1. I appreciate I may well be in the minority but I just don't get Ed Sheeran. Every song is the same old wishy washy dreary generic amble. It doesn't work for me. There have been some great sets, The Sherlocks stand out to me as one to watch, Royal Blood set the place alive and I like the Foo Fighters but appreciate they were doing what they do (what else would they do?).
2. Might be worth keeping an eye on eBay for second hand flight cases for other things, big keyboards, cabs, stuff like that jumps to mind. Then you could foam them out within an inch of their lives. Will be expensive to get on the plane though I think.
3.
I got it and also had the steroid shot- choosing the right doctor is critical as you're only allowed three in any one area in your lifetime I got my first from a surgeon in my wrist and it was spot on. Second in my elbow was from a visiting trainee GP - not encouraging you'd think - she was nervous but absolutely nailed it Don't rest it, keep working it gently
Not sure where you heard that but I have had more than three in several places, perhaps it was in a year? One of my knees has had seven over a ten year period (seems to like one about every 14- 16 months!). Agree on the differing quality of the people doing it. All my recent ones, except fingers, have been done with the aid of unltrasound and that seems to make a massive difference as I guess they can be that much more accurate.
4. I have a nasty form of inflammatory arthritis, I have had all sorts over the years including many steroid injections. They are undeniably painful but if they are too painful then you probably didn't need them. I have had them when I have been in absolute agony and know when I need them myself now. One in my spine was a bit of an ordeal BUT I had had six weeks of barely being able to walk or even move. I had the injection on a Thursday and was back in work the next Monday. Others have had less effect. Sometimes you need multiple times, I had three in a year on my shoulder and then it settled. See it as a couple of minutes pain for long term gain. There are multiple types of medication that can help as well but obviously that would be best discussed with your consultant. Gentle exercise (and help from a physio) can make a massive difference. I started playing the bass as it was a positive way to do my daily hand exercises and that has worked well. Good luck, hope it works well for you.
5. I can't wait to see them in Nottingham later in the year, should be a good night if Glastonbury is anything to go by.
6.
sometimes you just have to admit that nothing beats leather for such things Just remember the animal was already gonna die for it's meat, the leather is a by product. And if it wasn't killed for it's meat it never would have been born. I know this won't sit with a vegan but it's the truth. Is anyone making hemp straps?
I am not vegan so can't speak for all vegans by any stretch but I think the issue is the fact that animals are bred, kept in often poor conditions and then killed in often inhumane ways just to put a steak on the table so to speak. I don't think many vegans would see the short lives they have as an offset for this hence the veganism. It doesn't sit well with most meat eaters, but it's the truth (speaking from meat eating point of view it sits badly with me which is why I am careful where I source food and eat meat sparingly - I am just a crap vegetarian really). Another vote for couchstraps- https://www.couchguitarstraps.com/guitar-straps/seat-belt-and-woven-guitar-straps/all-plain-black-vegan-strap-guitar.html They are very good but not sure if they will send direct to the UK, I picked up a couple when I was over there visiting last year.
7.
Can't listen to them since the quack played them during my last colonoscopy.
I hope it wasn't 'are you getting the best, the best, the best, the best of me......'
8. I loved the set personally, I am not a massive fan (don't have any of their albums) but have always liked them. DG knows how to engage with a crowd unlike some who seem oblivious to the fact that anyone is watching them. It's never the same watching at home, you just don't get any atmosphere.
9. I have even run a mig welder off mine :-) you can hear it dip and then pick up (the spot welder is too much for it though), a bass rig is a lot less on a pull on a genny than most people think.
10.
I disagree a little. His voice is better than it was in the latter years of Oasis, but his backing band are pretty average and was it just me or was he reading the lyrics of an autocue?
Really? He was worse before? I am genuinely shocked. I thought he was reading it but dismissed it on the grounds 'he couldn't be'. He seemed to be a bit out of it in the interview afterwards. Foo fighters are awesome as always though.
11. I have done it a couple of times with a 500w rig and smaller generator than that with no issues.
12. Just watching the Glastonbury coverage and Liam Gallagher is just terrible. I have to admit I was not a big oasis fan but they were ok pop songs for their time, but tonight he is just not there. He is 'singing' as though he has never heard the song before.
13.
Agreed, playing music was never mass market. But I think fewer kids today dream of being a rock star.
I think as many dream of it but fewer are prepared to put in the required effort, hence the popularity of programs such as X factor.
14.
Several good points here. I remember when we were 16, 17 years old crowding into The Filmore East to see all the great underground rock bands of the era. Now young people are completely disconnected from the rock I know and love. Must be the way my Dad felt when he realized big bands were never going to make a come back. Blue
The odd thing is that if you put a Queen song in the kids all know it, if you put some chart stuff on from ten years ago they haven't got a clue. I don't think kids are disconnected around here at all. I was in a minority growing up as I was into the sex pistols and iron maiden when my mates were listening to Duran Duran, nothing much has changed from what I can see.
15.
Are they interested in live music or the electric guitar? Blue
Very much both, we have two bands and about a dozen more individuals. The bands are both five piece in traditional line up of drums, bass, 2x six string and vocalist. The dozen individuals are four bass players, seven six stringers and another vocalist, no more drummers mostly due to lack of spare kit. We have to limit numbers, we could have more kids but couldn't fit them all out with equipment but are gradually building stuff up. We alternate over two days as it is. Both bands were involved in a charity event locally on Thursday and played short sets. All of them are 12-15 years old. Locally the live music scene is very active, a lot of covers bands but a lot of young originals bands as well. The non mainstream music around here is split between dance (non guitar) and rock/ alternative (guitar based) ,apologies for the simplification, and is biased very heavily in favour of the rock/ alternative. Most of the dance stuff seems to be geeks in their bedrooms on an iPad.
16. Nah, they just last a long time. There may be an issue with some youngsters wanting quick and easy game style satisfaction but the club I help run for kids is one small example of how kids are still getting involved in live music. The Internet also makes learning a hell of a lot easier than it used to be,
17. Nope, if I don't like it I don't buy it. There are very few bands where I have everything they have done and then it's usually because didn't do very much!
18. Mine just fits across the back seat of an old 3 series estate, but it's not a Gibson case. It won't fit in the boot with the seats up whereas the Fender one will on a diagonal.
19.
Mine too, unfortunately, especially as I got a new Barefaced cab today! But I do need a backup! My Fender's just can't do what the T Bird does.
Just used my precision for the first time after getting the Thunderbird, the sound just doesn't compare! GLWTS OP, sorry for hijacking the thread!
20. So far: Don't look back in anger I can't explain - The Who Bad Moon Rising Two princes All the small things Mollys lips It was only a short after work practice so well pleased with those, have a good few more to go at next week and all set for the weekend after. Thanks everyone!
21. Just had this months copy of the bass magazine delivered, there is an advert for Chowny basses and one looks like a rick copy (head is different, but body is rick), how do they get away with that based on JH's approach?
22.
Will you let us know which tunes you end up agreeing on please? Just for fun.
Will do, l think it will be the ones above plus a few others tbc. There are some others on the list (like the Kinks) that we have messed with before anyway so will chuck in. We also have a running joke on rockin in the free world which our lead guitarist loves and even though it's not in the set we randomly break into it during rehearsals for a laugh, so maybe we'll include that as well if needed.
23.
I blame Bass websites for feeding my GAS when I gigged from 1980 to 1997 I only ever had one bass and one amp. When either wasn't good enough for me I traded up. Now, thanks to TB and BC forums, after taking bass up again in 2009, I have 5 basses, two guitars, two bass amps, two cabs etc etc Last Friday I went in to a local shop to buy a new cable. He had an SX Jazz Bass in black........ I still have 5 basses....because I bought that SX and gave my SX shorty to my bandmate's two teenagers to jam with their dad, they are both multi talented, sax, piano, guitar, keys, drums, and now bass. At least I donated one of them hehe. I blame YOU, people of BassChat ! PS the new Jazz is a Standard Series, so entry level, $290AU. It plays like butter, super slim neck. Pickups are passable, certainly no worse than those in my $900 MIM Jazz. Definitely my new backup bass but maybe my gigging bass.
This is very true, I fancied a Thunderbird for a while but it was thread on here that got me properly looking, then ad on here appeared and I now have a Gibson I don't really need (bass number 6) but I'm not sorry as it sounds gorgeous. Exposure to stuff doesn't help in lots of ways :-)
24. To be fair they are brilliant, it's just a matter of stuff that takes little arrangement/ no big guitar solos to learn/ no overly complex bass lines. We have just put our first set together and it's got some complex stuff in there but this is just stuff that we can work through quickly and may or may not use again.
