Have always aspired to either vocals or bass, made a decision just over a year ago to start learning to play bass was making decent progress but it's come to a grinding halt while we pack up and prepare to move house. Instruments will be the last to move, not looking forward to shifting erindors's 'grand' keyboard. Good thing is the music room will be on the ground floor next to the kitchen so handy for endless coffee 😁

I play bass and baritone Uke, reckon I've only got 4 fingers so that's plenty of strings for me to cope with. I do follow guitar video lessons but mentally adapt them to suit, what I learn for one helps the other, especially the theory stuff. I do lean towards bass though.

If you tune the 1st D and G strings an octave higher it'll be the same tuning as an 8 string Baritone Ukulele - really nice full chords. I'd be tempted to try an octave lower just to see what that sounds like, though the might sound a bit muddy.

Bass that arrived between Christmas and New Year has just gone for de-fretting and one of my baritone ukes has just been electro'd which I don't think count, otherwise I'm still OK for now might even last until June - bigger amp and custom uke type thing planned.

Not sure keys add much to that. Erindoors says she'd condescend to do keys if her palm was crossed with enough GOLD so she could quit her day job.

wow didn't know there was so much out there, thanks folks. The Tascam GB10 looks good, compact, can alter speed, loop and the controls look as if even I could use it, I can even record on it so I don't forget the stuff I've just worked out or noodled up (came up with the start to a bluesy bass line this morning, started tabbing it then gave up in frustration, so it'll be gone by tomorrow🙄) Just need software that'll turn my noodling into tabs 😆

The cube has some effects and I've got 3 pedals so far, wah, tremelo and chorus, might get an octave which is plenty for me to be going on with.

It's after a lot of trial and effort, I can't read music, I can manage tabs but find it tiring and tedious as I keep losing my place, fortunately I do seem seem to find learning by ear fairly easy. That bass buddy/ipad/headphone set up looks like it could be the answer.

Thanks, everyone, looks like I need to seek out a lead to link the playing device to the amp, probably the cube street which is OK for practice. Need to add a bigger amp anyway which leaves me 2 to trade in against something louder, I'm thinking Fender or Blackstar. Haven't decide on the device yet, moving house sometime this year and will be setting up a music room, definitely getting a desktop but thinking about something smaller/handier for practice. Lots to think about, we've got sheet music and tabs lying all over the place which needs sorted and stored, I just need a shelf, erindoors needs something about the size of the British Library.

OK I know it's probably a pretty dumb question and probably in the wrong section but then I'm pretty dumb anyway. I'm finally finding out that I learn best by ear but being a techno-dunce I could do with some advice. I'm looking to practice playing along with tracks by putting them through my amp, 1. What is the most cost effective way of playing it so I can pause/rewind/repeat without a load of faffing around? 2.I'm planning on downloading tracks to a memory stick? is that the best option 3. Can I get a lead from whatever device I play it on into the input jack on the amp? Presumably from the headphone socket on the device? words of one syllable aimed at a complete moron would be appreciated, thanks. please be gentle

Thankfully our duo isn't not a tribute or covers band went through Star of County Down for the first time yesterday ended up going with a hollowed out melody. Also worked on Caledonia, ever heard it played Calypso style? Neither had I until yesterday, actually I reckon it'll wok with a bit of work, certainly different 😁

No matter how I look I keep coming back to the Ibanez SR body quite different sounds, which I put down to the pickups. The 400 on the left is heading to a luthier at the weekend to be de-fretted.
