1. Fantastic. Been using Martin recently for general luthier work and really intrigued by their range. Think the seed might already be planted. I asked on BC a while back if anyone owned an Enfield but didn't get much back. Keen to know how the 'all things to all man' pickups compare to P and J sounds. Can you squeeze that J scoop out of them? Resisted trying one so far as I know what would happen
2.
at that price I'll have to buy one. ..Plus I support WHUFC. COYI
Lifelong Hammer and Maiden fan, toying with idea - interesting at MIM price. Pre-orders seem to be nearer £900 but maybe that will change once it's actually out there.
3.
Sims custom have a good reputation, tho' suspect they're not the cheapest: http://www.simscusto...m/html/home.htm Should give you an idea of cost though.
+1 Sims are excellent. £250-300 is about right.
4. Admittedly first time here, but really enjoyed all that, some great tunes and v hard to pick a winner. Shame the polls don't allow a 1-2-3
5. +1 for Infectious Groove - The Plague.. Heavy and happy album, never takes itself seriously and all the better for it
6. Might be a decline for the enormo-dome festivals but there's more than ever happening, especially across Europe. Cheaper tickets and sunnier. For a niche music festival of this scale, there's only a dozen or so bands in the world you can have as headliners. Every year the same old stuff (and the same old men).
7.
My hand was forced into buying the new Amplug2. My old one broke last night. The jack got caught and pushed into the housing and just makes fuzzy noises. Should have it tomorrow
FFS. My first one broke after 3 months. This one has lasted a month. My arm caught the aux in wire putting the bass down, instead of just pulling free, the casing is frail enough to crack open and tear the aux socket out. Whole unit failed. Too tricksy to resolder, and out of principle not buying a third. Any good alternatives out there that will sustain daily use?
8. I'm the unlikely owner of a Gary Willis Ibanez (the cheaper one) - I don't like his playing, and found the ramp really annoying and removed it. I found it got in the way. It's still a nice fretless for the money, even without a ramp.
... in songs like 'Hit me with your rhythm stick' .. with just 'one finger like a plectrum' I can do it fine, but want to do it with two fingers.
Woodinblack - what is this - is it like a fixed finger waggle? I can't imagine playing Rhythm Stick with 1 finger?
9. Sounds great. We've just done a Production & Distribution deal direct with a distributor. They pay for the physical pressing, and have the exposure to get this the necessary digital audience. We split sales revenue, but retain the copyright. Initially we intended to pay for the pressing ourselves, but one distributor liked it enough to propose a deal. There's probably BCers doing this on a bigger (and more established) scale who can give wider advice. This is just one way of doing it, that's working for us. Good luck, look forward to hearing how it develops.
10.
Surely a 'stock' bass is less likely to be replaceable? If you own a 2002 Fender US Standard, you can't replace it with the EXACT same model as it's not in production anymore. You'd have to get the 2012 US Standard instead which will have a large number of differences, such as neck profile, pickups, colours etc. If you bought a custom bass, you could ask them to make you something MUCH closer to your original one and are quite likely to remember working on the original for reference.
Yeah I guess I was thinking of the £4k vintage instrument, and inevitably Fenders. Given how erratic they are in build, it would be a complete one-off. Agree though if it was a Custom build from anywhere that's still building basses, it would be replicable.
I play / gig a 63 Precision , it's pretty worn and battle-scarred and one more ding or dent just adds to the character of the bass. 99% of the audience don't know the value of any instrument , but I never let the bass out of my sight in case the 1% scumbag tries to help himself to it .
Martin - do you ever take a different bass if you're playing a gig where you know you won't be able to keep that close an eye on it?
11. There's a great reissue of Thriller containing interviews with Rod. He's someone who should be more celebrated than he is.
12. IMO there's a difference between a 'stock' bass and something unique. Assuming insurance, a £4k Fodera is replaceable with a near identical model, but a £4k vintage XYZ, could have a neck shape / tone / feel that was irreplaceable. Still wouldn't be digging the garden with it, just less paranoid locking it in the boot.
13. I know their tracking notifications can lag up to 24hrs, hence products still listed as Out for Delivery when they're already with you. There's huge demand over Xmas period, combined with overloaded couriers. Ordered some Korg stuff 27/12. 'In stock' at point of order, but 'out of stock' by the time the order completed. Fine really, just a difficult time of year. Currently in transit. Thomann CS generally excellent, and their English a lot better than mein deutsch
14. Could do alot worse than those Audio Technica or AKG around the £100 mark. I know many people mix down fully on cans but for me you have to do the final stretch on monitors, it always throws up some unexpected stuff.
15. All of the above. Hard to appreciate when you hear it in isolation but fretbuzz, and tiny clanks and clips is all part of what gives a live recorded bass it's life in the mix. That and the fact it sits around the beat in a way a keys bass just can't replicate.
16. ..and deliver me from temptation. Glad this didn't hang around any longer
17.
Drive.
+1 Don't know why I missed this off earlier. Brilliant soundtrack - both the few 3rd party songs selected, and the epic work from Cliff Martinez. Works so well in the film as well. Zane Lowe's arrogant reworking of the Drive soundtrack gave me hives. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/2M7xfhDYK4f9MDfBbR5zxHj/radio-1-rescores-drive
18. Thats great, how did he end up on there? (loving the Laphroaig BTW)
19.
Known about his stuff for a while and he sure is a fantastic bass player who seems to rarely be mentioned. This was the first video I saw of his. Full song is Pimpasaurus Rex for those interested https://www.youtube....h?v=tS7nlmS9Yxs
That pickup tap / slap with the finger tips?! If I've seen that before I've never appreciated that's what has happening.
20.
Is it too blindingly obvious to mention Ry Cooder's work on Paris Texas?
Great shout, I need to revisit that. While I remember - Eddie Vedder wrote a solo acoustic soundtrack for the indie film 'Into The Wild' which has some lovely tracks on it.
21. I do love a soundtrack. Much of the above, plus Beverley Hills Cop OST - Patti Labelle, Junior, Shalamar! Woman in Red - Stevie Wonder Batman - Prince Virgin Suicides by Air Truman Show OST has some great orchestral tracks Heat - much mentioned, esp Philip Glass More recently Daft Punk - Tron was pretty good
22.
https://www.youtube....h?v=Y7dGdrP3pms my band is literally obsessed with this video :-) brilliant!!!
Wow. That phone intro - what a joy. Now doing the rounds of everyone I know
23. Love it. Obviously great news you've taken it this far and hope it gets further, deserves to.
