1. I'm with you on the Kala / noodling. Sounds like a nice way in. J&D Micro Jazz also a great option. Short enough for a 6yr old, only £75.
2. Teachers of traditional orchestral instruments will be used to teaching kids from 5-6, they'll be able to bring them on without putting them off. Might be more of a challenge finding an electric bass teacher willing / capable of this. My mum is a violinist and frequently had pupils start at this age. By the time they get past grade 8 they can be off to the Royal Academy, but some are completely sick of it and abandon the instrument entirely. Have to be prepared that starting them really young is essentially your choice, not theirs.
3.
All makes sense, except that rosewood is definitely more dense and less 'spongey' than maple. I know this from having worked with both woods a fair bit. A quick Google confirms this; density of maple = 39-47 lb/ft3, density of Rosewood = 50-55 lb/ft3 Edit: strangely enough, despite being more dense, rosewood is more porous. No Idea how this has a bearing on tone
..and then we're getting into alder v ash bodies
4. Great clip, not seen that before. His bands always look so drilled, and slightly scared.
5. Are we talking rosewood or maple fretboard?
6.
I'm in an email chat with an expert in psychoacoustics between posts here, ideas for a controlled study of these questions are taking shape.
This is going up a gear now. So what defines 'brightness' for a test - is frequencies / resonance ?
7. We need to run the official test so we can move the debate on to to strings, finger size, wind direction, etc.
8. It's almost worth doing this gig as a right of passage - to help set your own ticklist of things you'll never do again. Metal bands playing alongside non-metal bands in local gigs, you might as well just set off the fire alarm.
9. Would have liked to have seen this, but I'm stuck on family duty tonight. Rhythm Factory is a great venue and location - stones throw from London's best pakistani grilled meats in Tayyabs, and opposite the Nags Head (pounds in a pint pot..). The complete evening - blues, bhunas and boobs.
10. Just realised what this tutorial reminds me of http://youtu.be/ueHC7pgfYGU?t=94
11.
I've done it that way but always loosen the strings first.
Seems there's quite a few people comfortable doing it that way, so can't all be bad. Difference I guess between what you're comfortable with doing on your own bass, vs someone elses.
12.
I do find it slightly ironic that a book about Fender was written by a Mr Gibson
Maybe that's why he's recommending this method
13. Are you building this at the Underworld?
14. Yeah pics would be good. My specialist subject is dry split / cracking fingers
15. Andy Summers autobiography 'One train later' is a great read. He's morphed into one of those Men that look like Old lesbians now.
16. ***THIS IS NOW SOLD*** Ibanez GWB35 Gary Willis – 5 string fretless Owned since new (from The Gallery), bought for a specific project but no need for a fretless 5 any more so time to move this on. Fantastic basses these for the money - light, comfortable and fast player, great variety of active tone. Bass is in very good condition. One slight ding above the pick up, visible on the body shot below. Just had full set up and service by Martin Sims, plus new strings (Elite Stadium rounds) - no miles since. · 34inch scale · 45mm nut · 16.5mm spacing · Basswood body · 3 piece maple neck, tri-wing tuners · Ebonol fingerboard, lined fretless 24 fret, with ramp. (Personally prefer it without, pictures below show both). · SFR-GWB Custom neck pickup · EQB-GWII 2-band EQ · 2 strap pins in base (apparently GW specced these to stabilise the bass when leaned against an amp!) Comes with lightweight gig bag. Bass is in Broadstairs, Kent if you want to view. I'm in London daily and happy to arrange delivery / collection in person, London / Kent area. Can ship at buyers expense. Sale only, no trades thanks.
17.
Was it a bass?
Ah. Just assumed, but didn't click the link. Same principles apply though
18. The seller might be comfortable with passing on your contact details to the buyer, if it was actually sold. I'd be surprised if the seller would just pass you the buyers details (and slightly annoyed if I was the buyer). And get ready to be royally mugged on the price if you're chasing it down like this, but I guess you're prepared for this. Personally I'd take this situation as a sign that specific bass wasn't for you, and a better one will be along soon.
19.
Latest delivery from YODEL. Used to be an Epiphone Les Paul.
Bloody hell. How was it packed? And what have Yodel said?
20. Vintage truss rod adjustment. It's the official Fender guy but looks like a real cowboy job. Does anyone actually do it like this? (from 4mins - not for the faint hearted)
21.
Saw some new colours today - there's a very cool dark blue
!
22.
Just popped into Bassgear and while I was there the deal was being done for the sale of this bass. I had a bit of a chat with the buyer who was a really nice chap. You heard it here first!
Get him on here to justify it !
