Thanks all. Things have advanced a little. After spending a fair few hours writing on guitar this weekend I've realised I can get fairly decent on a guitar (not lead) fairly quickly and writing is really fun. It's a different thing to bass...I enjoy it but bass feels 'normal' to me. I suspect this is just being used to it. I've now decided to move on my 00/01 Telecaster and put it on ebay to opt for a different Telecaster and an Albert Lee HH Musicman...not sure which Tele model I fancy yet, but I feel like despite my old one being immaculate and great to play, I fancy a change, One good thing is that it is stopping me mounting up more and more basses which quite frankly I will never need now. A few guitars is a nice variation. I'm hoping to end up with: Musicman Albert Lee HH - I've loved this shape/model since it came out, and the HH will give me a nice change, plus all rosewood neck, YUM. Fender Telecaster (s) - Either an American Vintage reissue, or a new modern American Standard and a Road Worn. If I choose to get just one Telecaster, I might also opt for a Roadworn Strat. Rig sounds great, and I have more than enough pedals to keep me occupied.

Aguilar Tonehammer 500 vs Little Mark iii (or any other suggestions?)
Where does the Orange Terror 500 fit into this conversation...?
Loudest of all of them. Cheapest, great UK service (my guitar Dual Terror had a faulty tube which I didn't spot for a while and they just sent me a new one, no issues) but more importantly, great Orange tone. If you like a grunty, fairly aggressive and more 'tubes being pushed' tone, the Orange is one of the best out there. Plus, it looks cool. Bonus. I think we are relatively lucky to have a decent and large amp manufacturer based in the UK. -
To be fair, my LMIII is from before the Indonesian days but I really like it and it's more than loud enough. However, the TH500 is calling as it'll match my Aggie cabs!
If I had an Italian LM3 I would be keeping it now...and adding the TH500 as well -
So is the TH500 250w rating @ 8ohms louder than the LMIII 300w rating @ 8ohms?
Nope, unfortunately not in this case. The TH will push harder at 8 and 4 ohms, and uses a power module used in 800 watt amps but without straining it. I wouldn't worry about the stated wattage so much. My RH450 was louder/pushed harder than my LM3 at 8 ohms and we all know about the TC amp ratings! The TH is a USA built amp that is so far proving to be pretty much bombproof in terms of reliability. -
I think a fair amount of the forum are either A) quite young e.g. late teens, or 'mature' players e.g. late 50s +. I sit in the early 30's, and I don't think there are that many of us at this age on the forum. Welcome, get playing an enjoy!

The LM3 will not push as much wattage as the TH500. The TH500 really will hammer out a lot of power (very honestly rated) and is quite mid orientated, with plenty of lows, but not lots of treble sheen. The LM3 will sound more modern but will hit its limiter quite a lot earlier. It is more of a 'flat' tone with a nice warmth around the edges. As the LM3 is now made in Indonesia but no cheaper, I would opt for a GK or the last of the GB Shuttle 9.2's if you want clean and modern. If you want warm vintage grunt and heft, the TH500. The Carvin amps are also quite nice! -
I miss the tone and sheer power, plus mine was ultra reliable once TE sent me some new fuses. Mine was a GP12400SMX, in the heavy wooden case covered in green carpet. I gigged the hell out of it. I sold it a few years back (well, probably more than a few) to go lightweight as I wanted a full tube amp (Orange) and used the TE funds to go towards a modern lightweight amp. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the weight. I mean, I can understand some weight, but that was so difficult to carry it was unreal. I scuffed my hands a few times and when I almost fell over with it when getting out the car after a late gig, I knew enough was enough. I also wasn't happy that it turned up on an angle in its headcase. I think the retailer purchased the last UK built amps (may have been ex demo?) and sold them cheap. My dad's friend put it straight in the case as he is a carpenter...seems the weight of the amps was too much for the small wooden 'ears' inside to hold onto it straight! Fond memories though. I didn't swap and sell amps back then a lot...and it was nice to be happy with it!

Have you seen the Majesty guitar?!??!
-
Great! Yes, I imagine DT using EBMM guitars and basses will mean the Bongo is getting much more coverage. That pre and those pups really are superb.
-
The Fusion will not have the 'classic' tube warmth to the kind of levels that the Streamliner does. There seems to be a lot of reviewers saying the pre adds more harmonic content but doesn't sound necessarily massively tube like. The Streamliner really DOES sound tube like IMO. If I were to go GK, I'd just get the MB800 and save the money!
That's fair enough. It's a bit of a worry that some people avoid using the phone so much. We're becoming such an impersonal society.
I agree, it's a shame. Modern technology is a blessing but there is that negative side to it. OT, but the most recent 3-4 bands I've looked at either meeting or trying out for either don't exist to a level they say they do, or they want to add you on Facebook and never speak again. Best idea is to meet and have a chat or even just a quick call. -
Same here. With an email I can consider what I want to ask and ask all the questions in an orderly fashion. A phone call can be subject to distractions, poor sound quality and interuptions. My first enquiry is almost always via e mail. The ones who don't bother to respond, might get a second chance, just in case the email got lost in cyber space. I've e mailed Bass Direct a few times of late about a couple of different basses, I've had a reply every time, even out of shop hours. Now I've not actually made the purchase yet but that doesn't make me a time waster. They will get my business when I have the funds for that new instrument.
Plus one. Exactly how I feel. Plus I always call to confirm and order later , unless it's totally online! -
Isn't that illegal? I would have a word with someone about that.
Haha, everyone says the same thing. Unfortunately it's an expectation if it's busy. Anyway, I won't go into the details, I'm just saying that for some people, a quick email is actually much faster and much more efficient compared to phoning, waiting to speak to the right person, possibly having to call back. Not only that, some, not all, get a salesperson doing the hard sale, and that is another thing you can limit via email I also personally like an email for quotes etc / record of agreements. -
There can't be many jobs that don't have either a tea break or lunch break. Phone? Few seconds. Get answer. Job done. Simple!
Not if you are in a big open plan office and barely get a break. -
Looks like it will be a super rare bass! Classic Sabre PDN!

If you want plenty of mid agression, I'd try the Shuttle 9.2 / Max 9.2!

Agreed, there are some uninformed guitarists but that goes for bassists, drummers, the lot. I don't understand why everyone gives the guitarist a hard time. I personally much prefer playing bass but I do enjoy dabbling with guitars. My current setup is USA Telecaster/Orange Dual Terror/Orange PPC212 (Closed back)....its delightful! -
I actually tend to cut the bass a little bit, even when tuning down to A. Especially on my old Markbass 4x10 that claimed a frequency range from 35Hz! The 'bigness' of the sound is all in the mids anyway, and too much bass tends to make things a bit muddy.
+1 - Lot's of 'lows' and low bass really doesn't work for me. Low mids/ top of upper bass are where the punch is...IMO/IME.
We had a Pino in the shop recently priced at £3,050 and it sold in under 2 weeks. It was a great bass, much nicer than the '64 P original I used to have.
I imagine it did...the Pino is a stunner. Sorry to OP...going off topic here. I'm glad you have sorted it!
-
Looks about right to me too. A Pino or Jaco CS is around £3,000 - £3,100 in a store now and the Geddy carries a higher price. I actually thought they'd be closer to £4K or even £4.5K! THe discount vs RRP is far greater on the Geddy than their other CS basses.
Wow...I'm well out of touch!
How do you know that a highly skilled luthier wouldn't just stick it over his knee and give it quick crack?
Who knows what that might actually cause. Quick fix, yes, good idea, well. I'm not even close to being a luthier, but I wouldn't do that even if I was. Paint could flake off near the neck pocket.
I've bought a couple of basses from GV and always found them o.k. I even enquired about a bass they had in their sale that had finished a few days ago and they said that i could have the bass at the sale price. Can't say fairer than that. This was over the phone by the way as i'd never use email if i was seriously enquiring about buying a bass.
Problem is, depending on your job, email is actually better because you might not be able to make a personal call/get into a quiet area etc. Email? Few seconds, discreet, done!
