  1. various versions of The Star of County Clare, sprung on me towards the end of today's practice session, we'd covered a lot of stuff , started noodling and were running out of time Do you know The Star of County Down Eh, what, never heard of it, (I was starting to pack up) Its Irish folk OK what's it sound like then? Given a short couple of verses of chords vocal What do you think? Sounds OK reaches for Uke bass and starts tinkering with the melody See, you've got it nailed already (big grin) and hardly anyone plays it at open mics and things Soo I guess that's another one added to the set list that I need to scratch around and find/learn a bass line for, have to admit it is a nice song with a simple chorus but we do seem to be sliding towards folk/country so this one fits nicely
  2. Definitely the latter, I prefer the description a primary teacher gave "David has a butterfly mind, it flits from flower to flower but never settles on one for long". God bless you Miss McCulloch
  3. Another night of little sleep.....however at around 3am I had what to me is a revelation, an epiphany (appropriate) I'd been thinking about what/how I would work things today as I'll probably be stuck waiting somewhere for a tradesman to come and do something. I was lamenting having to choose which instrument to lug around with me when it came to me, I have 4 instruments in one 1 strings 3456 are tuned EADG - Bass 2 strings 1234 are tuned DGBE - Baritone Uke 3 capo at 5th fret strings 1234 are GCEA - Tenor/Concert/Soprano Uke 4 or I could just leave it as it is - Guitar I know its comes under the heading of the Bleedin' obvious, for my next move I may even stop breathing through my mouth and talking out of my @rse Just thought I'd share 🙄
  4. Just a suggestion, but maybe if you work on fingering the G string you'll be allowed to plug yourself in.
  5. A lot of it is showmanship, trying to stand out from the crowd. I've fallen in love with Steam Punk as a concept, but then I rate Art Deco as well, Imagine my joy when I discovered Steam Punk bands actually exist! The mind boggles!!
  6. I was paying attention to the DB player last night and thinking that looks fun/interesting and how it underpins even an orchestral piece, then coming my senses and thinking I'd better learn to play what I've got first, anyway it looks a hell of a lump to cart around. I humbly bow down at the feet of DB players. Bowed strings are yet another voicing, I know you can get pedals but they don't come close.
  7. Definitely need at least one of each, waiting to send an SR400 to be defretted, SR800 is staying fretted, mostly I prefer fretless. I may have to add a fretless acoustic one day.
  8. Elly La Roux, They've got better numbers IMHO.
  9. lack of any trace of brow ridges I'd guess female.
  10. Really enjoyed the SCO concert tonight, discovered a new composer - Lumbye Next year's tickets will be booked as soon as they go on the market.
  11. Tonight I will be listening to the Scottish Chamber Orchestra - Grieg, Nielsen and Strauss, somehow erindors has got a couple of tickets to the posh seats, Grieg has always one of my favourites, she prefers Strauss
  12. Not got a solid body Uke but have 3 baritones (Kala) and a bass (Excelsior), strings have been the biggest challenge especially for the bass which I've settled for the Thunderblacks, still room for improvement if aquila/worth et.al are reading this and baby talc is an essential part of playing Uke bass. If I was going for a solid body I'd probably speak to Solwayer http://www.solwayerguitars.co.uk/jazzukebass.html
  13. off next door to see the New Year in Happy and Prosperous New year to all
  14. NOOOoooo! I'm only just getting over a childhood when I was dragged by the child minder off to the Liceum to see Andy Live. Dashing White Sergeant is so White Heather Club and Moira Anderson. With Andy it has to be Donald whuar's yer troozers (even has a translated bit for the English and even a verse in 'Elvis' or the Muckin' o' Geordies Byre (The Cleansing of Georges Cow Shed for uncivilised southerners) Seriously worth a listen for a giggle, go on you know you want to. Scared the crap out of a tourist when I burst into a verse of 'Troozers, my excuse was I was looking at a bottle of Talisker which is distilled on Skye.
  15. I was brought up being told if you can't say anything nice, so " "
  16. Neck is Walnut/Maple Fretboard is Jatoba, having the Frets replaced with Maple so should be good Body is Quilted Maple/Nyatoh
  17. I'll put some 'final' pics up when it's ready to go, probably in about a month. I've got a set of flats ready to fit as soon as it gets back from the luthier.
  18. done, complete with crap pictures
  19. Latest addition arrived, unpacked, checked over and ready to send on to a luthier for de-fretting, final step will be to fit flats. Very nice to play, very growly to start with but quickly seemed to settle down so did a complete run through of my version of a bassline to 'Ride On'. Like it a lot, looking forward to playing it in anger. For now I'm just sitting looking at it thinking F~CK thats nice, even the missus likes it. Thankfully she's a keys player but has been known to pick up other instruments. Sorry for the picture quality
  20. Final purchase of 2019 arrived today, arrived almost in tune, seemed to take a bit of time to settle down but nice to play. Now to put it in it's nice new case and send it off to a luthier to be de-fretted, then put some flats on it to end up with my dream machine and putting an end to any GAS in 2020.
  21. New Bass just arrived, a little bit before I was expecting given the time of year. Unpacked, tuned and played with. All good Thumbs Up to DV247.
  22. .....and the day started with such promise 🙄
  23. Oh BU66ER!! You mean that no matter what the instrument I'll still SUCK? What am I supposed to do with the new bass that's coming today?😱
