  1. The back is made of beautiful woods. However I haven’t played since before covid lockdown so it’s gone on Gumtree.

  4. I’ve played 5ers since 1996, but now only have 1 and 3 four stringers plus a 4 string EUB. There is hardly any thing I find I need to break out the 5 for, however if there’s likely to be several songs in either Eb or Bb then I think the 5 gives more scope.
  5. Really nice bass for the money. Did you get one that wasn’t covered in the remains of a few pints of beer? Last time I had guitars from pawn brokers they were pretty pretty sticky and dirty.

For those that find a standard mandolin to tight on the fretboard but the bouzouki too long, there is the octave mandola, known as the octave mandolin in the USA which seems a more sensible name to me as that is what it is. A mandolin tuned an octave lower. This is mine, made by Dorset luthier Robin Greenwood:

  9. I never understood why a piece of black wood was put under pickups when Jim Burns renovated it. It made look a right mess and very amateurish.
