The Advent of Punk - Good or Bad Thing?
bassmachine2112 replied to Low End Bee's topic in Bass Guitars
Punk was a breath of fresh air which was needed cause music was wallowing at the time. It focused on the tune and not how technicaly advanced the musical skills of the players were. It gave you belief that you could go out and be in a band when it seemed you had to be some gifted musician who had insights into the middle earth and knew elfs and goblins personally. It focused on real issues at the time and was a current social commentary. The great thing was that you could crank a bass up with a right aggressive sound and it done the job. Music come back to the streets.Pub rock started the move with fast short songs with catchy sing a longs. About time something like this happened again and the minds of the young are opened up to ask questions and not just sit back and be force fed pap"it must be good cause it,s on sattelite tv,radio one etc. -
Any thoughts on what they sound like in comparison, wish this underlining thing would go forth and multiply. Are some of them gnarly and growling or spikey, warm and smooth or pleasantly compressed in a nice way. Would be nice to know.

What influences your bass purchases?
bassmachine2112 replied to originalfunkbrother's topic in General Discussion
What a good question. Here,s my take on it-put the kettle on,this might get long.oh and an ashtray if your allowed to mention that nowadays. I got my first bass which was an Avon jazz in white, big long bass.My mate said why do you have old man country and western strings on it-flatwounds I now know.So on went some Rock strings-roundwound and the action went sky high but I got on with it.Nowadays I would tweek the truss rod but ignorance is bliss. I didn,t like the look of it but it sounded quite nice through my stack-voxterion valve amp and a selmer gothic wardroad cab which had a 18" speaker.Got a selmer treble n bass for the big cab. Then punk started-rickenbacker starting calling but I still enjoyed rock so that was a thunderbird then.I went to see the stranglers-black n maple P-bass then. By the time I had saved up £270 for a Ricky they were outa fashion and nobody played them, not even Geddy.I needed a guitar so I traded for a les paul and got an aria for bass moments. I took the plunge and got my Ricky again, not the same one but a new one-why,cause it looked so good in jetglo. Next up was a musicman, ended up with a SUB cause I liked the look better to me with punk leanings than the full on one and saved me some cash. Thunderbird never went away but I shied off with the tails of the headbreak and I wanted one in black. Tracked down a black thunderbird and went to try it out but next to it was an epiphone t-bird pro 4 which looked so good. I tried both out and ended up with the epi-great bass and the head is still attached. Next up will be a black P-bass with maple neck and it will not be a F.Tony Butler signature by vintage looks the favourite at the moment with Wizard thumper in the engine room. Looks -hell yes and they sound great as well as looking the dogs danglers. Here,s a question with no disrespect to anyone-Beyonce or Susan Boyle -
boy your a busy one then,I admire your energy. What about mazda, rca, general electric, brimar, sventla or summit like that.I have a load of these.ecc 83,81,5071 and different things like that including mullard. What do they do tonewise ?

I,ve had this on my SUB along time ago. Check the solder joints where the pins for the jack attach to the circuit board. The solder was cracked, very hard to spot-remedy-resolder the joints. How to stop it happening-don,t pull your lead tight under the strap ,it puts sideways pressure on the jack and cracks the joints.Keep it loose with a decent bit of length. Hope this helps.

How do I get JJ's tone on Nice 'n' Sleazy?
bassmachine2112 replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
Your almost there-p-bass,thumper now all you need is gain loads of it and presence which the thumper has plenty of..When you boost the bass and treble the middle gets scooped-bingo job done. I can get with my musicman as well but plenty of gain. -

I had the same problem. I dropped the pick up down and it helped. The solution for me was to fit a seymour duncan smd 4ds pick up.big growly purring machine now. Purrfect for me -
Go get a Saab plenty of room , good on diesel and you can run over an elk without damaging the car. OR- saw and convert it to two 4x10 cabs very quickly.

Wizard pick up for your P. Give Andy a phone and he,ll sort you out. -
I would shy away from a 15" cab and go for a 2x10 or a 4x10. you don,t lose any bottom end.A lot of people have gone the 15" bottom and ended up smoking them due to the handling capacity imbalance but a lot of people have had no problems, just a thought. I would go for a 2x10 4 ohm cab for portability, flexibility and it,s easier to move a 2x10 around than a 4x10. They are monster amps when you unleash the full 450 watt.

Great basses for the cash and guess what-it sounds like a p-bass. Very happy with mine and would recomend one to anyone.

Vintage do a decent one for the price, even better s/h. They are fine, wilkinson hardware and pick ups.Ideal beater bass for the spitoon pubs.

how to achieve correct nut height
bassmachine2112 replied to bassmachine2112's topic in General Discussion
Thanks for the replies. This was what I was highlighting.Usually it,s the neck relief, saddles ,intonation and bridges that are in the main in the spotlight for setting up a bass or guitar and the nut is overlooked or not even mentioned. I feek that a lot of basses could be set up better and easier with proper nut set ups. Maybe somebody could do a definitive nut set up as a sticky. My way of doing a nut is to put a capo on the third position and look for light under the string at the first fret then tap down on the string and listen for the click and adjust till it almost dissapears. I hope this will help people set up there basses .If I,m doing it wrong then I,d love to know how to do it the right way. -
Hi, I hear all the time about bass set up,things like relief, saddle height, intonation and the like but never how to set up your nut. What is the correct proceedure. how do you measure it and what should it be. I feel it is overlooked. I had a bass which I could hardly fret the F on the E string due to not having hands like vice but luckily it was a brass nut and come off easily when the strings were off.Instead of cutting the slots I dressed the bottom of the nut with a whetstone and by taking a bit off at a time I got a nice playing bass which which no amount of truss rod tweaking could achieve or saddle twiddling. I have hunted high and low for tutorials on this and have found nothing. Is it a black art ?

You might be able to steam the gouge out. Gunmakers use this trick on walnut gun stocks. It makes the wood expand and they sand it back flush. the grain expands in the wood .

I have the head version, great big sound. Get another 4 ohm cab-2x10 or 4x10 and it will push out 450 watt which is big loud.

Hiho had a few days to listen to seymour duncan 4ds. Do I like it-yes. How does it sound-I left my amp set up the same as usual. There is a lot more mids present or the top end is tamer, the glassyness is tamed which can be fierce on the original pup. There is more thump to the sound. There is a lot of growl now which I was after. It is perfect for rock but might not suit everybody. It has the articulation of the original but is not muddy, beefier is the word .It,s hard to put it in words. G string is nice and loud which I never noticed before that it was a little subdued.I had dropped the pick up on the bass side which meant the D string was louder than the G but I must have compensated in my playing by hitting the G harder and the D softer if that makes sense. I have a hipshot detuner and when you go down to D it thumps now. I can,t comment on the 4A version but going by the Duncan website it should be almost the same as the original. Has anybody put a Wizard pick up in a musicman ?.

Great bass sound,Sanberg as well. Is this guy Flea,s bass tutor. Lovely interpretation of the tunes. Well done that man
