1. So, I've had myself a couple of Barefaced One10's for a while now and they sound great and are really light, they do sometimes lack a bit of bite. My guess is it's my old problem of standing too close to the cabs on a lot of gigs and the real sound flapping past my ankles! So, I'm thinking of following in mcnach's footsteps and stacking a pair of Two10's vertically to get the sound up nearer my ears. I see that the Markbass 102P Traveller cabs are similar in weight (slightly less so) and wondered whether this was an option to try as well. Surprised there's never been a comparison done on the BC forum but would value opinions. My current amp does 2 ohms but it's not to say it'll always be my amp, so the benefits of the MB are they are 8 ohm cabs (so 4 ohm load) & have recessed handles which I've always preferred. However, tone wins every time, so would need to sound great to trump the BF. For the record, I'm a less bass, more mid-type of guy than a low rumble, smiley-face one. Cheers y'all.
2.
Don't listen to us. We all suffer from confirmation bias and will recommend what we have.
Don't entirely agree with this. A lot of us have come from practice amps to the gear we have now and owned a lot of different gear in between. I've had everything from small combos to 8x10 rigs and so I like to think I can offer some valuable advice. My current rig is best for what I do just now but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. OP is simply asking for a "better sounding" practice amp that won't break the bank. Personally I'd be looking at GK, Hartke, Fender, TC or even Line 6 for a step-up from your current practice combo, with a 2x10" or 12" speaker depending how loud you want to go. Hope that helps.
3. the beauty of the smaller D800 is that it fits beautifully in a laptop backpack
4. Great review & got me thinking about my rig (again) so cheers for that. Currently got Mesa D800 with 2 x Barefaced One10 and it does about 80% fantastically well. However, I might be tempted to go 2 x Two10 stacked just to get that bit of height when I'm standing almost on top of my amp. I know my amp can cope but really wonder why Alex doesn't do an 8 ohm Two10 option.
5. Do what I've done, stick some insulating tape on the switch so it can't move to 2ohm by mistake.
6. Thanks for the sentiments folks & the explanation on inflation Sounds like nobody wins with inflation, I ask for a pay rise and if I get anything, I then pay extra for other goods & services and essentially I'm no better off. Back on course regarding the OP, I'm still off the (naive) mind that BC is a community and we all do our bit for each other.
7. No problem, but the fact I've not had a pay rise in 4 years should mean inflation has remained at zero. And before you blame Mrs Largo, the fact she is disabled, had to give up her own business 10 years ago & is now also under threat of having benefits taken away or cut should actually mean you guys (& girls) will all be much better off than you were a few years back. No worries though, my sh*tty circumstances means inflation must be about -40% for the rest of you 👍 I'm still not going to take the blame for Trump though. That's taking it too far 😂
8. Sorry this thread seems to be going a little off track. I'm no economist but what exactly is inflation & what exactly determines it?
9. Business that rely on selling for profit is different, but why do individuals have to make a profit on their gear? Why is society about making the most money you can out of something? If everyone sold their old Fenders or Wals for what they paid for them, then surely they should be happy just getting their money back. I'm certainly not into politics but I do think our economy is now built on this fixation with everything increasing in value, year on year.
10. Not saying it's not complicated, just answering the previous post that asks how you do it.
11.
Am I missing the point somehow? How do you retain some kind of ownership or influence over something you have sold?
Football teams do it. Clubs can build in clauses that say they're entitled to a percentage of the resale fee of a player. Interesting question, if someone offered a '66 Jazz for £1000 on Basschat with the clause of giving the seller 50% of the resale fee (if sold within 5 years) who would go for it?
12. Or, following the same analogy. You visit an 80 year old who's husband just died and she's moving his stuff on. A vintage Fender, been under the bed for the last 50 years and because it's so old, she's after fifty quid for it. Would you seriously give her the £50 and think it's fine because she's happy she got the money she wanted for it.
13.
You see a JV Squier Precision in the window of your local crack converters for £145. You know what it is, they obviously don't.
What, you mean nicked?
14.
The dealer I bought my 'new' car from offered me £1000 for it as a trade-in. I decided that wasn't enough and sold it privately for £1450. Does that make me a mercenary money-grabber? Nope, it makes me sensible, not to mention £450 better off.
Truth is, nobody wants a trade-in over a pure cash sale so nobody wins, hence the low value offered. On a trade-in the seller typically loses out, the shop loses out & any potential buyer usually loses out.
15. I tend to go with T-Bay on this one. I know it's naive & against the bigger capitalist society we live in, but it's a nice thought to think the Basschat "community" wouldn't be the place for those just wanting to make a quick buck on reselling gear. I've always tended to price my gear on the low side thinking it's going to like-minded individuals on this forum.
16.
Is it even the same person selling it, could have been traded already? Could they have done a trade with that shop? Is it anyone else's business?
True, but unlikely in my opinion. 3 sales in 3 weeks. OP to original buyer to second buyer to trade-in/shop. Possibly, but given how much less you get for a trade-in why not at least try selling it privately on Basschat first. Probably not.
17. Just found this article as I was about to raise my own topic & did a search first.... I missed out on a beauty of a Zon bass in the BC classifieds, listed & sold within 2 hours.... Now, less than 3 weeks later & it's on The Gallery site for 50% more than it was offered on BC. I appreciate if the buyer gets it, doesn't like it & wants to resell or trade-in. Selling through a shop who wants commission, the 50% probably isn't too far off the mark. But, why not punt it back through BC and give someone else the opportunity? It's supposed to be a community after all.
18. We've always found Google Calendar works well. What's the problem you're having with it?
19. Cheers, reason I ask is my dad has a '73 Precision bought from new & its finish is checked to an inch of its life & the paint is also worn off big style! Yours looks like a new bass in comparison. Great looking bass by the way.
20. Thread hijack alert.... can someone please tell me why some of the early Fender basses get checking on the finish whereas others don't?
21. Welcome onboard from a fellow Fifer. Whereabouts?
22. Any pics of the back of the bass & neck please.
23. I've owned a fair few high end basses & gone through a few custom build too. I'll be completely honest, none of the custom builds were dogs & if you go for a "named" luthier (mine were Sei & Shuker builds) they've built enough basses to know what works. I chose woods, pickups, finishes & a few other details, always guided by the builder. There's a certain thrill in the building process too! However, my advice for what it's worth. Either buy the vintage Jazz you're really after & keep your fingers crossed OR buy a decent used bass for a decent price, if you like it great, if not sell it on & try another... I did this for a while & reckon I broke even over 7 or 8 basses, losing a few quid on some & making some on others. Great fun & you might find a wee gem in there. You've got the cash sitting to buy that first bass at anything from £500 to a couple of grand if you like. I'd go with the Fender Flea bass suggested earlier, pickup one used & see how it feels. Punt it on if you don't like it or you might just have found a 60's jazz you like. Oh yeah, good luck & have fun...
24. I do think it should be called the British "Pop" Music Industry awards. There's certainly a whole load more British Music that isn't represented at these things.
25. Cheers all, sounds like I have nothing to worry about. I've been running this way for 3-4 months with no problems so will happily continue to use my lightweight rig.
