  1. Usually play old covers, and modern Christian songs in the church band, but have played a couple of times in a ceilidh band. One occasion was at a wedding where the bride was from Japan,, and all the calls had to be repeated in Japanese....
  2. Many thanks, lots of food for thought. Must now persuade Mrs B that I have to buy another bass before I sell any of mine. Unfortunately I think the EB3 will be first to go as it is the heaviest.
  3. As I’m getting older, I’m finding all my basses to be uncomfortably heavy: they are an Epiphone EB3, an old Marlin Sidewinder and a 335-style semi-acoustic. I borrowed an Ibinez last week, so much lighter and more comfortable, so apart from this, any suggestions for a fretted 4-string please, not going mad price-wise! Thanks in advance Malcolm
  4. And welcome from another church bass player. Had to jump in last Sunday at the last minute as the rota'd bassist couldn’t make it. Had to use borrowed gear, and two new songs I didn’t know. Thank goodness for OnSong and iPads!
  5. Didn’t realise he’d sung (?) this. Now I’ve heard (as much as I could stand of) it I’m glad I didn’t. Truly awful version.
  6. Hearing a recording of your own playing, for me at least, is like hearing your own speaking voice on a recording, not at all like it sounds like 'from inside'! Add to that the only recordings we make are at rehearsal in our cabin, and only on a phone, and mainly just to get the arrangement and timing right, rather than sound quality. So the playing always sounds cr*p......
  7. That Jona Lewie Cavalry thing rolled out every Christmas Any Rap Phil Collins' version of Groovy Kind of Love - why? I’m sure he sings a bum note, at least compared with the Mindbenders' version.
  8. This morning I could have said I was going to see Albert Lee tonight, but as I’ve just arrived home after the show, I can’t! But as always he was brilliant. i wish I could delve into his address book, the number of people he has worked with.
  9. For some reason I couldn’t add to the quote in my post above, so here goes! Joe Brown, commenting on this topic, claims to have advised Marty Wilde, instead of singing "Why must I be a teenager in love", to sing "Why CAN'T I be ...etc"
  10. On the same night last year I saw Herman’s Hermits (only the drummer was original). The Fortunes (as far as I could tell no originals) and The Foundations, with one original member who lived locally rejoining them, and a very early replacement lead singer, so almost an original. But the best band of the evening was The New Amen Corner, obviously none of the original A C, but performing their songs.
  11. I thought this was another 'show us your rig' thread......😇
  12. And for me. All 3 of mine, my EB3, P-bass copy, and 335-style semi are well polished ultra gloss piano black - the semi-acoustic and the EB3 also have black necks and fretboards, the latter is even strung with black tapewounds. So I suppose my favourite colour for a bass is black........
  13. For me, it’s the whole arrangement and atmosphere, particularly on the live 'Party at the Palace' concert album of 2002 which makes it a classic (IMNSHO!)
  14. Another vote for Joe Cocker for best, but the worst version of 'a little help from my friends'? Sorry to say, but The Beatles' original. Sounds like a 'SingalongaMax' treatment (there’s one for the oldies!) in comparison.
  15. Didn’t John Rostill's Burns Bison "Shadows" Bass have a scroll head? As did Marvin's ana Welch's guitars?
  16. My apologies, nothing was further from my mind. Malcolm
  17. Great track! Big article about Blue Mink (he was a member) in the DM yesterday. Apparently Melting Pot is now banned as racist, because of the descriptions of various nationalities, notwithstanding it was about unifying the many races.
  18. Can’t help but feel sorry for the Tornadoes' drummer - doesn’t get a chance to mime...
  19. Particularly as the luthier said at outset that he wouldn’t do anything about the buckle rash etc as to do so "it wouldn’t be your father's bass". Then he puts the ashtrays on, when it was clear from the Hot Chocolate video clip that it didn’t have them.
  20. Our church band has subs at both venues, so I play through the PA, but with individual in-ears mix. I only have a practice amp, so it’s a good job!
  21. According to this, I almost gave away my almost spotless Squier P-bass last year for £140!
  22. Welcome from me as well, at the other end of Herts, and another "mature" member. I agree with FB, you'll learn (and spend) lots. But FB mentioned Brexit..........😇 Malcolm
  23. I’ve already admitted (on another thread) that I recently bought a Sidewinder, it actually gives me a more comfortable playing position than either my EB3 or my semi-acoustic. Bought via eBay from a local charity for £40, and once I’d tightened the truss rod to remove the slight bow, it’s fine.
  24. I had the same BFBO moment when I first played my cheapo eBay purchase Marlin (P style), Both my EB3 and my 335 shape basses were a big stretch, and became uncomfortable to my back and shoulder after a while, but the Marlin's bridge and strap button positions meant it sits several inches further right, bringing the headstock much closer in for a more comfortable playing position. Trouble is, I prefer the other two!
