  1. Sounds synth to me, just about everything else was props as far as I could see and the figures on the screen were slightly out of out of synch. Makes me glad I forgot about this annual cringe fest.
  2. Keeping an eye on this thread, hoping to make it. Ibanez SR800 and Excelsior Uke.
  3. I'll try, you're safe until July I think. Anyway I'm only after a 5 string and a good amp. Mind you last time I was in there I got a bit carried away 😛 Simandl, had to go and check what I actually do, I vary technique depending on where I am on the neck with sometimes a little shift IM(minishift)RP frets 12-34
  4. My cunning plan is to head up to Glasgow (guitarguitar) try various ideas out and probably fork out some dosh as I definitely need a new bass amp. The other notion - of actually joining a band is down to fate - my mind is open, if it happens.......I'll be up front and professional in my attitude.
  5. This got me thinking, my next bass will be a 5 string so I looked into a shorty and while not mutually exclusive a 5 string shorty isn't exactly a match made in heaven which has kind of made my mind up for me. I can definitely see the advantages of a shorty though. On the other hand I'm thinking that a 5er played from the 5th fret gives effectively me a shorter instrument with low B,C & D if and when I need them.
  6. Like to think fairly eclectic from Bach to Appalachian Folk. Easier to say I'm NOT into cRAP please use your hoods as a gag, Death Metal take some Gaviscon, Operatic singers get over yourselves and down a gallon of scrumpy you'll sound a lot less like you've got a poker up your @rse. Other than that I'm pretty chilled.
  7. This thread was posted before I even started learning bass. Don't understand it myself but I now have 2 electric, 1 acoustic and 1 Uke basses. I expect to add 5 string later this year. Is there no hope for me? I'm only a bedroom bassist FFS. I have a few instruments I'll move on either sell or quite possibly give to a grandchild, but no way anyone is getting one of my basses. My oldest granddaughter is planning to do music at her new school in 5th and 6th year, her brother has nicked her guitar but she quite likes the idea of bass, should I try to dissuade her from this path to ruin? She can nick her dad's old bass and I'll get her a little Vox bass amp to spare the village. I already have one bass playing granddaughter.
  8. Yeah, even just sitting on their stands the fretless looks longer but I've had the tape measure out and they're exactly the same. The fretted was the 'ah feck it' purchase that got me into this whole bass thing in the first place. I'm still trying to become good enough to do it justice.
  9. Finally got my now fretless back last week
  10. Not really got a dog in this fight but just before lockdown I was working towards my first open mic night. As things have gone on I feel I have improved and gained in confidence to the point of being able to hold the low end up and could be persuaded to gig. In fact I'm growing keener as time goes on. I would expect the 3 local jams (that I know of) to restart fairly quickly. Paid gigs - I don't think it'll be long there's a whole backlog of weddings and stuff that have been put on hold.
  11. I will be paying a visit to guitarguitar Glasgow, think I've bought 2 basses and 1 guitar off them so far (before lockdown). I'll be calling in again to annoy the feck out of them to try out 5ers and amps. May well take my fretless to see if a different amp can make it sound more civilised instead of a bear with piles, that's just woken from a long hibernation.
  12. There's an annual BG festival just a couple of miles up the road from me, reckon I may just be able to join in the evening jams, especially if it skips this year.
  13. Such an ear opener, I'm lost somewhere down a Pentatonix rabbit hole.
  14. Wow, probably the best acapella I've heard since the Flying Pickets.
  15. Funny you should say that, the guy who dropped my fretless off yesterday suggested that he has an instrument he was thinking of giving me as (or was it for) a charitable contribution - a fretted, Bamboo, Uke Bass, it's 'B' grade (couple of fine cracks near the tuner block but all fixed) but. "It'll really nice, fun and complement your other (fretless) Uke bass". Why then am I thinking, hmmm?
  16. I'd agree for all that the opinion of a relatively new bedroom bassist matters. My visual preference is the Ibanez SR range, and they seem to suit me, I have a fretted and a fretless 4s, I plan to add a 5er later this year, maybe next and will probably go for another Ibanez but I'll need to travel a bit so I can try them out mainly so I cxan see how the fretboard suits my left hand Strings are another area where it's totally down to personal preference, Bass and Guitar strings everyone and their dog has an opinion. Uke bass strings you're on you're own, after a lot of experimenting I've finally settled on Aquila Thunderblacks and am still not entirely satisfied with the 'E' but I prefer it, by a long way, over anything else. I bow down in worship before anyone who knows anything about cabs amps, pups, EQs or any of the technical stuff. I know I could do to upgrade my amp/cab whatever but haven't really got a clue where to start.
  17. Surprised by just how many BCers tuned in last night going by the comments this morning. Didn't think Mark Egan was looking too well.
  18. Found it really worthwhile as much for their outlook/attitudes as anything else what a wonderful bunch of people. Agree the round/flat consensus took me a little by surprise. My fingers are safe for now. Todays practice session will be to try and get my fretless to talk nicely to the amp. Failing that I'll be in the market for a new amp.
  19. Perfect timing, my most recent bass purchase should be arriving late that morning after being away at the luthier's for over a year having it's frets removed. I will either draw inspiration or become depressed and chop my fingers off.
  20. Guy I was practising with is bringing my latest bass over a week tomorrow, hopefully we can fit a jam in and maybe start getting things together towards an open mic. I know my playing has improved over the lock-down, could be interesting. It'll just be really nice to have company.
  21. Opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one but in my a-hole's opinion both versions are sh!t but at least you can tell what Stravinsky was trying to do.
  22. flip!! just looked at the price 😱 oh well it was a nice dream while it lasted.
  23. Have decided to bite the bullet and get a 5er later this year, am currently drooling over the SR5005 unless someone tells me to get a grip and that they're cr@p and as I'm currently only a bedroom bassist I really don't need one.
  24. Utterly meaningless on electrics. On acoustics on the other hand the wood does make a noticeable difference and I prefer Acacia, just a personal preference.
