1. Thank god they arent more than £1500. Itd be interesting to A/B the Metro Sadowsky to one of these. The Metro bass in this spec is £500 more ish. Im definitely interested in that Jazz.
2.
Blimey Gareth that Oly White J5 is a looker and a half. Does the PJ come in any body colours other than black or natural?
Thats what I thought. If the new electrics are upto scratch, I think Ive just saved myself a fair amount of cash going custom. Ill have too hear them first though. Ill have to look at the colours with the PJ....
3. Thanks for all the advice. Im going to have a good look at this thread over the next few weeks. The band seem to be of the opinion that the bass can 'wonder off' at certain points and they invited me to add a few runs etc, but as mentioned, the solid bass lines that are recognisable need to be tight and pretty close to the original. Depends on the song I guess. My finger style has really come on now. One year ago I rarely played fingerstyle, but in this band I can play virtually all the songs finger or pick style....which IMO is important. Some songs just SOUND right fingerstyle, whereas the rockier songs need that pick snarl. We have a new vocalist as well now, and he seems to gel well and have a good rock voice. First gigs for the new lineup are being booked for late May early June. On the note of the old bassist, basically they said he was an old friend, but he was struggling to get to practice as he now lives a fair while from the practice rooms. Not only that, I think he needed more time with family etc. So, it seems it was all amicable. Cheers
4. Mingusbass on Talkbass has just took delivery on one. Apparently Fender are releasing all the info in 2 weeks...launch on site etc. Well, I know I was after a super Fender 5 string bass, and my budget was a lot higher than these are probably going to be, but basically Fender have nailed most of my features in these new basses. Check this....THIS is the one: http://www.musicpower.com/mmMUSICPOWER/Ima...194690705-f.jpg 5 String, blocks, passive switch, new pups and circuit, lovely colour, rosewood board, 70s logo. If these play as well as they look, I can forget getting a custom...this is it. The Talkbass thread on the first post has more updates and this pic from Mingusbass: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y105/Ming.../0311001747.jpg Im glad someone at Fender finally listened to the customer. Good 08-10 USA Series, and now these!
5. I have just spent my last amount of money for 'gear or music related items' on a posh T Rex Chameleon Power Supply and TC Nova Repeater (mainly for guitar as I sold my Line 6 DL4 and delay is the only guitar pedal I really like)....oh and a ticket to Groezrock. Thats it now...until this band get earning in early summer I can have no GAS Probably a good thing.
6.
You are probably right but there is also the delicate question of me having over-spent on basses in the past four months (three vintage Fenders, ouch)
Try to keep the Jazz! You cant split the family now I am the same though...over spent.
7. Sorted AND was UNDER BUDGET for once 5/5 Stars in all the reviews incl user reviews and the 'What Hifi' Reviews. Retailed for £159.99, play.com keep having them cropping up brand new in the sales for £49.99! Goldring NS1000 http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronic...es/Product.html
8.
Am already eyeing up a vent panel with that though in mind... Have just got back from an audition/rehearsal for a band which looks to be my new proper band!! Woohoo. Love the stuff and have known them for a while due to playing gigs with them a while back. I took the Roscoe fretless, as it was the only bass I had at hand, it's totally not the bass you would usually pick for a metal band, and it had light guage strings... But somehow it worked seriously well, and the string rattle from the retuned light strings just added to the sound. They have asked me to join providing I use the fretless 6 Loving this new bass!!
This is what Im thinking...my views of 'this bass is right for that' have recently been vanquished completely. I am having a good old nose at the Roscoe site, and I MAY...but not certain, combine my need for a 5 string with my want for a fretless. If the Roscoe is that nice to play....it might suit me down to the ground.
9. Nice colour. I might look at one of these. Are they officially being released?
10. At first I thought the hinge on the case was the height of the strings off the board!
11. Ouch....was it described like that in sale?!
12. I await the reviews. I hope the pre-amp is improved. I might be in the minority on the Humbucker...they are best left to Rays IMO.
13.
HEHEHE I'm afraid it won't be coming up for sale. Its a 40th birthday present from my wife and to replace the one I stupidly sold when times were hard that I bought with my first record company advance. So, my dream bass will be back in my hards again soon. I kind of call it fate I will have a mint condition 3EQ in natural with maple neck for sale though )
Good call Michael...keep a hold of this one
14.
I believe most of there basses are made to shop order, so prob a few months. I assume when a retailer sells one he would order another to fill it's slot on the wall so to speak. They come with a Roscoe gig bag which is a massively padded case with 'ROSCOE Guitars' Embroidered on it. When I say Passed I mean padded... Both sides as thick as the bass itself made of sponge, covered on the inside with a soft felt...
Ohhh, I do like a good case! Thanks for the pics.
15. Im glad they ditched the Humbucker in the Precision. Anyone else thinking the same as the Talkbass chaps? Eg Fender - 'Sadowsky, please dont copy us'. Sadowsky - 'Tough, we are allowed and do a very good job'. Fender - 'How you like that? We copied you back!'
16.
That one is in stock. I saw it yesterday I'm sure. pretty confident thats a pic of the actual bass mate. Mark generally ships next day well! Action on my Roscoe is too good to be true... perfect in fact! EBS Combo will be with me tomorrow. Mark agreed to send it with me as I was travelling on a packed train with a bass and a bag already :-)
Ah! I wonder how long it takes to get a non stock item over...hmm. Do Roscoe provide a nice case with their basses?
17. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=637125 I cannot find the link to the Fender site as yet...I think its just been announced.
18. Hi I have finally found a worthwhile covers band to join. Strangely enough it took a move up North to actually find something worthwhile. Even bands I was approached by in London just ended up being pretty much a waste of time, (originals and covers). I have also found a set of musicians to play my only personal style of music and thats going pretty damn well. The covers band is working out brilliantly. Right near a Metro stop, I can use my Sansamp if I cant get an amp head there, they are playing pretty good music, and most importantly, they do not mess about with free gigs. They only book good bars, function rooms, and weddings. Finally I can start to have a different source of income for my constant GAS. I have been involved in the covers scene before years back. I was 15-16 at the time and lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time. They needed a bassist, and they were an experienced and older set of lads gigging for a good wage. So its been a good 10 years or more since Ive been involved in covers. So far the practices with the new band has gone down really well, but does anyone have any tips? I think they are shocked at how far gear has come on in the bass world, (eg a 210 or 212 will be enough for a band like this, or even a quality preamp/DI box will do the job in small venues). Their ex bassist used an Ampeg 8x10! Thanks
19. I was thinking of looking at Roscoe for my 5 string investment. Although they are not custom as such, they seem to be held it very high regard. I live nowhere near Bass Direct now so testing within the next 6 months is out of the question, but I would really like to consider the Roscoe line. This one is nice: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...S5_Tobacco.html Anyone have any idea how long these take to be built and shipped? I have 11 months basically.
20.
You can see from my signature that I'm a big Markbass fan, having two heads and a combo. I actually find my F500 a little too clean and prefer the warmth added by the tube compressor in my TA501, which is my favourite MB head. I also recently purchased a RH450 head. I got the RH450 as I wanted to get a little more 'grind' to my sound which I used to get when I was running a P Bass trhough an SVT in the 70's/80's. The RH450 gives me that and works especially well with passive basses. I'm getting to grips with tuning in my active basses as well, but I will still keep hold of my Markbass gear as it is really nice and I'm in the fortunate position of not needing to sell it. The trump card for me is that I can swtich between clean and grind, the compressor really is excellent and having a built in switcheable tune is also great.
I have to agree, and luckily for me I am fortunate enough to be able to have three amps....the Markbass amp is staying without a doubt.
21. IMO, and bass that has been hung up over half a year is ex demo. Despite the fact they could still be in 100% condition, things still wont be brand new like the strings etc....so I expect a discount. Usually they have also ditched some of the paperwork or lost various little bits n bobs that come with it. Thats in the major stores anyway. Amps and cabs are the same. Recently I have seen some TC Elec gear in local stores and they have SERIOUS scratches and marks on them....literally scraped off the coating. You cannot sell items like that....id expect a huge discount or a new one ordering in. Most shops are happy to order in new, but the ones that wont I ignore (PMT Leeds for one).
22. Oh heck! What a collection you have.
23.
Just receieved this email from TC in reply to my question as outlined above; Dear Al, Thank you for getting in touch with us. The two amps are based on the same hardware, but have completely different voicings. The Staccato's sound is specifically tailored for Rocco Prestia. 'Behind the scenes' we have a huge array of tweakable parameters that can basically make the amp sound exactly the way we (or in this case Rocco) want it. The difference between the two amps is quite obvious if you hear them next to each other. Lots of great comments etc. here: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=629357 Regards, Rune Jensen Product Specialist tc electronic TC-HELICON dynaudio acoustics Blue Microphones Great to get such a swift reply, but I still don't feel it's a completely satisfying answer. They certainly don't address the question of what the price difference reflects directly. The implication is that there isn't any extra or better hardware - just some reprogramming. Maybe I've got the wrong end of the stick...?
I definitely recommend reading the massive amount of information on Talkbass. There are some top players who really know their gear giving reviews on the amps, (and yes, they have had to pay for them!). Like I said, MASSIVE low end, slightly more trebly, mid sucked (FLAT) = Staccato 51 RH450 is not as extreme as that when set flat. You are basically paying for the fact its Rocco's sig amp, and its red! They obviously had to spend money getting that sound right and reconfiguring it....but for me, the RH450 is just right.
24. Markbass are not sterile...it may be the bass thats sterile as basically it replicates that perfectly but with a tubey warmth (although perfectly clear and no grit). MB with a Stingray is perfect, (seriously....try it!). I like both TC and the LM3...but the TC amp just has that massive amount of options and presets that are actually very useful. The TC wins it for me but im keeping the LM3. The RH450 goes all the way from old motown thud, to brighter jazz zing, all the way to full on grindy modern punk tones. If you want my opinion, Markbass and TC have basically the best micro/small amp range going, (apart from Mesa Walkabout).
25. WOW!
