1. have you tried Status Hotwire Half-Rounds? Interested in a comparison.
2. Surely you need dampening to stop panels vibrating not bracing. Won't bracing just strengthen the panels, so they can be thinner with the same strength?
3. I have what might be deemed a stupid question .... if I'm correct the BF uniqueness comes from a cone with a high excursion, i.e. movement on the z-axis or in & out to most of us. Is it possible playing at higher volume that these cabs will move? In my mind a light box & speaker violently moving back & forwards shifting air conjures up all sorts of images of BF cabs roaming the stage like demented Daleks
4.
Which amp should I use with it? I would suggest a good 300W @ 8ohms / 500W @ 4 ohms Class D amp.
I'm confused. Your pics show that this cab is rated at 200W @ 8 ohms.
5. Just my opinion, but can't help but feel the next logical progression for BF is to finish all their cabs like this. Looks great.
6. In all seriousness, I think you can take your pick on the modern day cabs. I use the Vanderkley 210MNT's which I love the tone from, but having played through & owned Barefaced, GK, Ashdown, TKS, Tecamp, Aguilar, EBS they'll all do you a decent turn. It's getting into personal preferences regards cost, size, weight & finish that the disagreements start.
7. I think part of the value comes from those that have sentimental value to an era. People with money to burn are likely aged 50-60 right now & remember basses from the era they were starting out. So, 60s at the moment. 20 years time it'll be early Warwicks, Wals and Status basses that the 50-60 year olds will be after. The exception will be early examples of Fender basses & Fender,Gibson,Martin guitars.
8. I also suffer from neck & shoulder pain and was wondering. While all these straps (duo strap excluded) make your bass feel lighter, is it actually spreading the load better or are you actually doing more harm than good by using one? I use a comfort strap by the way, but also invested in a lighter bass a few years ago too.
9.
Thing is , this is the first Barefaced cab i like the look of and could actually see myself using..time will tell !
Me too.
10. I tend to go with http://www.designacable.com. Neutrik jack plugs, Van Damme cables and lots of lovely colours if you want. Decent price too.
11. I really don't see any problem with it. You agreed a fee & I presume got paid it. How the bar manager finds that cash is up to him, pay at the door, a few pence on a pint, pass round a hat. Isn't that called business?
12. I'm shallow enough that my amp & cabs have to look good, to me at least, not always to others mind you.
13. In true BC tradition, I thought I'd post on here instead of asking Alex directly I know how much some of you guys love your Barefaced cabs... I see that Mr Jah Wobble has started to use BF cabs but looking at his Twitter feed I don't recognise the cabs sitting under the Ashdown amp. Any suggestions?
14. I don't really get the point of this post, other than to antogonise a few fellow BC'ers. I hope the mods get a hold of it as it's going the way of TB and I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that I cannae be arsed with hearing BF love & hate in every thread.
15. There are guys (& girls) on Basschat that will tell you whichever cab is best. In my opinion you have to test these yourself or at least take an established guess. I've owned several cabs over the years & like many others would have been more than happy with most of them if it hadn't been for Basschat & reading a lot of the amp/cab forums. I used to own a Compact G2. Very lightweight, tone was good, not any better than some other cabs I owned but then they were slightly bigger or heavier. I felt the sound passed my legs in a lot of the gigs I do as I have to stand so close to my rig. Rest of the band actually thought I'd made it myself! So I got rid & tried something I thought would fit better with my needs. Also did a shootout with some BF, TKS & Vanderkley cabs recently and I preferred the VK tone. Owner of the TKS preferred their tone and the BF we both liked but it was the biggest of the setups and shifted more air but it wasn't number 1 for either of us. I guess what I'm saying is try as much as you can or buy used if you can, expect to go through the same journey as a lot of us have and enjoy the experience!
16. Why not just email Marc Vanderkley and ask?
17. What's a versatile bass? 2 pickups and a blend/tone knob or do you mean the ones with 2+ pickups, a 3 band EQ & a half dozen switches?
18. If you're thinking of an Ashdown (which I was too) don't rule out a Mesa Carbine amp. Got myself an M6. Wow!
19. I haven't played the Bergs but own a couple of Vanderkley 210mnt. Size is great, weight is easily manageable and weighs the same as the single 12 I believe. I know there are lighter cabs but 17kg ain't much and an easy lift even for a middle-aged bloke like myself. I sometimes just gig with the one cab and being honest using the 2 cabs is overkill but sounds immense. Great punchy cab with an underlying bass "heft" to the tone that I found a lot of other smaller cabs lacked. Lovely warm mids which is what drew me to the cab & the tweeter can actually bring in a lot of highs if needed. Too much for me, so mine are set at less than a quarter to give a nice bite to the tone without being too much. I play in a function band and really go for a middly tone, definitely not a slapper! Hope that helps.
20.
Your sig indicates two 2x10s... Not quite the same as one 4x10?
It depends, in maths 2 x 2 x 10 = 4 x 10 but I agree in Basschat world it's not quite the same.
21. I just love basschat... Have to agree with Phil Starr on this and believe that it's really about weight, size & power handling in cabs these days. Oh & for me, how a cab looks & how it handles the rigours of gigging. Amps with versatile EQ, active basses again with versatile EQ and hundreds of stomp boxes to change your tone really mean that the tone a cab delivers doesn't really matter to 99% of us any more. We've got a million other ways to dial in the tone we're after. However after saying all that, I'm still a dinosaur and think 10's, 12's & 15's each have a sound and after going through a few cabs in my days I'm back with a 4x10.
22. Haha, edited my post too. Not if he uses 8mm ply? I forgot to add that as a request too.
23. Now my post doesn't make any sense!!! Anyway, nothing against BF cabs, I had one a gen2 compact a while back although wasn't for me. Im really intrigued what a couple of gen3 Super Compacts could do. My reply was a bit tongue in cheek although inset handles would be nice.
24. Inset handles, Tolex covering & a grill that covers the whole of the front of the cab. You did ask 😀
25. Not everyone plays in a band with a PA capable of delivering bass to FOH via a DI though, or monitors to cope either.
