2. he he! Thanks for posting
3.
rOB Glad to hear that’s how you do it, cause that’s what I’m thinking of doing, hence that’s why I’m thinking we have all got it wrong!
Yep, seems to work for me. I use a small cabinet on an amp stand pointed diagonally at my ears and back towards the drummer.
4.
This meant that I was trying to monitor myself from the front PA sub that was approx 6 metres or more diagonally opposed to me. Also created timing issues as the drummer couldn’t hear my backline either and ended up trying to play off the sound reflection coming from the back of the room. I have come across this situation before but probably not quite a bad, so it got me wondering have we got it all wrong and really should have our backline laid out in front of us?
Sorry if I'm misunderstanding this bit but I'm with you on having backline speakers not pointing straight forward when using a PA. I sometimes have my speakers pointing diagonally back and across the stage. The theory is that there sound be less leakage into the audience (so the sound tech can do their thing) and seems to give better monitoring for me and the drummer than if the bass cabs point directly forwards (i.e. away from the drummer). No sound tech has ever mentioned it causing problems for them and on the little stages I tend to play on, it means that we don't need any bass in the monitors. Anyone else ever done this? Any sound techs see a problem with it?
5.
That is why guitar amps are always miked up. I'm not sure it's so much an issue of speaker distortion, but the speaker certainly rolls off a lot of the really fizzy not very nice sounding high end distortion that you hear on the DI of a guitar amp on distortion.
Ah I see, thanks for the clarification.
6. Thanks Shep and Ant for this.
7.
I've found my MarkBass cabs are a bit too on the boomy side mic'd up with a bass drum mic. In the studio yesterday I mentioned this to the engineer, he used some Beyer Dynamic mic and the cab sounded so clear and as I hear it, it was wonderful. As for DI's? I love them! Its so much nicer I found, the sound man I tend to use loves the DI on my Aguilar head, he rates it really highly. It gives him an excellent clean strong signal to work with. I know what you mean about guitar cabs being mic'd up so why not bass cabs? Could it be something to do with the frequencies? It is something I've pondered on before. Dan
I always thought that it was something to do with guitarists often using/liking speaker distortion? Isn't that the argument for guitar amps sounding best at high volumes? I might be wrong though. IMO, as long as I'm DI'd post amp rather than before my signal goes through the amp then I'm happy.
8.
I hope so, because everything else is great.
Best of luck with it.
9.
No, it's not like that. Behavioural and procedural issues rather than musical.
Any chance that after a fully honest discussion that things could change for the better?
10. Part of the stage show. Love it.
11. Great read. Thanks Shep
12. I played a CAR one a few times a couple of years ago. As I remember it had a slim and shallow neck, lovely balance and was very comfortable to play. Huge variety of sounds as you'd expect from all the switches and pots. I liked it a lot.
13. Have a good one. Loving the band.
14.
Anyone ready for another interview???
Oh yeah!
15. Not that I can think of. Will watch the thread with interest though.
16. Can see both sides on this one. Having said that if I was auditioning for a band I'd expect to be told what to learn. If I happened to know the material already then great but if not then I'd do my best to learn them (making sure that I was learning the same version that they play in the same key).
17. Only ever had comments from the band about amp changes rather than bass changes.
18.
I find the best thing to do is get a mic with an on/off switch and if you get feedback then just switch it off. Simples.
Yep, that works for me too.
19.
Hope this helps
Thanks for this explanation. At a level I can just about understand
20. great idea for a series of interviews. Thanks for putting the work in and sharing with the rest of us.
21. Dunno about it being out of favour, still see it about at gigs and in rehearsal spaces. Just sold an Ashdown cabinet this week. Best of luck with your sales.
22. To offer a different perspective, I use mine regularly with just a 2x10 and it works so well that I've just gotten rid of my additional cabinet. Don't mean to argue and YMMV
23. Totally flat, played into an Orange SP210. Tend to add some lows from the bass tone controls rather than on the amp but that might be a limitation of the cab. All about the gain control IMO.
24. I like them If anyone missed them, here's a track from Jools Holland http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GswJc875Tik
25.
It worked a treat. The replacement nut arrived 3 months ago, but this repair is still holding firm, so I haven't bothered fitting the new nut.
If it works then why bother!
