1. Seems this bass isn't £11k. The BGM review takes place at BassGear who've brought the bass into the UK. In the back cover of the same issue, BassGear are advertising it for (only) £8,750. Slightly lame for BGM, given they're running the whole '£11,000' schtick on the cover.
2.
Thanks for the info Drax. Well that's a relief now that I know it's Amboyna burl. For a moment there I thought it wasn't going to be worth the money.
This stuff doesn't grow on trees you know
3.
I'm missing something here. The bass mentioned in the OP is listed in the current Fodera 2015 price list as $5050 . Even with import and VAT, where does this £11,000 come from?
The BGM review model is the Amboyna Burl Monarch 4 Elite No - I'd never heard of him either. Turns out it's a type of wood..
4. is 'wrong' technique usually only seen in players made famous by their band, or are there session players in this as well? Assumption would be today's session players, and jazz players, tend to have what is accepted as the taught technique
5. What this bass needs is a definitive 1000 word review from one of BC's old guard
6. If you can play everything you want to, and it sounds good, I guess the technique is good. Norman Watt-Roy, Macca, Jack Bruce all have habits and foibles a teacher would steer you away from.
7. My £50 was rejected last time. The photo gets me. I just want to clamp it in that WorkMate and attack it with a bandsaw
8. The basses are worth whatever people are prepared to pay. Keeping supply low and prices high all helps with their marketing. Personally, I'd feel a wally with one - my chops wouldn't live up to the price tag. All the gear and no idea. I have however willingly spent much more than that on a car, which I care much less about than my basses.
9.
If you skip through that clip - like I just did - all you hear is bmm-TWANG-bmm-TWANG-bmm-TWANG-bmm-TWANG...
if you watch the clip in it's entirety, you hear that too.
10. Marcus Miller guest bass on Letterman. Shipping strike in US means even he's not got a Sire yet.. https://youtu.be/owHNJQP5wmA
11. Brilliant video. Love the reckless roommate
12.
Then I got this email from the drummer! Finding the right person to record the band is hard, we need someone who is into the music we play to be able to get the best out of it. No point picking someone who has been doing it for 40 years and they only like Jazz etc. We need someone who is into classic rock and not some long haired hippy!!! What does everyone think?
I think you should do what you want and not worry what a drummer thinks.
13. There's always a leap between the slick video demo and the reality once it's in your hands. I've tried and tried with various writing apps on the iPad but have to concede it's not quite there yet.
14. Sounds like you need a vintage jazz. Make an appointment with Dr Baxter
15. People posting on a public website getting concerned about being quoted in a magazine. And we're all hiding behind silly names anyway. Relax
16. I run it on half BPM, and hear it on beats 2 and 4
17. One knock on effect is it opens more of a dialogue with BGM, and who knows - maybe some of the perennial BC complaints might cut through. Be really interesting to see what Sylvia writes, can only be a good thing.
18. I really didn't get on with Dunlop SuperBrights, way too zingy and pingy - they may be exacerbating whatever underlying issues there are.
19. You finally got one! Great review Mark, enjoyed that. The most comprehensive piece on it yet, and good to hear the audio too. Sounds as billed. Think this might be the exact model I end up with. Dan
20. Well intentioned 'nearly but not quite' present. Fender Stratocaster, Grey T-shirt, Large. Brand new with tags attached. £19 in the UK http://www.gak.co.uk...2TyfBoCkdXw_wcB Yours for a very reasonable £6 (inclusive of postage). Trades for Jazz Bass T-shirt (Med) or Pedulla teatowel
21. Reallt enjoyed that. Never really given them enough of my time. What's the best place to start?
22.
That's one of the main things that really kept me watching. He seems like a thoroughly nice bloke. His prices actually don't seem too crazy either...
No they really don't - given it's just 1 guy and no CNC. Truly handbuilt. There's always something very genuine about great luthiers - passionate about the instruments, not the business
23. Didn't intend to but just sat through the whole of that. What a great guy, would love to commission a bass one day
24.
I constantly look at these just to get the surf green body if anything and upgrade everything on it and maybe a Status neck. Is it worth it?
Full size one is £100 new. Can't really go wrong. If the finish on this one is anything to go by, you might keep the J&D neck.
