1. Don't get too excited. Covert bass to smuggle onto family holidays. 28.75inch scale, and exactly 39inches / 1 metre in length. Spurred by Mattmit's recent surf green purchase, and the insanely cheap Jack & Danny prices - for me this was a credible alternative to the rubber string brigade. Expectations low for a £72 bass but it's great. Neck is a nice wood and well machined, no snagging frets. Iron work cheap but not that nasty. Pots feel solid and whilst it's not the meatiest tone, decent strings and some FX would make it gig worthy (although you would look like a giant). Comments so far have ranged from 'I feel sorry for it' to 'is that a WARWICK Davis?' First bass I've owned not natural wood or 3TSB. I might be converting. So cheap you don't mind a chocolate covered 4yr old having a go. Zoe's Teentown on youtube shortly
  2. Not that you could ever know it was genuine, but 'Real name & Photo' would kill a lot of 9am-5pm traffic
  3.
I like to cut the scone in half, then spread jam before cream on one half and cream before jam on the other, people just can't cope with that.
people in Devon can't cope with those Cornish ways
  4.
I'm going to be doing exactly the same pretty shortly, using the same Hercules wall brackets which I will be putting up using these - http://www.screwfix....ck-of-100/11923 I've got two 50" televisions currently fitted to two walls in the house using these, super strong and far easier and quicker than drilling into masonry.
Do these go through into the masonary as well?
  5. Assuming you can get far enough into the brick (2 inches in brick itself) then you won't need an external plank. Definately go larger than the supplied screws.
  6.
This is a very interesting thread and as a video reviewer myself, I am open to suggestions as to how to make reviews more interesting (though I am bound by certain limitations which stops us from maybe doing the kind of reviews I would like.) My closing lines usually remind you that the best way to hear and decide if the instrument is for you is to get it on your own lap for a try out. The videos can help you make a decision, but your hands will tell you if a bass is right for you or not. And here's just a few of the reviews I have done : http://basschat.co.u...-video-reviews/
Basses aside, I've bought 2 other bits of kit (FX) on the strength of Dan's reviews - as have many others I'm sure.
  7.
The problem with the written word is that you don't always get the emotion or subtext that the writer intended and can easily superimpose your own emotional state into what has been written. I was accused of being 'patronising' the other day. How on earth can you write in a patronising way?
Patronise is a verb, a 'doing' word. It means 'to treat with an apparent kindness that betrays a feeling of superiority'.
  8. Lovely bass. Also enjoying the Danish furniture 😊
  9.
I thought they'd all fallen out, besides the 2 brothers ?
Money split them up but it's brought them back together again
  10.
Would the speakers on your choice of listening to the audio demo make a difference as well?
Absolutely. Different headphones, speakers, etc, so many variables seems worthless having a clip of an individual bass. If you broadly want to hear what a typical J / P / Stingray sounds like it's fine, but comparing two basses of the same model is tough. I bought a cracking J bass last year from Andy Baxter - thankfully it sounded nothing like the audioclips! This is no criticism of Andy, just a comment that even with the same person recording, someone who does this for a living, there are so many factors at play it makes the task redundant.
  11. I've never taken anything meaningful from an audioclip / vid of a bass. It's hard enough just demoing in a shop, given all the variables like amp / strings etc. Once you're then layering on recording and playback, impossible to get a helpful comparison.
  12.
I was hoping to get this from Andertons too, but they only got one in stock and "Police Squad" beat me too it They're not now due in stock again at Andertons until the end of May and GAK until August, apparently Fender have completely sold out! Thomman have them due early April for nearly £100 cheaper than UK prices, but I've never ordered from there before and am a bit reluctant to order something so expensive from another country where I can't easily take it back. Looks like its a waiting game.....
FWIW - Thomann return policy has been excellent when I've used it
  13. Well I wouldn't build one for a start 😊 All personal taste but for me - narrow 4 string, 34-35mm nut - and passive
  14. Bebop books are good for training yourself on the fingerboard (albeit basic rhythm). Harold Miller's Bebop Bass is great.
  15.
Can I just say I promise this isnt me with a different account
Well you would say that. Maybe this a double bluff?
  16.
Personally I think whoever in the band that keeps turning up hopelessly unprepared and uses the time to learn a song from scratch rather than do that in their own time should pay an extra levvy but I doubt it would catch on...
IME the most unprepared is also the least able to pay.
  17.
and whatever happened to GWAR?
Still going, just about. Great cover from last year http://www.avclub.com/video/gwar-covers-pet-shop-boys-211000
  18. Lifelong Hammer and Maiden fan, so really want to like these but scared of the neck! The older SH signature model was a beast - my hobbit hands would struggle. It's listed as U neck, be good to hear your verdict.

    SOLD

mrbassman you're a bottomless pit ! Cracking bass. Don't even to wish you GLWTS
  20.
Now I don't want to slag the bloke off (after all he's a member on here), but I left feeling like I was a terrible musician and I wanted to stop playing bass for good.
The worst possible outcome from a lesson, the complete opposite of what you go there for. In years gone by I've had similar. You're doing the right thing by walking away now. Many great teachers out there, I'll PM you a name
  21. Well you certainly can't be challenged again for not supplying enough photos.
  22.
Dunno about Elton specifically, but a lot of retail "dot" music will have been transcribed after the fact.
..and generally all transcribed by someone else's (often dodgy) ear.
  23. Welcome and hello from Broadstairs!
  24. Depressingly, it's straight 'austerity' cuts, been going on a while > http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-27663696 This plus the massive cuts to Arts Council funding aren't great news for music.
