U bass is a great instrument much underrated, mine is an Excelsior made in England, finding a string you like can be problematic, Aquila Thunderblacks are my choice but still not entirely happy, keep some baby talc handy for the strings. 3 of my 4 baritones are Kala, the other is an experiment made from bits which will be replaced by a custom built instrument later this year but I'm not sure what you'd call it other than 'different' 😀

I also have an 8 string baritone, so 4 baritones and bass for now. Erindors is after an 8string tenor to add to her gorgeous Excelsior standard tenor

I picked up my 1st uke exactly a year ago, it was a tenor, then tried a baritone DGBE much more to my liking and a more comfortable size for me, then started learning with a uke group but everything is arranged for reentrant gCEA tuning which makes playing along on a baritone a real PITA got a second baritone to tune GCEA,. always prefer bass so got a Uke bass lovely to play but finding decent string's was a 'mare EADG. Recently had an idea at 3am on morning so got a mate to cobble together a cheap baritone with EADG tuning an octave up from base and stick an under saddle pickup in - love it, lets me noodle away in bass tuning, either conventional bass lines or I can play a melody below the chord rhythm, so the concept works, going to get one custom built later this year with a few mods and tweaks.

This is my take, as a total noob with no ability or experiwenc at all and after re-reading the OP with due care and attention Tribute - note perfect Cover - near enough Anyone else suit the band/occasion I mean a Lemmy style bass line isn't going to work at a Derby and Joan club do is it, unlikely to be enough defibrillators for a start experiwenc where the hell did that come from?

Must add I'm only workng in a duo towards doing open mic, so one song in particular I've kind of merged a couple of parts into a bass line.

If I'm doing the main vocals the bass line is dumbed right down, sometimes we have a song I've never heard of before, every youtube vid is different and there's no tabs so I make it up, sometimes I just don't like the original. I really am a noob. I work out the tempo/rhythm, then learn the melody, then sing it and work out a bass to it, then try few tweaks.

I'm strictly a rank amateur, (emphasis on RANK), BUT that doesn't mean I don't work damned hard work hard to be the best I can be and keep working on it until they're nailing down the lid. I know my limitations but get huge joy from putting together some really cool riffs now and again. I really enjoy coming up with possible bass lines to stuff often quite different take to the original. I'd probably drive a covers band nuts, fortunately my playing pal puts up with my idiosyncrasies. I'm improving and learning all the time but that just leads me even further 'off-piste', so I can't even call myself a piste artist

Think the problem is they take up a large portion of any room in a modern house. A lovely thing if you have the house room though, my gran was one of Brinsmeads, there's one of their grands in my late uncle's house but that's a Georgian mansion in Kent.

No-one in particular, always been drawn to the low end, granddaughter starting to learn bass at school booted my donkey to dig mine out of the back of the wardrobe and make a good go of learning to play it. Jane Buckley playing Uke bass in a 'Touch of Purple' concert confirmed I'd made the right decision, to me that bass underpinning everything elevated the concert from OK to outstanding. I think that everyone wanting to play guitar probably pointed me towards bass anyway as I'm a contrary bugger and bass is 'different'.

I'd never bother with any 'we buy..........' guarantee you'll be insulted I do like to browse round guitarguitar on the very rare occasions I'm in Glasgow though. Works out well, I get to drool over basses while missus checks out keys and gets a faraway misty look at the thought of a grand piano.

I've noticed the tendons on the back of my right hand for the ring and pinky fingers can get a wee bit stiff and sore. I use an ointment called Joint Ace if I'm going to be doing a lot of strumming, put it on about an hour before, rub it well in then rub off the excess as it can get a little gunky on the fingers, I've also started to wear 'silk' gloves out of mountain warehouse outside, especially when I'm travelling to where I'm going to be playing. I'm also being more diligent about warming up, usually just some scales and arpeggios.

Yeah I know but I've got 2 projects on the go currently and have been thinking of trading my Taylor Mini in for full scale fretless electro which is why I looked in on this thread. This kind of thing just encourages me and gives my missus another reason to roll her eyes and take the P.

Good luck, hope it works out. I'll be meeting with a Luthier next month about a couple of projects, 1 should be pretty straight forward, the other not so.
