Its not that I want to be a smart arse, its that I want to be able to be that quick and flexible and to be able to make things work first time instead of by accident/trial and error. Can't see how I could do that without the core knowledge I have collected.
I'm not in anyway suggesting he was a smart arse. It's just so obvious to me now that with his knowledge of theory (and experience) he, like you, can make an instant decision as to what will work best rather than me stumbling around and eventually coming across something that works so I make you right. Plenty of options, at your fingertips. I'm just gratefull that he's happy to impart all this info at the moment. He writes a lot for radio and TV so he's got the benefit of composition experience too. I love it, gives me something to aspire to.
I remember being totally wowed by the M1 when it came out! Fantastic keyboard at the time. If I had the space I'd go for it, but sadly I don't
I'm on my second one. Had first when they first came out and ended up selling it to Brian whatshisname from Frankie goes to Hollywood after they split up. Think his band was Techtronix? Bought second one a couple of years back for £250 so this one is really cheap for what it does. -

I need theory. This has become obvious to me recently. I thought I had a good grounding but since we've found a new keyboard player for a covers band I'm in, I realise this is not the case. His level of musicianship is way above the rest of the band and now every 10 minutes, we're having to stop as he's suggesting a different note here and there for the bass or an alternative chord for guitar that would never had occurred to us and he's right, all the time. I'm not saying I hadn't learned the songs correctly but we wanted a more funky feel to the music and tend to veer from the originals in some way so he's throwing in a few nice chords here and there and I found it a little embarassing that I just couldn't find the notes that compliment them. Yesterday, in the rehearsal break he was just repeating a couple of chords and then played about 6 bass lines that would work with them. 90% of these wouldn't have even occured to me. Some sounded nicer than others but it's the fact he was able show, and explain, all the options that are open to him.

My jazz bass. Never held anything skinnier.

Do any of you Change your Tone for Gigging?
leschirons replied to la bam's topic in General Discussion
Usually only have to change mine for wooden suspended stages. Stays where it's normally set if I'm on solid ground. Then, the only changes that are made are to keep up with guitarists and over enthusiastic drummers -
Low B for me. Nothing like a D or C on the B string for getting the place shaking. In addition, when I do play a 4 string, the stuff in Eb & D is a tad wimpy so for me the low B is a blessing.

Welcome, and hi from France also seeing as you appear to attracting Francophiles (although my mother in law lives in Watton) Loads of good stuff and nice people here (Basschat, that is)

A Peavey Classic 30. About £250 secondhand. Brilliant.
Really, why? What compels you to make, or be a part of, music?
I've no idea. I complain about everything I play and what other people with me play as well. I get frustrated when I play with much better musicians but there is some sort of weird "danger" buzz going on at the same time. I get frustrated when I play with people below my level. I've been looking for a band that doesn't exist in my world for the last 10 years. I don't compose as I have nothing to offer that would come up to my expectations. But, I still do it.
I'll clap the tube driver this morning then, when I arrive at my destination. If he's working.
Seems like the audience has a harder job than I'd previously anticipated. Surely 1.20 of badly recorded iphone video is not an ideal platform on which to make a judgement unless we'd all been there to see the rest. Maybe he'd played amazing stuff for the previous hour. People do afterall, get into the habit of clapping. I gave up trying to understand the public a long time ago as I've had issues ever since I started playing live. French audiences especially will appreciate whatever you do, good or bad and I'm one of those that will analyse a performance after a gig. It's been a long haul getting some band members to see past 300 people clapping and dancing when we'd played like crap.
We know Victor is a fabulous and immensely musical bassist. The questions surround the athletics audience, and perhaps dear Victor's monetary exploitation of their needs.
Or maybe he's just doing what he's been paid to do, just like in a normal job.

I could be wrong but I'm guessing that as he's standing in front of a Hartke rig with a big Hartke banner behind him, he's doing a clinic or gear demo of some sort and there to impress the punters with some pyrotechnics and I assume he's being paid for it. Bit unfair to judge his playing on that if that is the case. It's probably just the bit that pays the mortgage. I've seen him three times live and this is not what you get. You get tastefull and well constructed bass playing. I doubt that Nigel Clutterbuck stands in a pub and plays 8,000,000 notes per second either (assuming he's in a band that is)

One off auction for Basschat funds. The Mods have kindly agreed to allow this as they hope the expected finish price may allow them to help maintain the Basschat site and go on a camping holiday together at Dale Farm. Up for auction is this quite stunning, left handed, sunburst, Reg Holdsworth signature series Strat from the little known Stagg Custom Shop. Rare SSH pickup arrangement with plastic still on scratchplate, standard Strat type trem unit and recently upgraded cable tie holding the low E string onto the nut. Neck & body dates have been checked. Both are clearly marked “Tuesday” Joking aside, a French mate played this last night (as I'm right handed) and it does really do the SRV Little wing thing exceptionally well. A really nice sound using no effects and just a simple tube head through a 1x12. It can be collected from Essex / London area when I get it sent over from France after the auction has finished, and the final price has been paid to Basschat. Alternatively, delivery to you from Essex could also be arranged at winner’s cost. It will come with its original paper thin oversized gig-bag with wonky zipper, all adjustment tools, cleaning kit and case candy (Hammer, saw, Cillit bang and bag of sweets) The Stagg headstock logo had been removed for some reason but this does not detract from the vintage vibe and obviously gives the new owner the opportunity of writing something in the space. The instrument has recently been checked over by French master luthier and bass guru Christophe Leduc who simply commented “C’est un branleur” which I’m told by my French guitarist, means “It’s a beauty”. The auction is starting at a modest £10 to encourage bidding so please dig deep for this worthy cause and just take a moment to think about their little faces when they wake up in their tent on the first morning.

Started at age 7 with violin (in 1959) at 15 with drums, moved to guitar at age 25, then to bass at 35 keys at about 45 and more recently Banjo, Uke & Mandolin. Just need an upright now to finish off my days with.
