Alternatives to drums as percussion in a band setting
rOB replied to rOB's topic in Other Instruments
Should work. There are loads of stomp boxes out there ranging in price from not a lot to a couple of hundred pounds. You could always try one of these http://www.footdrums...uemart&Itemid=6 Steve
Just a smidge more than I was planning on spending! Was thinking of a self build but the whole thing might need to wait for a bit. Loads of drummers have suddenly come out of the woodwork so jamming with a few over the next few weeks. Still want to give it a go. -
The delicate sound of thunder. Two T-40s (normally the sunburst one though) through a sansamp into an Orange AD200 and OBC 8x10. Absolute monster.
Soils self and hides under the covers.

Any info on the history of amplifying double bass?
please get better.
Well said. I really want Jools to be a good show. Unfortunately the quality of the recent series has not been great. I think artist selection is a major stumbling block.

thanks, will tune in.
Are you stark staring bon........ oh go on then. Track title - 'Phosphoribosylformylglycinamide flavour' No idea why. Final mix yet too be done. The backbone was done in one go as an improvisation, we then cut some bits out, joining up the remainder adding odd keyboard noises. Drums, bass, guitar and piano keyboards are all the original take.
Thanks, I like it.

1) neck - slim, 24 frets - perfect for "normal" playing and higher position soloing and chords 2) 2 pickups with blend control 3) light, balances well 4) looks the dogs danglies (IMO)

I couldn't have even hazarded a guess but I really like the sound and the playing. Any chance of hearing the full track?

Clarinet whilst I was at school, then bought myself a bass with money from a summer job at about 19 recently learning a little electric guitar for writing and recording purposes. Really fancy learning the drums but I live in a small flat so might be tricky to get the practice in.
Played guitar in a punk performance band in Berlin. Chatted up a girl with big tits to do the bass part. Got up at her place went and bought a bass for her to use. Was a cool project. She moved back to Swizerland for rehab. Everyone eventually left, but the bass. This was later smashed by some arab kids in a squat in Paris, re-assembled, and sold in London. I miss it, it was a great bass.
Great story!

Hi all, Ashdown 210T cabinet for sale. Well rounded, deep sound. I bought it as an extension for an Ashdown Combo, then used it as a second cabinet under my Orange rig and it did a great job in both situations. I've tended to use it on its side so the speakers are in a vertical line for a smaller stage footprint and higher speakers. I've had it about a year and a half but have really only gigged it 3 or 4 times and never thrashed it hard. Its the newer model, 2x10 and a tweeter, two ports in the back, vinyl covering and metal corners. Good condition except for a couple of nicks in the vinyl which I've tried to show in the pictures. Ashdown website Collection only from Leicester city centre. Just £90 to you lovely people. Edit for spelling.

Not last night but Saturday. Covers gig at Catthorpe Hall near Rugby. Function venue I think. Easy load in, fed and watered with the guests at the party. We played one set between two sets by a Latvian folk band who were very helpful so we shared their very fancy Bose PA for vocals and keyboard. Excellent sound on stage and out front without monitors. We played well during our set, full dance floor from the first to the last song. Me and the guitarist got invited back up to jam with the other band. Great fun. The "big" rig sounded great and never went above a third of volume or gain despite having no PA support. Think I'll be putting the Ashdown cab up for sale, I just don't need it and hopefully someone else could make better use of it. We were being put up at the venue and after playing we were invited to join the party which went on until about 5 with a lot of drinking and singing. Also got invited to go to Latvia to play at a bar there in July, not sure if that'll happen but it'd be great fun if it came off.

Alternatives to drums as percussion in a band setting
rOB replied to rOB's topic in Other Instruments
Something else I've been thinking about are stomp boxes like the one Seasick Steve uses sometimes. I think you could combine elements of the cajon snare into one and have very simple kick drum and snare sounds under your feet. What I'm thinking of is a wooden box, maybe 12"x10"x4" with a microphone or piezo pickups inside. The top surface to be played/stamped on would be screwed down tight at one end (bass drum type sound?) and loosely at the other (snare type sound?). The loose end could have snares/rattles on the underside and maybe a metal plate on the top side for a sharper sound. Any thoughts on that? Seen anyone doing anything similar? -

As always, BCers come up trumps on ideas and encouragement. Thanks everyone.
We use a Cajon as the core percussion instrument in Braziliance but it is supplemented by congas etc. The cajon is the main instrument for some pretty intense flamenco stuff and noone has ever really transferred that intensity to a Rock setting so now is your chance!! There are also beatboxers, an under explored options for bands. We have all seen the amazing youtube clips of solo beatboxers but why couldn't a properly amplified beatboxer not be part of the core rhythm section of a band? Frame drummers are another option (look up Trilok Gurtu). And, of course, there is the drum machine route.
An amplified beatboxer could be amazing, excellent idea. I would never have thought of that. Well worth looking into. Will have to look up frame drums, afraid I've never heard of them.
There's always one of these http://www.thomann.d..._synth_drum.htm I've a friend with the Yamaha version (four times the price) and it sounds dam good (but they're a good drummer).
Never seen one of those before. very interesting. -
Please report back your findings - does it work or did you find a better way?
Been a bit busy with a covers gig recently ( Every time I play with this band I tell myself it's going to be the last time) but should have some time at some point over the long weekend. A new song is almost ready to be recorded, so will do some work and let you know.
Tom Morello.
Good shout. The band would be totally different without his distinct noise-mongering.
John is interesting - the kind of riff you might hear in a folk club with the occasional added b5 to justify the alt-rock tag Heard the others as well. Take my comments with a pinch of salt because this isn't my genre and the chances are it's meant to be this way (remember the BBC engineer who apologised to "Mr Hendrix" for not being able to get rid of the distortion and feedback?). FWIW I'd start by bringing the drums up as far as you can, then fade up the other channels until you can hear both them AND the drums. As you've got a lot of bass stuff going on (distorted an' all) its going to be tricky to make that appear as the "lead" instrument without splatting everything else, but try to resist turning the wick up on the bass EQ on the bass tracks. Try the 800Hz - 2kHz band instead at +3dB on the bass track. You might get more definition in the bass dept without splatting the tracks the contain more treble content. Vocals can stick out more if you boost the 2.5kHz - 4kHz band, and scoop out the same band in other tracks like rhythm guitar. Anyway thanks for the entertainment (John especially) and I hope you enjoy more playing & mixing ...
Thanks so much for the advice. Much appreciated. I'll have a look into those mixing tips.
still trying to grow into being a front man as well as the bass player but getting there.
well done for having the confidence to be the focal point. Something I struggle with.

As has been said by others, this is a great first attempt. Well done. I'd also like to congratulate you on putting something up online. I also write and record solo and have a soundcloud page. Sitting on things for a while is not unusual for me either. As I'm a rubbish guitarist I turn down the tone control on the guitar. That seems to help reduce some string noise although as other have said it isn't a huge problem in this style of music. Keep it up and let us know how it goes.
