1. Who plays the proto Stranglers bass line at the beginning of Barbecutie? That's pukka that is!
2. We should have a section for bass cabs that folk will post/courier. I have seen so many that I would want, but don't have the means to go get them. They should do the same on fleaBay etc, it would save me a lot of trouble.
3. Give the basses I have already, I would get a Thunderbird
4. Hmm...millimetres? I have no idea. Mine are all 7/64ths at the E sting 12th fret and 6/64ths at the G string 12th fret. The rest is all, err, radius. Edit: apparently 7/64th is 2.8 mm & 6/64th is 2.4 mm, so about half the height of the OP. Clank!!
5. Very sad. I used to go there in the early 80's when I lived in London. Lots of really good bands played there. Used to do The Greyhound in Fulham Palace Road a lot as well. Wonder if that's still there?
6. Nah, don't quit. And keep the gear for sure. I have a mate who plays in a punk band; he only picks a bass up every 2 years when they decide that they can be bothered to play any gigs. He just plays root notes and has a great time; just doesn't touch the bloody thing otherwise. Have a break and I reckon you will start hankering to do something in a few months
7. 3 at the moment. Fender MIM Jazz, Chickenbacker (4003 style), Ibanez SR505.
8. Can only get home page at the moment.
9.
That's easier said than done, I've been playing bass for coming up to a year and really enjoy it. But trying to find like minded individuals who are at the same level as myself and who enjoy the same music as myself (Motown, etc) and who would like to get together for a jam etc is nigh on impossible. I joined "Join My Band" in a hope of getting together with other musicians but if you're not already a well established bassist with a minimum of 20 years experience and a back catalogue of every genre of rock (plus must be aged 18 - 23) then you'll be very fortunate to find anyone.
This is true for me also. I find it difficult to find anyone to play with nowadays. I am 52, so that makes it more difficult. One thing I would say, is that a lot of the stuff that some people on Join My Band post is inflated, and is often complete bs; this is counter productive as it puts some folks off, and annoys better players when they turn up and see the reality. I have seen bass players looking to form bands who play great sounding slap solo's but can't play basic stuff in time, for example. I wish they wouldn't exaggerate, but such is life. I played guitar then, but am now a basic bass player. Living in Norfolk doesn't help either
10. 3/10 here. I knew I wasn't very metal though. I know my '70's stuff, but that's about it.
11. Hi Twincam. I'm not that great either, but sometimes I just need to sit and think about what it is I want to achieve, and what it is that I feel I'm not good at. Are there aspects that you avoid because you think that they are too difficult? I am guilty of this too. Also, remember that being "good" is relative. Many people who listen to bass playing have only heard it from pretty good players, so their expectations are probably unrealistic. Your playing may not sound like Geddy Lee, for example, but he's a professional and has been playing for 45 years. Try something that you haven't tried before, like a different style, or different music. Practice routines can get really stale. Also, and this is a big one for me, stop worrying about how "good" you are and enjoy what you're doing. If it just becomes a race with yourself to achieve goals that aren't even clearly defined, then you will never feel that you are getting anywhere. You don't say why you can't take lessons, but couldn't you just stretch to one or two? It might give you the right perspective to get back your enthusiasm. Hope it all works out.
12. I am a clumsy git, so no point in even trying to keep my basses pristine
13. Remember the Future & Down to Earth by Nektar In the Spirit of Things by Kansas Voyage of the Acolyte by Steve Hackett
14. Remember him from when I was a kid, he had that big hat. Alone Again and Nothing Rhymed are good songs, but other than that?
15. This stuff happens a lot, and it's not just music shops. I have seen some ridiculous behaviour from shop staff of all ages. CamdenRob is right that we can't have it both ways, but one of the reasons I shop so much online is to avoid some of these idiots with their smirking and piss taking.
16. I got one of these; surprisingly useful: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vox-AP2-BS-amPlug-Headphone-Amplifiers/dp/B00NAUKJTY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1454862619&sr=8-1&keywords=vox+headphone+amp+bass
17. I just got hold of an Ibanez SR505. It's a nice bass and is certainly light.
18. Not sure about the 'millenial generation", as I am a lot older than that, but that description of work certainly applies to me; I never liked working, and never would work if I could get away with it. It bores me, that's just the way it is; I can't help it
19. I have to say that I think the sound of a Jazz bass is cool. I don't tend to fetishise basses for their looks. As others have said; if it sounds good and is played well, it's cool.
20. 52 here. Haven't been playing all that long either. have strummed amateurishly on guitar for years, but bass much more recent. Great fun though. Out of interest, how do you older guys (older age bracket, not older than me ) get on with finding people to play with; I am struggling a bit.
21. I like both, but would put STAX just in front.
22. Love Peter Gabriel; not so fond of Sting, although I like some of the old Police stuff. PG has been working on his next album for a long time though
