1. anybody for some Defunkt? Illusion: listen for the great press roll drum fill coming out of the bridge Dreadful guitar solo though.. he just runs out of ideas! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pL89ztA-rLs And Avoid the Funk This track sounds like they're going to lose it right from the start. The bass playing redeems it though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwn2deSzomw
2. This came up on nightshift too. Reply was: "They live in different countries so it's a bit of a logistical nightmare getting them together for a show. It's not like them driving a few amps up the M40, sadly." so there you go.
3.
Does it have to be specifically those things?
I thought that too, but I guess those are pretty much industry standard kit and you'd know what you're getting. They (Wire) must be used to getting promoters to get that kind of stuff in for them, I suppose.
4. Maybe someone in the area reading this might want to help - it is for Charity, after all. Anyhow: Guitarists - can you help Audioscope out? Hello everyone A bit of an unorthodox request which we were hoping the kind-hearted musicians of Oxford might be able to help us out with. Does anyone have any of the following kit that they'd be prepared to loan us for one evening, on 10 November? Your kit would be safely transported to and from the venue, and it'd be played by just one band at the Jericho that evening (er, Wire). Basically, if we could find this kit to borrow, it'd mean we wouldn't need to hire it, so we can give more money to Shelter as a result. Free ticket to see Wire in the offing if anyone can help us out! BASS AMP: SVT BASS HEAD X1 8X10 CABINET *GUITARS AMPS: Jazz CHORUS 120 or MESA BOOGIE IV Drop us an email at stuart AT audioscope DOT co DOT uk or simon AT audioscope DOT co DOT uk if you can help us out! Thanks guys, Stuart.
5. If the rosewood splinters bit, glue the bits back in before you lose them with superglue. I was told this by a luthier. After I had done mine.
6. If it is constructed anything like a Jack Bass (headless) it is a steel rod in an aluminium u-channel. The usual answer would be to take the fretboard off and replace it. I bored out the hole to the adjuster nut so that the rod assembly could be extracted, and they come out quite easily if you can grab it with something. This might not be as easy with a headed bass, as the, er, head might get in the way. Cheap replacement neck might be the way to go...
7.
Resurrecting this old thread... I've a gig coming up where ideally I'd switch between passive jazz and active fretless, but I'll be using someone else's amp and don't know how easy it would be to switch channels / whether there's an active/passive switch or otherwise match the gain. Am I right that a boss LS-2 wouldn't be ideal, as the gain's will still be mis-matched? (A further related point is that my Demeter Compulator distorts a bit with the active bass - there's an adjustable gain pot, but does anyone have any experience of matching this for switching between active and passive basses?) Or should I a) get active pickups for the Jazz or; get passive pickups for the fretless? Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi etc etc
I'd turn the active bass down a bit until it matched the passive and leave it set at that. Should stop your Demented Constipator distorting too.
8. Bud - Weiser? It all makes sense now!
9.
Could you hack it into something like this? Cheers Mark
And if the end doubles as a bottle opener, that's a bonus! Clever guys at LeCompte
10. I couldn't agree more, there's nothing wrong with Selects at all, and the humbuckers are pretty high output too.
11. use a guitar synth midi thingy for guitar and bass sounds?
12.
It looks like a softmint! Not necessarily a bad thing, but you wouldn't people to come up and start sucking on your instrument while you're on stage, now would you?
No, I'd probably wait till afterwards.
13. "Play Misty For Me" has a nice section at a jazz festival in it - might have been Weather Report at some point.
14. I really like the sound you got there. What did you use in the way of treatment(s), if any - sounds really chunky!
15. Don't fanny around, just fit a passive volume control to one channel of your a/b box. Could barely be simpler.
16. John Renbourn - the Black Balloon. Pentangle-tastic!!
17. I remember seeing Bebop Deluxe on their "Sunburst Finish" tour, and Bill Nelson swapped his 335 for and Audition or somesuch cheapie for the last number to set it on fire. I felt a bit cheated and glad at the same time.
18. Sikamikanico by RHCP. Gotta love the punky half-time/full on thing! Not one of their best known offerings (B-side of Under the Bridge 12") but it is in Wayne's World briefly, so you will have heard a bit of it.

20. Couldn't you just add a small cap across the single to make it a tad less bright? or a cap with a preset pot that you could hide away in the cavity somewhere, set it up how you like it and then forget?
21.
been using tru oil myself this week on an ash body - has got a lovely sheen to it. Am 9 coats down the line. How many did you do?
Err, I did about 3 as it was a law of diminishing returns. It was a bit scrappy under the finish, so the objective was to seal it rather than make it look great, I'm not into turd-polishing. However I did do lots of layers on the fingerboard (defretted) and that did sand down to a really nice smooth finish that felt great.
22. Alternatively, you could fill the slots with woodfiller and sand flat - works a treat. My U.S. Masters fretless neck apparently has the slots done (at the factory) in black epoxy. Looks lush! On my last 2 home defret jobs I used woodfiller (dark) for the slots and finished the board in Tru-Oil. That sands down to a really smooth finish, really easy to do too.
23. Think about why noone makes wooden tennis racquets anymore - stiffness and light weight. You design the resonances out. There would be a lot more material in a cab though, so that would be the killer, unless you can "acquire" it for less than you'd normally pay for it....
24. how the hell are you supposed to play the top 3 frets on that?
