands in this thread.
  11. August bank holiday is closing in fast. The first gig is Saturday 25th at Soundhouse in Leicester is anyone fancies it. Set getting nice and tight but nerves increasing too.
  12.
Depends where you're playing. When I used to play proper venues there was pa support. I'm in a function band now, and I'd say 99% of the venues don't have pa support. That is for weddings, parties etc.
Ah, I see. thanks, its been bugging me for a while. Now I know.
  13. I use an Orange SP210 on an amp stand as a stage monitor which works perfectly for me. To be fair it probably would stuggle in bigger venues without PA support. Although it once coped well in a garden with a drummer and guitarist (1x12 combo I think) On a side issue (apologies) where are all these venues people play without PA support? I've only ever played 2 gigs without a PA.
  14. You're finally coming to Leicester. Excellent. Will do my best to be there. Crumblin' Cookie is a great place. I'd recommend trying to get something to eat there if you can. Good food.
  15. Bass and lead vox in the new band. Bass and backing in every other band I've been in. Electric Guitar, bass, lead and backing vocals for home recording project.
  16. Further update. I booked our first gig for August bank holiday. Plenty of time to get the set super tight.
  17. Update. After a couple more jam sessions where the potential singer didn't turn up I discussed it with the band. They were very keen and the drummer said that he'd been thinking of suggesting it himself. Looks like I'm going to go for it.
  18.
Will the £50 cover the petrol to collect it? Oh hang on they want you to give them £50 In all honesty it's got to be worth £50 hasn't it.
This is also a very good point.
  19. Hmm, its very tricky to recommend amps to other musicians. Most people will recommend either 1) what they use or 2) what they started out with. To fall foul of the first of these I used an Ashdown EB12-180 in my first band. It totally did the job and even the new models would be within your price range. If I were you I'd browse the for sale section here, loads of cheap rigs that'll do the job. Another option is to go along to a shop with a decent selection of amps, try everything and see what takes her fancy.
  20.
Following a 1000 or so views on this guitar - no-one interested?
Apologies, dunno about anyone else but I came on just for a nosy at a lovely bass. I played one of these a while back, couldn't afford it at the time (still can't actually) but loved it and would like to have one at some stage. Have a bump on me.
  21. Does anyone fancy having a go at being the singer for a new alt-rock band I'm putting together? Guitar, Drums and Bass/backing vox slots are filled so just looking for a singer so we can get gigging asap. Based in Leicester but hopefully gig around the midlands and beyond depending on how things go. Songs written (think QOTSA, Primus, BRMC, Nirvana), iffy recordings can be found here http://soundcloud.com/robs_solo_recordings. If you don't fancy it but know someone who might want to have a go then let me know. Cheers all
  22.
Does anyone who has more that one speaker cab split them up. For example, placing a cab either side of the drummer? If this isn't a good idea why not?
Interesting question. I've never seen it done but would be interested in anyone experiences with it.
  23. stage left whenever possible. Close to hi hats and less chance of my head stock colliding with anything on stage.

    Hello

Welcome to the forum. We have plenty of music and plenty of gear.
  25.
Also bear in mind that outdoors sound just gets lost so even PA tops that'll do a decent sized hall won't seem very loud at all!
Well said. IME outdoors you need a lot more air moving power than inside. Guess its because there are no roof and walls to reflect the sound, plus you usually end up covering a pretty big area at outdoor gigs.
