A trip to a good teacher who can properly assess your level and ability and suggest the best way to move forward after finding out what you'd actually like to achieve.
Like most of us I am forever trawling the basses for sale postings just to see what's out there. Whenever a Wal comes up it seems to be treated like the Holy Grail of basses, commanding serious cash and defying the depreciation associated with most custom basses. Having never played one I often wonder what it is that makes them so special. Some I've seen look absolutely amazing but others look like they have been built with the wood from a 70's wardrobe. How much of the price reflects the collectability of the instrument as opposed to the quality. Do they sound any better than a custom Shuker or ACG ? I hankered after an Akai Deep Impact for so long and when I finally got one I was really disappointed and wondered what the fuss was about. Has anybody bought a Wal and found it has not lived up to their expectations or are they truly the best out there ?
Maybe we all have to actually try one out. I've never played one either and feel exactly the same. I don't find them attractive basses at all and can't say I've ever heard one that "blows me away" so it must be in the playing experience I guess. Is there a Wal sound? or is it like anything else that is coloured by the player, amplification etc? Feel the same way about Alembics. I've had two. One looked like it was made in an afternoon with a lump of wood that was found in the corner and sounded okay, the other looked really beautiful and sounded like everyything else I'd ever owned. Still, people love them so there must be something going on there.

The guitarist in one band is a bit of a Robben Ford and Eric Johnson freak se we do about 4 numbers of each. Nailing some of the Roscoe Beck lines is difficult for me as the guitarist always wants to the "live versions" which are always 200mph faster so I admit, I bullshit my way through a couple of those. I got "Animal" by TOTO pretty much spot on last week after about two or three hours but I'm still nowhere near anything like the record on Son of a preacher man that I do in another band. I simply can't reproduce that one, or even get close.

Salut Anthony, Je suis anglais mais il y a huit ans que j'ai habite' en France (La creuse 23) Tres belle basse. J'ai eu un BN5 aussi comme la tienne. Bienvenu. Your English is fine.

A bit sh*te but rewarding. sh*te because, Being my last gig with a classic rock outfit (that the drummer had booked for us) we walked in to find the audience had an average age of 65. They certainly weren't up for Judas priest, UFO and Thin Lizzie. Rewarding because, I met two really nice people on the same bill. A sax player called Patsy Gamble who's from Gloucester, and the singer / guitarist from the 70's Prog rock band Blonde on Blonde who now does a solo acoustic set. Genuinely nice people. Made the night worthwhile.

Jaco probably just kept to his Jazz because he simply loved it and it suited his purpous. Re Jeff Berlin, there is no doubt he is an excellent bassplayer. People tend to slag him off simply because he comes out with the odd contraversial comment. Thing is not to mix up his personality and his ability as a player.

Pic and / or serial number may help, and I'll send it out to all I know in the UK.

That's just strange. I imagine where he works, "Julie" in the photocopying room hides behind a filing cabinet each time she sees him coming down the hallway.
It can be difficult to integrate into a new forum. Most have their own cliques and if you happen to disagree with one of the 'in-crowd' then you might aswell not bother posting at all as it just gets ignored.
Too true. However, I remember one post from a newcomer a few months ago asking for advice on a song he couldn't sort. About 20 members replied with various helpful viewpoints and there was no response whatsoever from the OP. That, I find a bit off. Most on here are happy to offer advice and when they do, it would be nice to acknowledge their input. Re the sales forums, I must admit that I tend not to buy anything from anyone with zero presence on BC but that's just me being cautious, no principles involved.

The Coolest Bass Player On The Planet
Not necessarily the best. Living or dead. My choice is Marcus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2dnerYZs-c...feature=related
A good choice and a worthy second place to Lee Sklar -
I didn't mind that at all to be honest. I think the singer is a Stevie Wonder stalker. However, he can sing. As you say Stevie / JK melange. Loved the drummer. Bass player? can obviously play, and a bit of posing never caused any trouble did it? I general, I liked it.
Now on hold in preparation to go to France! Oddly the only other 2 things I've sold here have gone to Eurozone countries - something to do with the devaluation of the £ Vs Euro I think that makes our second hand market cheaper!
The secondhand market in France has always been more expensive than the UK. I don't quite understand the mindset but people here expect back, what they paid for something 5 years previous, irrespective of condition or, advertise gear with the tag "tres rare" attached to it and expect 500 euros for a battered OLP bass.
Having had to do some work on Jam songs recently, I can confirm that there are in fact at least four Jam tracks from which Macca nicked that line
Bloody hell I never knew that!! He should be locked up same as Lennon should have been for pinching all the Oasis songs. -

Bloody McCartney, nicking a Bruce Foxton bassline. Typical. -
I'm doing one last gig with a band doing the classic rock stuff (AC/DC, Guns, Lizzie, ZEP etc) as I've come to a decision that I don't really enjoy it anymore. I've always listened to, played, and appreciated other genres like Prog, Funk, Soul, Disco, Blues/Jazz crossover but usually found myself in the rock covers arena. I recently started another band with the Mrs and we're doing stuff from Sade', Carole King, Cyndi Lauper and even Laura Nyro and to be honest, it turns me on so much more than the usual Boys are back in town opener and the big Sweet child of mine finish. However, I don't view this as moving on or in, another direction. Just adding more to my personal repetoire. All the previous stuff has just been relegated to the top shelf of the library, but still there for the use of.

Saw them a few years back in Brentwood. Had Georgie Fame and Martin Taylor on board. A great band.
'Ello all. I am fairly new to the site and have enjoyed reading here for the last couple of weeks, so I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm an ageing Tattooed/Hippy/Rocker/Wannabe Cowboy/Miserable Bugger/Hyperactive Child. I have been playing since 1987, when I was 12. And I'm still not very good, certainly not all those years good. I'd love to get into a band but, other than being a bit rubbish, there are other problems... I live in a small village a few miles outside of Carmarthen in Wales, but I never learned to drive so I might as well be on the Moon. The stuff I'd like to play is quite heavy, Thrash/Death/Black/Blackened Death etc... I mentioned this in a local (ha!) guitar shop once and he actually said "Yeah, we had someone in here talking about that stuff a few years ago", 'oh' dear' I though to myself. Any time I've mentioned to musicians that I play Bass they always point me towards the kind of covers groups that makes me want to shrivel up and die inside (the sort that plays Pop music with a singer playing an acoustic guitar and a keyboard player and nothing else). Another thing is that I have absolutely no intention of making any money whatsoever at this, I don't care if it never leaves the livingroom/garage, I just want to get together with some nice people and write some cool music. And it's never going to happen. The last time I played in a 'proper' band I was 17. I adored that band but I had to move to another town and had to leave the band. I've never got past the 'Yeah, we should totally do something!' phase, since. My gear as listed on my MySpace page: Cort T35 Aria Pro II, Magna series Mab 20/5 Wesfield 4 string Peavey T-Max 500 Behringer Bass V-Amp Pro Peavey 410TX 4x15" cabs Dean Cadillac SE Cort headless Flying V Boss GX-700 Zoom GFX-707 Laney Linebacker 100 BMA stereo 500 Encore acoustic Fender Banjo An old classical Mahalo Ukulele I am a Bass player, it's what I started as and it's what I love. The other stuff is just for messing about with. My gear isn't brilliant but I have never been able to warrant spending a lot of money on it. I would if I could find an excuse/band. As soon as I can get my wits together for long enough to learn how to use the programs I intend to do some recording myself. Well, that's me. Nice to meet you.
Welcome aboard, that's some pretty long list of gear for a self confessed living room bassist. It's good here, loads of nice people and loads of info.
