1.
Just a thought: if Gibson and Fender are seeing a drip off in sales, does this really mean the market is declining? Is it because Americans are buying well made foreign instruments at lower prices? Are users bored with the year-old look of the Fender P and Jazz?
That's how I read this. The behemoths struggling isn't the full picture. Sire, Thomann, etc - having a different time. Interesting that Gibson was just $5m in '86..
 2.
omg, I'm in love. Blue vinyl or do I need a trip to spec saves? I want this in my life now!!!
Yeah they're navy blue, first ones TKS had made. Great company to buy from, good value and custom spec. Barrie @ Bassgear is your man
 3.
what cab is that one?
the S112. One with tweeter, one without. Huge fan of these cabs..
 4.
I bought one of these from Argos. http://www.argos.co....ber/7001538.htm ...

...If size is not an issue, I'd probably go for one of these, they're robust: http://www.amazon.co...eywords=trolley
Great advice all. Got the Einhell 90kg truck, £30 from Argos. First trip South London to Northampton return. Feels pretty solid, hammers up and down curbs, and thunders along the pavement. Learned - Avoiding tube station stairs is complicated when changing lines. - There are lots of hidden lifts, mainly used by lazy people who could probably do with climbing a few stairs. - Truck *just* fits in a Prius boot (uber..) when you return after hours Yet to attempt both cabs, might be over ambitious. All good though, hopefully many more miles ahead..
 5. Perfect, thanks guys. Will check them both out
 6. Sound & Vision Love that Eno bassline..
 7. Reviving this very old thread - I need a trolley for my lightweight cabs, when gigging by tube / train. With bass and amp on my back, I can carry 1 cab by hand but not ideal. 2 is impossibly awkward. Cabs weight not huge, max 20k, but has to put up with walking / pavements / curbs etc. Anyone on the thread above, or anyone else - have any tried and tested recommendations?
 8. Lots of the above. For me it's stacked pots - fiddly live, and too easy to damage.
 9.
Another thread here has got me thinking about this. I've got 6-7 basses. At any one month-is I play 2-3 of them regularly. The others only get picked up on occasions; usually just to compare something. My "problem" is when I decide to change things round and play an old favourite I find the strings have gone dead and they need changing. This can get crazy; changing almost unplayed strings. My solution could be to sell the bass. What do you think /do ?
How long has it taken for strings to go dead on an unplayed bass? I would have thought this was more like year(s) than months.
 10. I use 'friend with photoshop' - posters are simple to someone fluent in it, takes 5 mins and looks great.
 11.
Sheesh - that whole post went over my head! I'd ask you to explain it in layman's terms but I'm afraid I still wouldn't understand it!
Ah crap. That really wasn't my intention, apologies. Well there's no such thing as a bad question and I'll bet whatever you'll ask I've asked before Happy to field anything on PM
 12. I get this alot. Changed luthiers recently after using the same one for years, felt like I was cheating on the old one!
 13.
...using your hifi for monitoring is perfectly possible, so long as you're aware of what the relative sound of your stereo is.
That's the message. It's all about understanding the relativity. I mainly use NS10s - which are pretty raw and nasty, and took some getting used to - but you know if you get it sounding good on them (esp the bass), it will sound good most places. Getting a track sounding 'good' on biased monitors confuses the picture, and IMHO makes it much harder to understand the mix. Different stereos will boost differently, and once you start compressing into MP3 / pressing to vinyl / etc - the shortcomings come through. There are people using very coloured monitors and making it work - but if you're starting from scratch it's a tougher gig to get right. Also really don't underestimate the role of paying for proper mastering. No matter how good your studio set up is, you can really only take the track so far (and one benefit is it will help fill out the bottom / mid you're finding lacking currently). If you're serious about the tune, it's worth every penny. (repeatedly edited through a boxing day hangover.. )
 14. The Major-Minor thread is excellent. Another great tool if you're starting from absolute scratch, Stuart Clayton's Bass Essentials - Reading Music series, can't recommend these enough https://www.basslinepublishing.com/bass-essentials/the-bass-guitarist-s-guide-to-reading-music-beginner-level.html
 15.
Yes Jazz basses are cool... but every time I buy one, the bloody nut width is too narrow. What's that comment about doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result being a sign of insanity..? Wibble. Bwa-ha-ha. Spoon. Herring.
I capitalised on this earlier this year, taking your Sire MM Still going strong, fabulous instrument. If not BC bass of the year, certainly the most hyped.
 16. GAS, and desire to play better aren't mutually exclusive.
 17. Back to the OP, do the media really persist in the notion that working class bands are more legitimate? Struggling to think of a successful band* in the last 10yrs the media would label 'working class'.. *band - not solo urban acts
 18. Echoing Gareth's point above - keep it simple. Some of what has been recommended is quite full on. When you're starting out, the iRealPro app is invaluable for demystifying tune structure and chord changes, and a great practice tool for walking lines.
 19. Poor Duff still rocking a Blackberry, no wonder he's selling his basses.
 20.
Hi inmates. I hope that this isn't one of "those" posts. Apologies in advance if it is but I did do due lurking dilligence, honest. I'm an ex-semi-pro bassist (did music college, sessions, pit work etc.) who was forced to join the rat race and sell most of my gear for the usual reasons. 25 years later I want to get back into playing and am fortunate to be able to afford some decent gear. Apart from a brief fliration with Yamahas I've always been a jazz bass guy and I guess I still am although due to a bout of middle-aged contrarian-ism I don't want another Fender or Fender-alike although I do want a 4 string with a jazz-style passive, dual pickup configuration and correspondingly simple controls. These are not "musts" but my starting point. So my short list currently is:

Cort Rithmic (Jeff Berlin)
PRS SE Kingfisher
Chapman MLB-1
??
What other instruments should I be looking at? I'll mostly be doing home recording and small club gigs so I've pretty much decided on a Mark Bass 300 combo but are open to suggestions in this area as well. All advice and/or personal abuse welcomed!
Hi FDS +1 for the Cort Rithimic. High price for a Cort but fantastic value for money, very well made, allows low action and the thin neck makes it effortless to play. Tone and controls are pretty straight - whilst there's a nice Jazz parp, it won't bark under attack. Great review vid from Dood of this parish; http://www.iguitarma...ff-berlin-bass/ Still unsure on the design (by his wife), but like the feel enough for this to become current main bass. Surprised there isn't more love for them on here. Heard Jeff's relationship with Cort has run it's course. Hopefully the fact it doesn't have his name anywhere on it (another plus point), means they'll keep making it.
 21. The Gallery is still great, a lot of varied stock. I've bought a lot online, but twice bought basses from there I didn't walk in expecting to buy. Must be a real headache trying to stock a shop with mass appeal.
 22. What a beauty, looks played and cared for. 4 bolt too Enjoy
 23. I snapped up Discreet's bass last week. Having wallowed in all the hype - and then missed the boat with Thomann - I was all set for an anti-climax. Boring as it will be to hear again - I really can't believe they've delivered this for the price they have. Won't repeat the extensive review on here - suffice to say despite minor flaws, the quality is where it counts. The natural resonance, and the Active range are superb. The neck is better finished than my 2014 Am Std Jazz. Used this live in anger yesterday, it really delivers - I feel I'd be well into super Jazz territory before expecting more. Lucky for Squier these aren't (currently) hanging side-by-side in the shop.
