1. I started playing last October, first gigged in December, did a thirty song set on Sunday and have a three hour gig booked soon. I am no bass genius by any stretch but I would be nowhere near the standard I am without having been in a band for most of it. It will give you a reason to learn new stuff and playing with others really focuses the mind and makes a massive difference. As long as you like the people it's also a great way to socialise with like minded people.
2.
How was the Royal Caribbean ship? I'm out on Equinox this coming Sunday for 6 months.
Very very nice, we have done P&O, RC and Princess and it compared very favourably. Food was excellent, ship was great, entertainment was aimed a little towards the American passenger but still good. I did miss the late night comedy club that P&O do though but not a deal breaker. We were on Spendour of the Seas.
3. As the thread is four years old, I wonder if the OP took the offer or not?
4.
We had a chap in school whose name was Robert Sole , poor fella . Our local motorcycle shop is called Dave Deaths Motorcycles ( Triumph and Yamaha dealer )
It's a Welsh name, technically De'ath not death, when I was doing my PhD one of the guys in the chemistry dept was a Dr De'ath, he had heard it a million times and had absolutely no sense of humour at all.
5. I have been (a passenger) on a few cruises. I have seen band members of guest bands and comedians having a drink several times. Had a long chat one night with a comedian after he needed somewhere to sit so joined our table and he had quite a few. But as others have said, every one could be different. One thing not to do is to try and sneak anything on, they all now use airport style scanners so you will be caught. We took a bottle on board a royal Caribbean at the first port and had it confiscated (we hadn't read the rules) and it was returned the last day. They all tend to have a zero tolerance for staff misdemeanour, from what I gather even tiny transgressions see you walking the gangplank at the next port.
6. I have heard 'hit me baby one more time' by Britney Spears done a few times, works surprisingly well as a rock song and takes people a few seconds to work out what it is.
7. As I said, it may be my lack of experience but the 42mm neck just feels fat to me and my fingers don't fall perfectly where I want them to be. It's not a major issue but is noticeable. I can play may of my 38mm necks without thinking but on the precision I need to think about it for a few minutes before it falls in line. The depth of neck seems far less important. Judging by other threads on here I don't think I am the only one with a preference.
8. Just doesn't feel as nice to me, maybe it's my inexperience but the 38mm spacing seems to suit me better. The precision works fine it's just not my 'go to' bass and the spacing is part of that.
9. My precision is noticeably wider, I prefer the 38mm spacing but obviously that's just a personal preference.
10. Played the Gibson in anger for the first time this weekend. My beloved Aria did the first half of the set and the T-bird the second half. There were a couple of bass players in the crowd who spoke to me afterwards and both commented on how much better the second half sounded. The tone is beautiful and cuts through the mix very well. The Aria is lighter and slightly nicer to play but the Gibson is miles ahead soundwise.
11.
Nope, not for me - jazz means as little to me as it did 40 years ago. YMMV, etc, etc...
+1, at the risk of generalising, the little,I know of Jazz seems very self indulgent and, to me, utterly unmoving. I know some people really get off on it but it doesn't do anything for me. We are all different and it would be boring if everyone liked the same stuff.
12. My old Bass, it's a beauty. The colour is hard to catch with a camera, looks great with a bit of light on it.
13. Just got back from an afternoon slot at a local fundraiser. We used it as a chance to try out some new stuff for an upcoming gig and it went very well. Some of the songs we have only run through once but all went well. It was hot though playing outside for two hours and the last couple of songs lacked our usual energy as we were a bit knackered. It went down well and we have been asked if we would do it again next year.
14.
I get what you're saying... and don't get me wrong, I like what they do.. but how he plays bass limits the sound. Personally I think the songs and riffs are being held back by their self chosen limitations! But opinions are like left testicles. Everyone's got one. Apart from women and one balled men.
Surely it should be 'and 50% of one balled men'?
15. I have come across a few at work over the years but sadly can't mention them, one I came across not work related that stuck in my mind was a lad called Dwayne Pipes, to be fair his mother had remarried but you would think they would have stuck with his original name. When I first heard it I thought someone was pulling my leg.
16. We have just had a plug on the local radio for our gig on Sunday, hopefully we will get a decent crowd. Seems strange hearing someone talking about you in that way, never had it before!
17.
Better than my birthday #1 if I remember correctly... bloody banarama
Mine is 'I'd like to teach the world to sing' which oddly I have always hated with an absolute passion, no idea why.
18. Do you know anyone you could just hook with and play with in a no pressure environment? Maybe a few practice/ rehearsal/ jam/ call them what suits best sessions will bring the confidence back. Being a relative beginner Who started gigging after two months I have been amazed that punters will miss mistakes. They are very obvious to us but as long as you start together, nail any breaks and stop together they seem happy as long as they know the songs. We are always our own worst critics. Good luck.
19. In times of financial stress you would think they would at least continue with existing models to get a bit of cash in.
20.
Nothing until November when I get to see Royal Blood and Wolf Alice.
I am seeing Royal Blood in November as well, at Nottingham. I have Placebo before that in October. And a load of bands at the Lichfield free festival next month including my mates last appeareance with his Beatles tribute band.
21.
Without wanting to get into any sort of competition, this is just sublime...ff to about 1:10. It's worth it. https://youtu.be/3O72lItS4OA
One of the few times I have genuinely laughed out loud at a YouTube clip.
22. Not a fire but had a borrowed smoke machine stick on at a rehearsal. The idea was that it would give a quick blast as the curtains opened and we would be stood there with smoke gently moving around our ankles (a bit cheesy but was fun gig so fitted the silly atmosphere). Sadly the switch was dodgy and instead of a three second burst it just stuck on, by the time we had managed to unplug it the entire room was filled. We thought we had got away with it but about ten seconds later the alarm went off and 150 odd people had to evacuate the building. Luckily the boss of the place was very understanding once we explained what happened. Needless to say we didn't use it for the event.
