1. Contacts for stage. Anything that helps my confidence is good Plus better peripheral vision.
  2.
I would never plug my very nice amp into an unknown cab. Especially one in a rehearsal room. Can someone please explain to me wht this practice is considered acceptable.
Excuse my ignorance but please could you explain why that's a bad/dangerous thing to do?

    GK MB Series

I can't say whether the mb500 will have exactly the sound you want but imo it does the quick attack thing you mentioned. Possibly to do with the upper mids? And I really like its drive sound too.
  4. May I recommend/request one and then the other? The order seems irrelevant.
  5. I tend to take my head for the pre amp growl and eq. Then line out into the effects return of the rehearsal room rig or into the cabinet. I like to walk to rehearsal (and gigs sometimes) but have a bit of assurance that I'll have something that sounds good.
  6. I'm another that runs the eq on the bass flat (admittedly its only 2 band anyway) and use the pickup blend and amp eq for sound shaping.
  7.
Engineer's choice
This. I always try to make friends and be as easy to work with as possible.
  8.
Well I`ve always carried a DI/Pre-amp type pedal for those kind of moments.
This. Being able to get a signal into the pa without your amp can be invaluable.
  9.
My only thought is that with a DI the sound is clean, no matter the amp setting (I may well be wrong) so to hear the distortion you'd have to be mic'd?

You can shove an SM57 in front of a guitar amp,but with lower bass frequency you're getting into more specialist - and therefore more expensive - microphones.

My guess with DI vs Mic vs DI/Mic might be as simple as what people agree sound best in the mix. Probably what makes finding an answer to this one pretty difficult... everyone's got their own experiences, and depends entirely from one rig to the next. I just watched a Meshuggah gear vid actually, and the guitars and bass are all di'd! No cabs. Actually their live set up is nuts with geekdome, worth checking out.
Thanks everyone, that probably covers it.
  10.
In which situation? Live or Studio?
Sorry - live. Any ideas? Is it just that its generally considered "a good thing" to hear the speaker distortion as well as the amp distortion in a guitar amp?
  11. great thread idea. Why is it that guitar amps are usually mic'd whilst bass amps are usually DI'd?
  12. Might well be around! Will drop in if I can. O'Neills can be a busy place on a Saturday night as I'm sure you know so should be a good one.
  13.
Just back from B&Q and did some pressure tests with various woods (pressing down on it really hard) and it would appear that 15mmx12mm pine stripwood will be strong enough. Going to do a build diary once I've worked out the details
Will be watching with interest. Will you be putting wheels on the box?
  14.
OK... how?
OK.... why?
  15.
I agree - corduroy is so last year.
Ha! I don't think my tracksuit top is helping either.
  16. Mmm, not sure. I'm relatively new to being the focal point of a band so still working on it. Do my best to pull some shapes but think we need to work on the band's appearance.
  17. I hate to be a realist and go slightly IT but consider the weather. Rain can damage your gear. Ask about shelter from the elements in stage? Have a great time, hope it goes well.
  18. Played at the Shed in Leicester last night. Went ok, struggled to pull much of an audience if I'm being honest. Gig went ok, sound was good and band was tight. Nice reaction. Saw a band called Twin Arrows who were a kind of rock/jazz/funk fusion. French band. Excellent, well worth checking out.
  19. Congrats on the mb500. I love mine. Fits in my bits bag, great sound, flexible eq and footswitchable drive channel.
  20. No useful advice I'm afraid. Just that I hope you get sorted in whatever way works for you.
  21.
Christ, I'm starting to feel like the exception here, there hardly seems to be anyone really enjoying being in an originals band so far.
I bloody love playing in my originals band. No it doesn't pay a lot, yes its loads of hard work and audiences can be difficult. But there's NOTHING like playing your own music live.
  22.
It's later today Rob!
Whoops! Wow, exciting times. Glad things are looking better for you.
  23. So what happened last night? Hope it worked out for you in either way
  24.
As for strings, maintenance, etc, I'd be paying for that anyway
Well said
