  1. I think this is a real problem - the wood is stiffer, and like anything rigid it is less tolerant to stress as it can't bend. I have a USACG roasted maple neck which cracked exactly that way when it was built up, and then repaired with bond-tite. It does have a lot of positives - stiff, bright, stable - looks gorgeous! I don't want to bring up the whole 'tone wood' thing, but if you're of the school of thought that says a big heavy neck is good for tone then obviously roasting the moisture out of it is going to reduce that effect.
  2. I somewhat agree, but having spent too long building websites my feeling is that it should all be about the content - and they have some great content! I'd rather be oggling a hi rez gallery of a 70's stingray than struggling with a system that looks like it was built in 1996!
  3. It seems amazing that they don't just get a proper website with, like a connection to their stock. The number of times I've ordered something then to be told it's out of stock is silly. I can kind of understand things like strings (even though everyone else manages it), but more expensive stuff like pickups and bridges? In the end I decided to just shop elsewhere for parts. They could probably just use an out of the box system and get a better looking, more usable working site than what they have.
  4. Totally agree! Only thing is that if you're after a particular P sound - like from the 70's then the pickup is, as you say, much fuller range. I've been messing around trying out different P pickups and if you just want to plug it in and have 'that sound' then much as I like my cutlass (it's within arms reach!) it's not apples for apples comparison.
  5. I came for the electronics nerdery but stayed for the wood! You're making me consider a lot of things that I'd toyed with coming from the modular synth world but haven't really followed through on - filter slopes and opamps!
  6. I don't want to come over all hippie, but I think there is a wholistic effect that is the sum of wood, finish, electronics, setup, playing etc. Obviously somethings are going to have more effect than others and somethings won't make a real difference until some fundamentals are sorted. Doesn't mean that they don't all pertain!
  7. If you did get it re-finished would this be a case where the application of some steam to the affected area might re-inflate the fibres and remove the dent? After it had been sanded and before refin of course. I've not tried it but seen that suggested in other situations.
  8. You missed 'vomit', but I can see why! I have a couple of basses and they all sound different but good except a bitsa MM with a great roasted maple USACG neck with stiffeners that should, on paper, sound great: Alder Warmoth body, East preamp, Nordstrand pickup. Looks great, plays well, but everytime I play I it I come away dissapointed with the sound (honky and inarticulate) - in some ways it sounds worse than the Peavey Forum bass I'm currently failing to sell at the price of the Nordy pickup on it's own! I'm having to admit that the parts just aren't gelling!
  9. Is it another of your PCB's? looks great! How does it sound?
  10. It does look great - love the colour and styling. Wunjo on Denmark Street don't set up basses as they come in, but instead provide a setup as part of a 3 month gaurantee - which always seemed incredibly shortsighted for a shop selling £2k basses, so I'm not that suprised - I guess it makes sense in a way - mainly financial.
  11. I'm currently thinking straight up Jaguar style + a Wal style blob to accomodate the switches. Need to do some paper protyping.
  12. Knobs arrived after getting lost for a month in the North London christmas post black hole: Just waiting for a lost batterybox and to cut the pickguard
  13. Wow the one at bass direct looks the business:
  14. How it sounds (for me) is more important than how it looks - I really like the LP filter per pickup approach as EQ can really mess up a sound in my opinion making it smeary where simply removing frequencies feels cleaner to me. For me the aim of the electronics would be to let the sound of the pickup/wood interaction sing through as much as possible. Personally I'd go with the lower dB per octave slopes as I think you might find that the steeper slopes really colour the sound - but who's to say that is a bad thing? Not me! The one I have tops out somewhere above 4K and I think that really works as you still geta lot of the snap and buzz from the string but not too much of the string noise from higher up. It's a tricky balance - thanks for the research and figures on the different versions - most enlightening! The only worry with this LP filter set up is that I can see some bad amp accidents happening with a big resonant peak smashed out at very low frequency - people never let you forget it if you blow their bass bins!
  15. Congratulations! That looks great - lovely grain! The only thing ever wanted was to add a single coil option as the MFDs are so strong!
  16. I put one in a bass - I really like it, but I'm not sure it'd get you where you want to go when you're talking mids as it's a pure lowpass with a switch to increase the resonant peak. Don't get me wrong - it's kind of perfect for me, but if I'm reading you right might not provide enough adjustment for you? Alan was saying here that he has some of his EQ-01 :
  17. I’ve had a bit of an overdrive/distortion problem in the past. I really want to build the trans-drive!
  18. Did you ever try the maestro bass fuzz? I'm not saying it'll be your perfect OD becasue it sounds so crazy, but it has a transformer and sounds pretty neat.
  19. You're killing it with the overdrive pedals! I'm enjoying your work and wish I had your skills! I spent a lot of time building various overdrive/distortion pedals in a quest for the perfect (to me) 303 overdrive sound and they are all so different - a fascinating area.
  20. Yeah, it's kind of as if instead of a delorean you used a model T to house the time machine!
  21. I know - but it's super cool to see it in action! The closest I ever got was overdriving my bass out into a square wave and then using that to drive the sync input of a VCO - it worked but it wasn't pretty! It looks like a great system.
  22. Amazing tracking - thanks for the video!
  23. It's suprisingly un-technical underneath those pickups. Like Cuzzie says, just foam or springs - I'd guess that you have foam underneath and you'll just need to loosen off the strings unscrew the pickups and furtle around underneath until the foam is in a better postition. Once it's in place it doesn't really move around much.
  24. That is beautiful! There is the prototype on there too - https://reverb.com/uk/item/1636165-travis-bean-tb2000-prototype-0-1974 14 pounds!
