  1. Yes all textured and that lovely metal scratchplate which most people abhor. The finish is bullet proof which is a plus for me out gigging cause dings and scratches are a thing of the past, they don,t matter. If you don,t like the paint on the back of the neck, sand it off and wax or oil it. Great bass for live work. Pity some other makers didn,t make gigging finish basses and save us some cash.
  2. you might find this perverse but some of us like the textured finish and utility look of the SUB. It,s the only EBMM I would have due to this. Fabulous basses, just me I don,t like sunbursts or fancy finishes althoug I do have one that I,ve considered painting black on many ocassions and I don,t mind slab bodies either.
  3. Wizard thumper for me. My next one will have a Wizard stealth 51. Give Andy a call and he will give you good advice.
  4. Try an epi pro bass, very good for the money.
  5. Ricks are fitted with schallers as standard. I,ve heard Ricks getting bashed about everything over the years including the national debt but never the strap lock buttons.
  6. The bass-great bass which punches well above it,s weight.I am not endorsed by them but I really got my eyes opened with this one. My original intention was to paint it black and fit a black scratchplate with the neck as fitted now but I,m warming to how it looks now so my intention is to build another in black this time so the hunt goes on for another neck ,scratchplate and a black vintage bass then I,ll have 2 necks lying spare. If Vintage want to build a few and donate one to me to use and evaluate for them I will gladly accept their offer plus I will not have a collection of spare necks in my house. Roland set up,well spotted sir and very good it is too.Excellent gear, plenty power and very good sound, tone and almost impossible to get a bad sound. It has a very good compressor on it,one of the best, chorus which I never use live but it,s a good one as well.Solid state pre and valve emulation which is excellent. The early gear was built in america and the later stuff in china.American one on the top is heavy but the bottom one has a neo speaker in it and is light in weight with wheels. You have the option of full range with the ext cab or subwoofer mode which would be good for dub or reggae.
  7. [attachment=89596:DSCN4071.JPG]I mailed them about a maple board and they didn,t say anything about doing one .I got a neck off a vintage musoman copy and fitted it to mine. So they did listen. The neck is a perfect fit just in case anyone want,s to do it.There is an extra fret and your saddles might not go far enough out to catch the intonation but the bridge I fitted caught it and the scale is now 35" from saddle to nut at the shortest ie furthest out saddle from the bridge. I like maple necks though
  8. No it will never come close. If you want a Rick then stump up,you can,t make a silk purse outa pigs ear
  9. marshall mb450 head runs 2x4 ohm cabs all day.
  10. Quality a man after my own heart You are not alone Any fool can read a manual but it takes a genius to figure it out for themselves
  11. hiho, they can,t be bothered to work with sound as it,s easier to have a core sound set up on the bass channel on their desk which they use for all their work. It,s the old"if it,s in tune and on time it,s fine ,nobody really listens to a bass" You can get the same if you have an intricate bass line you,ll hear the call"we don,t need that ,simplify it"good advice sometimes but I,d like to see them say that to Lemmy ,Geddy,The Ox,and everyone else I,ve forgotten to mention. I have in the past called their bluff and said that the sound was too toppy, clanky overdriven and a wee bit overpowering the track, then the rascal dropped himself in it ,smiled and got it right, wonderful chap after that and couldn,t do enough after that. You could turn up with a £10 beater with 10 year old flatwounds and if he says a word just tell him that "you always make me sound like that so I,m saving you the bother. Do not take my advice but it would be good if you could, better to change the studio. You will find a guy that loves bass.
  12. Good question, here,s my tuppence Thunderbird-epiphone t-bird pro-it,s active so you can grind it out-black of course musicman sub-active both of these are good cause you can have a sneaky slap n pop on them-both are great slappers P-bass with a hot pick up Or for a change-Rickenbacker big watts and a good di pre amp-sansamp or similar or try out a behringer bdi 21 for cheapness to see if you like it.
  13. oops forgot to say Ashdown 300 watts are not the loudest amp goin and it may only give 300 watt with the extension cab at whatever ohms,I might be wrong but without the extension it may only put out 180 watt. someone will correct me if I,m wrong, just goin off the top of my head. You might be better off getting something round the 500 watt mark as you don,t have to turn all the way up,but you will have plenty of headroom and some extra muscle if needed.
  14. Another 2x10 needed,it makes for a versitile rig as you can use one cab for a quieter gig, rehearsal and both for maximum thump. I use a 450 watt head which is plenty loud or a roland 1x15 combo with 1x15 powered extension which comes in at 600 watt and you can link them together for a 1k rig, only done it once and still shudder thinking about it as I foolishly switched the powered extension to sub instead of full range and brown trousered everyone including me. It is easier to move 2 2x10,s than 1 4x10.
  15. I built my own as well or heavily modified it . I wanted a maple neck, and a vintage 3 over 1 neck turned up for their musicman copy so I got that, straight forward job to fit, drill new pilot holes for the neck screws, nos schaller tuners, fake badass bridge which was a stopgap but it does the job very well so I might change it if a gotoh comes up cheap as.Wizard thumper, very high presence which can be tamed with the tone, very high output which can be rounded out with the volume. This pick up is almost like an active and I might go the whole hog and go for stealth 51. Apart from the pick up everything has been sourced from fleabag on 99p starting bids which did take a bit of patience and time but it,s a killer bass [attachment=87061:DSCN4071.JPG]
  16. Give Andy at Wizard a call,he,ll help you out
  17. Fantastic piece of wood but does it sound any better than my 99 jetglo with the vintage circuit and a hipshot bridge ?
  18. Treat yer misses to 4 or 5 days in Amsterdam and visit coffee shops then go for cream cakes and forget the troubles of the world for a few days
  19. yup it,s a semitone out.Thats an old studio trick in the days of tape.George Martin used it with the Beatles on a track I can,t remember the title of-first verse chorus was done in key and the rest of the song was recorded a semitone out and speeded up to pitch and change the whole vibe of the tune. You have to be very accurate in the studio so it remains the same tempo through to the end. Oh the days before computers.
  20. hi,I can get close to the ray sound with my p-bass but I have a Wizard thumper in it and use a sansamp bass driver or a hartke bass attack. i have both so I a/b them but the ray is schitso with the p-bass settings so the answer is yes and no. No you can,t with the same settings but changing things around you can get very close. Get both it makes sense.Get a sub bass and save a bit,got rid of ray for a sub and think they,re great, slightly different sound but can,t tell now,got used to it I suppose. I,ll get on the couch now.
  21. ooops forgot about the strings-I,ve went over to 90-95 sets for the last few years and have tone to spare, don,t miss the phat/fat strings at all and have done the same on my p-bass n bird. Fabulous bass only had it for 12 years now and sounds like a rick but can slot in anywhere.
  22. your choice 4001 over 4003,I,ll stick with 4003 with hipshot and vintage tone circuit. A good Rick is a good Rick.
  23. Hi, give A ndy a call at Wizard and he,ll sort you out.He is a great guy to talk to ,knows his stuff and very fast service. He will make what you want and his prices are very competitive.
