  1. Carol Kaye always had foam under the strings too.
  2. Not that I do, but you could try using a plectrum. Loads of people do, some of them are even quite good bass players - Macca, Dave Pegg, Chris Chandler, Herbie Flowers to name just a few.
  3. I’ve owned 4 fretless basses, 3 lined 1 unlined. My current 1 is lined. Was there a particular reason for your wanting unlined other than the look?
  4. Set of Hofner Contemporary Flat wound strings .040 - .095 which were on a violin bass for about 4 weeks and home used only before I decided they didn’t give the tone I was looking for. They produce the classic flat thump. Happy to post and if you can collect I’ll knock the postage off the price.
  5. Does this end your previous affair with HB? Will Thomman recover?
  6. I agree @Cat Burrito but strangely Gibson and Guild didn’t do it back in the day.
  7. As travel is out for most of us any chance of you getting a courier?
  8. I always fancied one of these back in the day when I had a modest Ibanez Roadster, but I fear that nowadays this might prove a bit heavy for my aging bones. Any clue as to weight?
  9. This has appeared on the Thomman site, shortly available, but it’s not even on Guild’s own site yet. A Starfire 1 bass with single pickup and tailpiece rather than the more familiar Starfire 11 with a bridge tailpiece and big pickup/s. I don’t think guild ever made a 1 that looked like this but it has got a retro look and is not costing a fortune. £439 @ Thomman but with the new rules presumably they’ll be import charges. I hope someone in the U.K. stocks them as I’d really like to try one once we’re allowed out again.
  10. It looks like Bass Collection have finally listened to the criticism of Bassists and changed their dreadful logo, at least on the Detroit and Profile models.
  11. How is this working for elsewhere? I seem to remember a year or so back Japan agreed a free trade deal with EU. I’ve never imported from Japan so don’t know if back then imports became Tax free. If they did had Brexit knocked that on the head?
  12. I don’t know why we think the Thunderbird is a heavy rock instrument. A well known harmony band used them.
  13. Why does this remind me of a Westone?
  14. I guess now U.K. has left the EU, this will be subjected to raw on import.
  15. I’d not seen the FGN Jazz so went on a trawl. In case it’s still an option , Jow Music have one in their sale reduced to £499. Snazzy Blueburst finish which is rather eye catching.
  16. Given the grungy condition, I hope it was a bargain.
  17. Almost the same as the Gibson original as favoured by Kyle Eastwood who has since had a custom made version by a London Luthier to replace this one.
  18. 2 new Korean made models, neither of which interest me. They’ve taken away 2 other models - Spectorcore and Performer no longer listed on website.
  19. To follow the Hofner thing, you could argue that middle and neck is the same as on the “Cavern” model of the violin bass. That was the original positions, I wonder why Hofner moved away from it to the bridge and neck?
  20. I was thinking of the Burgundy they used on some EB2’s which was metallic. Perhaps I got the names muddled?
  21. The headstock seems to be nicked from the earliest Newport’s before that too changed to a batwing.
  22. I misspoke about Burgundy Mist, it’s actually called Sparking Burgundy, but it looks much the same to me.
